Posted November 28, 200618 yr http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/8715/385x200westlife1on4.jpg Aging Boy Bands are Back in the UK: Westlife, Take That Top Charts Yes, it happened: Irish-based boy band Westlife outsold The Beatles, U2, and (erm) Oasis to debut at No. 1 on this week's UK Albums chart. For the past week, it was the news the media had been dreading. Entertainment reporters are now covering this story like it's some kind of national tragedy. And when I say "entertainment reporters," I mean Victoria Newton, of course, who has declared this past Sunday "The Day The Music Died." She bitches and whines in today's Sun about it: Westlife's The Love Album — a sickening concoction of covers which include "classics" from BONNIE TYLER — flew off the shelves to make it the band’s 6th No. 1 album. Not since JOHN LENNON was beaten to the 1980 Christmas No. 1 by St. Winifred’s School Choir with the awful "There's No One Quite Like Grandma" has there been such a chart travesty. http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/1180/154x108takethat1gg6.jpg She pins her hopes on the Take That comeback album, which comes out this week, to knock Westlife out of the top spot next Sunday. Meanwhile, Take That's new single, "Patience," has zoomed to No. 1 on the UK Singles chart, signalling a triumphant return for UK boy bands. Imagine Backstreet Boys and All-4-One claiming the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot 200, and you'll get some sense of how mad this all is. Noel Gallagher remarked during a concert on Sunday, "Did someone say Westlife? That goes to prove there is no God!" I think more damning proof that there's no Higher Power is that Gallagher has been allowed to continuously run his mouth. First, the man had the audacity to tell The Clash to " off," which is either really rock 'n roll or really damn stupid. (I'm going with the latter.) And if you missed the news last week, the comments he made about Robbie Williams are truly cruel. When asked by The Sun (who else?) who'd he kill first if he had only one bullet left in his life, Phil Collins or Robbie Williams, he says about Robbie, "I'd put the bullet in the gun as he's eventually going to do it himself as he is a grossly unhappy person." I'm sure that comes from such a compassionate place. Way to lift the man's spirits, Noel. Robbie takes a beating in Alan McGee's blog entry over at The Guardian entitled "Why I Hate Robbie Williams." "To me, Robbie Williams is a crime against music," McGee says, "It's people like him who are destroying British pop culture. He has 1% of Mick Jagger's talent. He's the post-9/11 feelgood factor. He doesn't mean anything - he's utterly vacant. If Robbie Williams is what sells then give me any unsigned band in a garage any day of the week. At least they'll love music. Robbie Williams is music for people who don't feel - or the payment on the mortgage, if you work for EMI." Even if you're inclined to agree with McGee--I don't--the rant comes off as particularly petulant and rockist. Something Robbie can be happy about: he's the "top calendar stud" for 2007. November 28, 200618 yr Westlife are hardly 'aging' are they?! what are they about 25? 26? Well with the songs they sing and the way in which they sing them, they certainly act like old crooners not young lads
