08. Just Friends (7.15)

High: 8.5 (Scene, Chapman)

Low: 5 (Bjork)

The next song to appear is the fourth track on the album, 'Just Friends'. Now we are getting into the top quality tracks. In this reggae-backed number, Amy debates whether or not she can remain platonic with a male friend who is already taken. The song comes at the perfect time on the album, offering a lighter mood before things get dark and heavier. I never used to appreciate this track when I first bought the album but its appeal shines through once given a chance (or several).

07. Wake Up Alone (7.81)

High: 11 (Scene)

Low: 6 (...ready for it, Bjork, Klumzee)

Out next is my personal favourite from the album - the melancholic 'Wake Up Alone'. The song details Amy's yearning for her love interest (presumably Blake) and her struggles to cope without his company. The song provides a clear insight into the life and mind of someone depressed and at risk of drinking their problems away.

It is the first track to appear that manages to bag an 11 - only four songs on the album received 11's! I feel like this song is very underrated and could have been a great single choice later in the album campaign. Also, am I the only one who listens to the intro of Rihanna's 'Love On The Brain' and can clearly hear the intro to this?

06. Me & Mr Jones (8.46)

High: 10 (Scene, Nina West, Chapman)

Low: 6 (...ready for it)

In sixth place is the highest-ranking non-single from the album, 'Me & Mr Jones'. The title is a play on the 1972 Billy Paul song 'Me & Mrs. Jones'. The Mr. Jones in Amy's song however is actually rapper Nas, who Amy was said to be heavily inspired by. The song is definitely one of the album's more upbeat numbers and offers a variation in both tempo and tone. I personally view it as the anthem of the album: the song that demands to be heard live with a jazz band. It is the first song to appear with an average over the 8 mark - putting it comfortably ahead of 'Wake Up Alone' by 0.65.

05. Rehab (9.04)

High: 10 (Nina West, ...ready for it, Addy)

Low: 7.5 (Josh!, Nick F1)

Kicking off the top 5 is the first single to fall out - 'Rehab'. It is ironically Amy's highest-charting single ever in the UK (excluding her 'Valerie' feature) and was her first proper mainstream hit. The song was formed when Amy was discussing with producer Mark Ronson how she resisted going to rehab for her alcohol addiction and Mark encouraged her to turn it into a song inspired by 1960's girl groups. The song was released in October 2006 and entered the chart at #19 before climbing to its peak of #7 where it stayed for a fortnight. The song also gave Amy her first US hit when it peaked at #9 in June 2007. At the following year's Grammy Award, 'Rehab' was awarded Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Female Pop Vocal Performance. I agree with its position in this rate - it is among the album's strongest moments but is perhaps a bit gimmicky compared to the other highlights. Also I think overplay has dulled its shine slightly.

04. Love Is A Losing Game (9.08)

High: 10 (Nina West, Josh!, WinterFreeze, Addy, Bjork)

Low: 7 (Klumzee)

At #4 is the fifth and final single from the album. 'Love Is A Losing Game' sees Amy using the risks and lack of control associated with gambling as a metaphor for falling in love. It's a very solemn track which allows the heartfelt lyrics to take centre stage. The song originally missed the top 40 when it was released in December 2007, peaking at #46, but after Amy's death in July 2011, the song finally entered the top 40 at #33. The song has been stanned by the likes of George Michael and Prince.

03. Tears Dry On Their Own (9.65)

High: 11 (Josh!, ...ready for it, Chapman)

Low: 7.5 (Nick F1)

Finishing in third place is the Motown-inspired fourth single from the album. 'Tears Dry On Their Own' samples the Motown classic 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' and sees Amy discuss the effects a souring relationship has on her. Musically, it is one of the more upbeat songs on the album despite its lyrical themes and, as track 7, acts as the perfect breather between ballads 'Love Is A Losing Game' and 'Wake Up Alone'. The song peaked at #16 in August 2007 and re-entered the chart at #27 after Amy passed away.

02. You Know I'm No Good (9.73)

High: 11 (Addy, Bjork)

Low: 8.5 (Nick F1, Chapman)

Winning the silver medal is the second single and second track from the album. In the song, Amy covers her usual topics of drug use by comparing her drug use to cheating in a relationship. The track is quite telling of Amy’s dark and dangerous lifestyle of heavy drinking and addiction which ultimately killed her. Amy paints a telling picture of her relationship with Blake. She tells how even though she exhibits warning signs of her bad behavior & dangerous lifestyle, including heavy drug use, and cheating — her man still accepts her back after seeing the signs (carpet burns). Her cheating was as easily revealed as the smell of alcohol on her breath. The song entered the chart at #40 in January 2007 and went on to give Amy her second top 20 hit (peaking at #18). The song re-entered the top 40 after Amy's death at #37.

01. Back To Black (10.31)

High: 11 (Nina West, Jester, Crazy Chris, Chemistry, Nick F1, WinterFreeze, Klumzee)

Low: 8 (Chapman)

And rated the best track on Back To Black is the title track itself with an incredible average of 10.31! 'Back to Black' details what Amy goes through and her habits during the dark moments that follow the breakdown of her relationship. The "black" is likely to refer to drinking and depression although it may also refer to heroin, which Amy was openly addicted to. The song originally peaked at #25 when it was released as the album's third single in April 2007 but after Amy's death the song became the go-to track to commemorate her legacy and it re-entered the chart at #8 after her passing - becoming her third-highest peaking song after 'Valerie' and 'Rehab'.

omg that top 2

Amazing winner and I don't begrudge it even though my fave is 'YKING' but I totally see why Back 2 Black is the winner :winner:

Thanks Scene for doing this!!!
