New Order set to split?

Virgin Net

Electronic pioneers New Order could be on the brink of splitting up following a muted response to their most recent album.

The band are unsure about working on new material after last year's 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call' didn't sell as well as their record company hoped and bass player Peter Hook has insisted their gig at the Buenos Aires Club Ciudad on November 18 "might be our last concert ever".

Drummer Stephen Morris told Argentinean newspaper Pagina/12: "I could say there won't be New Order for a couple of years, but as I said before we're bad at planning things so let's see what happens.

"What happened is that we got seven songs left from 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call' and we didn't want to make an album that was the rest of another one.

"Besides 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call' wasn't a successful enough record for our label to say 'Yes! Yes! Yes' but more like, 'Uhmmm, maybe'."

Morris also feels that after New Order were given the 'Godlike Genius' award at the 2005 NME Awards, a number of new bands have come along with a similar sound and have made them feel less relevant.

"This is strange time to be New Order," he added.

"It was good a couple of years ago when everyone was saying we were 'Godlike Geniuses' and the fans recognised the band.

"There are a lot of New Orders around and we're the old guys of the neighbourhood, so we should stop for a while and let them take our place."

Would you be upset if New Order called it a day?

Not the first time this has happened really.... They 'split up' before and did solo careers in the early 90s...

But I do think it's probably time for them to call it a day....

What's Anton Corbijn got to do with it?

If they don't feel the need to record a new album or tour any more then fine...but they'll be heralded as Godlike Geniuses all over again next year when 'Control' comes out, so they'd be worth another summer tour and a few festival shows.

Plus I'd be happy for Electronic to do another record - just as long as we don't have to bear any more Monaco.

Absolute nonsense. More like Hot Chip.

hot chip are like new order? wtf?!

i'm more than happy for new order to keep making music. tbh i just bough 'waiting for the...' this last weekend and it's not that great... but still much better than most the drivel out there... So long as they stay active in the industry tho i won't cry any tears if they do break up... EASILY ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER!

not sure if i want another electronic album... will be hard to do with Marr palying/touring with Modest mouse now don't forget. I only much liked their first album anyways I must confess....

Hmm...I can't think of a band they're more influenced by.

care to make a case? Am genuinely curious how anyone thinks hot chip sound like new order...

according to teletext he's telling the band what music he wants for his film and this is p***ing off hooky

The track 'No Fit State' is a massive rip off of 'Temptation', they're well into their drum machines and gadgets, all of them sing in a Barney Sumner style - and each isn't a great singer (like Barney) hence the need for them to layer vocals / take turns etc.

In any case, they are much more in the spirit of New Order than the Killers who sound more like Duran Duran.

i'll agree on the voices all being pretty weak - that's for sure. Let me listen to those songs again tonight and get back to ya ;)

They're one of the world's most iconic bands - but the harsh reality is, their last great album was in 1993.

'Technique' remains my personal favourite.

A shame, but their last few albums have been pretty poor.

i agree... but again.. i'd rather a great band continued to make music, even if it's not as good as their old stuff. They have a much better chance of making another great album than a band you've never heard of...

I disagree, if a band have had their glory days behind them, then it's time to give up or they'll just embarrass themselves with mediocre material... I can think of loads of bands that are just treading water tbh and just continuing for the sake of it; how many chances are you supposed to give them before just giving up on them....? New Order should deffo just quit now, it's pretty obvious that they're not doing the business anymore and haven't for some considrable time... Not everyone can be Morrissey, Echo and the Bunnymen or Nick Cave, constantly coming up with the goods....

it's not like their recent stuff is dire or/and embarrasing!!!

It's rather mediocre though, pretty forgettable.. Unworthy of the geniuses who gave us "Blue Monday", "Love Will Tear Us Apart" or "Bizarre Love Triangle".... Even DM's two most recent albums have been better than NO's post-"Republic" stuff, imo....

Agreed, 'tis a sad thing when truly great acts just lose it but insist on just carrying on regardless.... I'd rather a band have the good sense to quit on a total high than just go through the motions in ever-decreasing circles...
