Maureen "Little Mo" Slater (also Mitchell and Morgan) was played by Kacey Ainsworth from 18 September 2000 to 26 May 2006. She originally appeared with a turbulent marriage with her abusive husband Trevor Morgan, but she fought back at him, leading to her arrest in 2002; she is later released and Trevor's campaign against her ends with his death on 1 November 2002. Following Trevor's death, Little Mo proceeds to marry his sworn enemy Billy Mitchell who had grown to care and bond with Little Mo during her ordeal. However, their marriage ends after she gets raped by her friend Graham Foster and discovers she is pregnant by him; the storyline that signals the end of Little Mo's marriage with Billy contributes to Ainsworth's maternity leave in 2004. The character soon reappeared with her baby son, Freddie, and later embarks on an affair with her brother-in-law Alfie Moon which is later discovered by her sister and Alfie's wife Kat Slater. Later on, Little Mo develops a relationship with doctor Oliver Cousins though they soon break-up when she is accused of hurting Freddie. However, while her family and friends suspect Little Mo to have hurt her son, the real culprit is revealed to be ten years old Ben Mitchell. After breaking up with Oliver and finding herself subjugated to accusations from her local community, Little Mo leaves Walford in May 2006 with the character being written out of the series in the process.

Linda Carter, played by Kellie Bright, first appeared on 19 December 2013. Bright previously auditioned for the role of Tanya Branning in 2006, but the part was given to Jo Joyner. Linda became landlady of The Queen Victoria public house and moved there with her family from her mother's pub in Watford. She has been compared to original landlady Angie Watts and Bright has said that she had based her portrayal of Linda on Angie.

In May 2016, Bright announced that she was pregnant with her second child and that she would be taking maternity leave. Linda departed the series on 25 December 2016 although she made two separate guest appearances on 16 March and 30 June 2017. She returned full-time on 7 August 2017.

Linda's storylines include her feud with Shirley Carter, coming to terms with her youngest son Johnny being gay, being raped by Mick's brother Dean Wicks and coping in the aftermath, giving birth to a premature baby after falling down the stairs, suffering from bulimia nervosa, being in denial of the possibility that her baby son Ollie could have brain damage, leaving to care for her mother Elaine Peacock following her stroke, discovering that Mick kissed their daughter-in-law Whitney and revealing that she has secretly battled cervical cancer before being involved in an ambulance crash when Johnny is shot, perverting the course of justice when Stuart Highway is shot leading to her being falsely accused of attempted murder, coping with Ollie's diagnosis of autism, battling with alcoholism which leads to shooting Keanu Taylor to pretend that he has been murdered by Martin Fowler, splitting with Mick for a short time, being injured in a boat crash and moving out of the pub.

24. Chrissie Watts

Slick 21, AaronTM 19, Feel The Fever 13, Lukuzz 21, Scene 5, HausofGhibli 3 = 82 points

Chrissie Watts, played by Tracy Ann Oberman, first appeared on 29 April 2004 as the second wife of Den Watts, becoming a prominent regular for the next 18 months. In 2005, Chrissie was the focus of one of the programme's biggest and most high-profile narratives when she murdered her husband in a fit of rage during the special 20th anniversary episode. The broadcast, airing on 18 February, was watched by 14.34 million people, with almost 60% of possible viewers tuning in to see Chrissie take revenge. The character was credited by former head of BBC Drama Serials, Mal Young, as "anchoring the success of the anniversary storyline", with the on-screen drama playing out over the course of the year, propelling her into the role of the show’s primary antagonist, and culminating in Chrissie's departure on 9 December 2005.

Chrissie Watts was created by the production team to be more the equal of her notorious and villainous husband than his long-suffering first wife, Angie. The character was described by Oberman as being like Angie "but with 15 more years of feminism behind her", and was hailed by the TV editor of the Evening Standard as "the only strong woman left in Walford". She became well known for her deviousness and scheming, echoing the traits of her husband, with the official EastEnders website characterising her as "happy to play mind games" and "often two steps ahead" of Den. As part of the Watts family, her storylines centre on her tumultuous marriage to Den, her relationship with his children, and the ongoing feud with the rival Mitchell family. She was involved in numerous clashes with other female characters, Oberman noting that Chrissie "had more fights on EastEnders than most women have in their whole lives", and was constantly scheming against those who got in her way, earning her the sobriquet of "super-bitch".

