September 28, 20204 yr Author 3rd place - Elton John - Candle in the Wind 1997 7.2 1o9rLDCfO6o I guess there's people who can't listen to this - either because of the events that preceded it and why it even exists, or because the content is crushingly sentimental, and not in a good way. It really has rocketed up in my estimation and I had to refrain from putting it in second place because I feel it hasn't earned it yet. Edited September 28, 20204 yr by Colm
September 28, 20204 yr Author 2nd place - Various Artists - Perfect Day 7.7 dfddYDRIFGY This has always been a favourite of mine. Definitely my favourite charity record ever. I love that it started out as promotional tool for the BBC and not a charity record - the temptation for an ensemble final chorus could have been too much to resist if it was initially created as a charity record. Instead, everyone gets their own part. The highlights for me have always been David Bowie, Gabrielle and Emmylou Harris. Seven weeks at number 1 in Ireland
September 28, 20204 yr Author 1st place - Natalie Imbruglia - Torn 7.9 VV1XWJN3nJo I was obsessed with this song in '97. And in '98. My overplaying has taking the shine off this but it's still ahead of the rest of the Top 10 in a surprisingly strong year. It was in the Top 50 end of year chart for three years running (1997 - 16th, 1998 - 3rd, 1999 - 50th) and I believe was a feature of the Top 200 airplay end of year charts for many years afterwards.
September 28, 20204 yr Torn is really the perfect pop song, and should definitely have been a #1 but alas, too much competition in late 97 for me the ranking would be: #1 Don't speak #2 Torn #3 Candle in the wind #4 Perfect day #5 Tubthumping Candle in the wind, I've had ups and downs with the song, periods in which I really liked it, like when it was released as a live version in 88, and other periods when I liked it less, like in 97. As a non-Uk person, I don't have I don't necessarily connect the song to Lady Di's death and actually prefer it on the Marilyn framework.
September 28, 20204 yr Author 43rd best seller of 1997 http://scans.chartarchive.org/UK/1997/UK%2...nd%20albums.pdf page 2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_in_Briti...selling_singles Edited September 28, 20204 yr by Colm
September 28, 20204 yr Author Torn is really the perfect pop song, and should definitely have been a #1 but alas, too much competition in late 97 It opened with 130,000 sales which would have sent it to number 1 in 25 other weeks in 1997. Barbie Girl was unstoppable 239,000.
September 28, 20204 yr Loved “Torn”, original by Ednaswap of course. Quite liked “Big Mistake” (big radio hit but hardly heard now) and “Smoke” - all of this is taking me back! I think she went a bit too MOR after this, like with “Wrong Impression” etc.
September 28, 20204 yr Smoke is her best actually, gorgeous song. White Lillies Island was the typical sophomore album flop but was a bit undeserved cos it had great songs
September 28, 20204 yr Author Big Mistake was hugely derivative for me. She sounded almost exactly like Alannis. Edited September 28, 20204 yr by Colm
September 28, 20204 yr 1998 is a ballad heavy nightmare. Don't ask me because I don't know why. I guess it's just like that... and that's the way it is.

September 28, 20204 yr Author 10th place - Chef - Chocolate Salty Balls 0.2 sjrdanK4LSY 0.2 points for that instrumental break.
September 28, 20204 yr Author 9th place Boyzone - No Matter What LeAnne Rimes - How Do I Live? Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply Spice Girls - Goodbye 2.8 Technically they're all joint 6th place but there's no way they deserve that accolade. I can't be bothered coming up with anything at all to say about this drippy tosh. dLFMBdX0Zj0
September 28, 20204 yr Author 5th place RUN DMC v Jason Nevins - It's Like That 2.9 TLGWQfK-6DY Shouty nonsense. Awful.
September 28, 20204 yr Author 4th place - Pras Michel, Ol' DB, Mya - Ghetto Superstar (That is What You Are) 3.5 MnWogQTfSIY Given that other rap duets have gone way up in my estimation earlier in this thread, I thought this would improve too. It's actually weaker than I remember. I was going to give it points for the Knight Rider sample but they made terrible use of it. I did actually look for an official video but I couldn't find one - I'm sure everyone is heartbroken.
September 28, 20204 yr Author 3rd place - Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On 4.8 3gK_2XdjOdY The lowest scoring 3rd place in the thread (so far  ) and a song that I just about tolerated listening to today, more than once. She does what she has to and belts it out. Job done. Edited September 28, 20204 yr by Colm
