Watford have sacked manager Nigel Pearson with two games of the Premier League season remaining and the side three points above the relegation zone.

Nigel Pearson says he has been "overwhelmed" by messages of support since being sacked as Watford manager.

Pearson was appointed in December but dismissed on Sunday with Watford in 17th position in the Premier League, three points above the relegation zone.

Under-23s coach Hayden Mullins has been placed in temporary charge for the final two league games of the season.

"Although not able to finish the task I was brought in to achieve, I wish Watford all the best," Pearson tweeted.

"I've been overwhelmed by the well wishes I've received from Watford supporters and the football community. Thank you all for your kind messages."

Watford were bottom of the Premier League with just one win in 15 matches when Pearson was appointed on a deal until the end of the season.

The club is now searching for its 13th permanent manager since Sean Dyche took charge nine years ago.

I shouldn't be surprised as it's Watford but I don't get the point of doing that at all.

They're giving someone with zero managerial experience at the top level 2 games to "potentially" save their PL status? I can't see how sacking Pearson is somehow going to galvanise the players. Besides I'd be fairly confident they'll still stay up even if they lose their final 2 games...

It sounds like he had completely lost the dressing room and the board and Pearson disagreed over the vision of next season.

I don't think they would have got anything from the last 2 games. At least with a new manager bounce there is a chance they might gain a point.

Having said that, yet another for Man City with Laporte scoring. Could be a long 20 minutes for Watford.
Watford will just play for a draw next weekend. I still think a win for Bournemouth and they stay up (potentially), absolutely massive ask but at least it's going down to the final game.

Not if Villa win or draw here due to goal difference

Given how the season has gone, Bournemouth will win at Everton but will be relegated courtesy of a dodgy VAR decision in the 97th minute involving Villa or Watford.

Aston Villa are out of the bottom 3 in the as it stands table while they are winning 1-0 against Arsenal. It would serve Watford right if they did get relegated as they have done Nigel Pearson dirty and it's not the first time they've mistreated a manager. If it wasn't for Nigel Pearson they would already be relegated, he's the main reason why they had a fighting chance.

Watford's longest lasting manager in the last nine years was in charge for 66 matches.