23. Ian Beale

King Rollo 29, Pippa 2, Hide&Seek 15, JosephStyles 16, HausofGhibli 24 = 86 points

gQqzhp2m.jpg

Ian Beale, played by Adam Woodyatt, is the only remaining original character to have appeared continuously since the first episode on 19 February 1985. The character appeared in his 2000th episode in the show on 26 March 2007, and his 3000th on 27 May 2016.

Ian is the son of Pete and Kathy Beale, nephew of Pauline Fowler and cousin of Mark, Michelle and Martin Fowler. He has fathered three children (Peter, Lucy and Bobby), and acted as a father figure to Peter and Lucy's half-brother and half-sister, Steven Beale and Cindy Williams, respectively. Ian is also the most-married character in EastEnders history, with five marriages to four women (Cindy Williams, Mel Healy, Laura Dunn, and twice to Jane Collins) and two aborted engagements (to Mandy Salter and Denise Fox). As of 2020, Ian is also the current owner of 45 Albert Square, traditionally represented within the series as the family home of the Beale and Fowler family. In 2020, Ian bought The Queen Victoria public house for Sharon Watts.

Ian has been described as a character viewers love to hate. His initial storylines portrayed him as a sensitive young boy with professional aspirations that went against his father's wishes. Not content to follow in his father's footsteps and take over the family fruit and veg stall, Ian wanted to become a chef and this caused a certain amount of hostility between him and his father, who viewed the occupation as effeminate. Ian's keenness to succeed in his business ventures continued as the character grew, so much so that he started using underhand methods in order to get what he wanted and became one of the soap's most renowned "slimeballs". The character is regularly referred to as a "weasel" in the British press.

Author Dorothy Hobson has described Ian as a typical Thatcher's child, a term used to reference children who grew up under the Conservative government of the 1980s and who adopted an ideology, such as personal financial gain, self-sufficiency and disregard of the welfare of those who are less well-off. As a result, Hobson suggests that Ian is "young, ambitious, rich and unhappy", which she claims is a perfect reflection of the spirit of the age. She also suggests that Ian's saving grace is that he is a "passionately caring father" and Woodyatt has suggested that Ian is a chameleon, a description he claims former executive producer Louise Berridge used to describe the character. Woodyatt commented in 2010, "Whatever Louise wanted Ian to do, she'd find a way of justifying it. It's true. He can be nice to his family but he can be devious with them as well. He can stitch people up but can be very generous. You can get away with doing anything with Ian. It's probably why I'm still here."

Chrissie Watts was an absolute legend. Glad she is this high

22. Cindy Beale

ZLsk94Km.jpg

Cindy Beale (also Williams), played by Michelle Collins, made her first appearance on 10 May 1988 before leaving in 1990, returning in 1992 and making her final appearance on 10 April 1998.

Cindy always has an eye for the lotharios of Walford and despite trying to settle down repeatedly with the more reliable Ian Beale, she is unable to remain faithful to him. She has a selfish streak, often more concerned about her own needs than her family's. She often lies and schemes, particularly where men are concerned.

Cindy was introduced in 1988 in a minor role as a love-interest for Simon Wicks. She was due to appear in only eleven episodes but the character evolved. Writer Colin Brake has suggested that Cindy was "the most important character for the future" to be introduced in 1988, despite her low-key entrance.

Actress Michelle Collins was asked to audition for the part by the soap's co-creator, Julia Smith, who saw her perform on stage. Collins had previously auditioned for the role of original character Mary Smith, but at the time Julia Smith had decided they did not want that character to be from London, so the role went to Linda Davidson. Three years on, Collins won the role of Cindy. She has commented, "Cindy arrived for 11 episodes, working on a hat stall and as a tease for Wicksy, but evolved into a much juicier character. Julia said it would change my life. I didn't believe her - how wrong I was."

Roxanne Lizette "Roxy" Mitchell (also Slater and Moon), portrayed by Rita Simons, arrived in Walford with her sister Ronnie on 24 July 2007 from Ibiza where they ran a bar together. During Roxy's time on the show she has been married twice — to Sean Slater and Alfie Moon — and engaged an additional three times — to Damian, Aleks Shirovs and Dean Wicks.
