13TH OCTOBER

Improving saleswise by just 4% Maria Mckee holds the top spot for a third week, for a song to be so long into its No 1 reign and be still improving is rare but more importantly that small % increase was just enough to see off Bobby Vinton’s “Blue Velvet” which climbs 3-2 (72,000) and was just 2,000 away from “Show Me Heaven”. It was never too far from Mckee but couldn’t make it and with the screening of “Blue Velvet” now gone it may struggle to make a further upward move.

Other potential challengers either failed to threaten or disappointed, Londonbeat fall 2-3 (52,000), Status Quo rise 5-4 (47,000) and Pet Shop Boys surprisingly fall 4-5 (47,000), all are too far away to pose any threat.

Further down Twenty-4-Seven hold at No 7 (30,000) and Bass-O-Matic drop 9-10 (19,000).

Onto the new entries and first up are Technotronic who now have their 4th top 10 single in just 12 months even though in reality it is just a Megamix of their previous singles. Regardless of that we can’t seem to get enough of these Belgians as “Megamix” rises 12-6 (45,000) and deposes the Pet Shop Boys on top of the 12” charts.

Peaking last month at No 4 in the US, MC Hammer’s second single here “Have You Seen Her” is a cover of the Chi-Lites 1972 No 3 hit and follows on in terms of Chi-Lites covers from UB40 and Amazulu which have been top 10 singles in the last 4 years. Back to Hammer and his album revives 30-21, it has been top 40 since its release 12 weeks ago, not bad but that pales in comparison to the US where it has been No 1 for 18 weeks (15 consecutively) and counting, meanwhile his new single climbs 19-8 (24,000).

A duet in reality between Dave Hemingway and Briana Corrigan the new Beautiful South single “A Little Time” is creating waves as it jumps 30-9 (21,000). It’s the first single from the band’s second album “Choke” which is out next month, it comes with a rather memorable promo which features the pair having a domestic and trashing a house!

Next week a new Whitney single is released- how high can it debut?

1- SHOW ME HEAVEN- Maria Mckee (74,000)

2- BLUE VELVET- Bobby Vinton (72,000)

3- I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU- Londonbeat (52,000)

4- THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ PART ONE- Status Quo (47,000)

5- SO HARD- Pet Shop Boys (47,000)

6- MEGAMIX- Technotronic (45,000)

7- I CAN’T STAND IT- Twenty 4 Seven (30,000)

8- HAVE YOU SEEN HER- MC Hammer (24,000)

U Can't Touch This was at least interesting but that cover of Have You Seen Her was terrible

at least we got a great new with A Little Time, great song!

Status Quo really standing out in that top 10 for the first time in their career!
I think when Hammer asked for permission from the Chi Lites to cover their song they should have told him no U can't touch this!
MC Hammer had quite a bunch of hits, after this one he had Pray, which was quite big everywhere, think Pray was his biggest hit in the US, not sure about the UK... but he also had a 2nd successful era with that Adams Family song...
Wow ‘Blue Velvet’ came so close :o I think I was introduced to that song through Lana Del Rey’s version and then stumbled across the Bobby Vinton one later on. Love that - the power of the advert! (and film)

“Show Me Heaven” makes it a month at No 1 but it’s now in decline in terms of sales, off 17% to 61,000, it has now sold 313,000, not bad in terms of chart toppers for the year. Status Quo climb 4-2 (55,000) as the album “Rocking All Over The Years” debuts at No 2 giving them a “runners up” double!, Bobby Vinton’s challenge fades 2-3 (53,000) with the advert containing the track also due to stop airing next week this could be a rapid faller!

Londonbeat drop 3-5 (31,000) marginally ahead of Technotronic who hold at No 6 (31,000) but The Beautiful South are the big climbers 9-4 (33,000) ensuring them a TOTP performance this week.

Those New Kids On The Block are back with their 7th top 10 single in 11 months, quite some going. Technically the new single is a double A Side “Let’s Try It Again/ Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind)” the former is a 3rd single from current album “Step By Step” but doesn’t have a promo to promote it and a remarkable lack of airplay to boot. All of which leads one to expect that the effort is going into marketing the boys cover of The Delfonics 1971 No 22 hit “Didn’t I” which has been getting an airing on their recent tour. Their version dates back to 1986 when it appeared on their debut self titled album which is getting re-issued in a fortnight which must be the real purpose of the release. Indeed the boys pulled the same trick in the US last year when this single and the debut album got a new push. Here the single rises 16-8 (25,000) this week.

Twenty-4-Seven hold at No 7 (27,000) Pet Shop Boys tumble 5-9 (23,000) and MC Hammer slips 8-10 (22,000).

1- SHOW ME HEAVEN- Maria McKee (61,000)

2- THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ PART ONE- Status Quo (55,000)

3- BLUE VELVET- Bobby Vinton (53,000)

4- A LITTLE TIME- Beautiful South (33,000)

5- I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU- Londonbeat (31,000)

6- MEGAMIX- Technotronic (31,000)

7- I CAN’T STAND IT- Twenty 4 Seven (27,000)

8- LET’S TRY IT AGAIN/ DIDN’T I BLOW YOUR MIND- New Kids On The Block (25,000)

9- SO HARD- Pet Shop Boys (23,000)

10- HAVE YOU SEEN HER?- MC Hammer (22,000)

ouch that NKOTB track was evil :D not much going on this week...
A Little Time  I loved the Beautiful South as a kid and I remember being so excited the weeks it climbed up to number 9 and then number 4... I remember actually being really nervous for the reveal of the next chart

27TH OCTOBER

1990 is turning into a good year for former Housemartins members, following on from Norman Cook’s success with “Dub Be Good To Me” back in March it’s now time for Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway’s turn at the top as “A Little Time” moves 4-1 for their new outfit The Beautiful South. The song sold 64,000 as it struggled to overtake the falling “Show Me Heaven” (59,000) but it managed to push past as the weekend approached.

Meanwhile at No 3 and debuting are the Righteous Brothers who have something of a revival on their hands and all thanks to the film currently at No 1 in the box office “Ghost”. “Unchained Melody” was originally performed in the film “Unchained” before being issued in three versions in 1955 which were all top 10 simultaneously in June that year for Al Hibbler, Jimmy Young, and Les Baxter. Fast forward a decade and perhaps the definitive version was recorded by the Righteous Brothers in 1965, that version was only intended as a B-Side to “Hung On You” but had greater interest at radio and so was flipped, good job too- it made No 4 in the US and No 14 here. Now their version has been featured in “Ghost” it’s prompted a new re-issue and the song debuts instantly at No 3 (56,000).

With a third studio album released in a fortnight entitled “Pills N Thrills & Bellyaches”, The Happy Mondays see their second cut from the album “Kinky Afro” leap 20-5 (36,000) to equal the peak of “Step on” in April. The group have enjoyed considerable notoriety in the press this year (along with the Stone Roses) so we’ll see if they can deliver when it comes to that album.

Much was expected from the new Whitney Houston single “I’m your Baby Tonight”, it comes from the hand of L.A Reid & Babyface and heralds her third album of the same title which will go head to head with that new Happy Mondays album in a fortnight. Hence it was a surprise when the song only debuted at No 16 last week but does recover as it jumps to No 7 (23,000) to become her 8th top 10 in 5 years, the promo sees the singer pay homage to The Supremes and Marlene Dietrich among others, for Dietrich it’s her second tribute of 1990 after Madonna’s “Vogue” name check.

“Take My Breath Away” was of course the main beneficiary in the charts from the film “Top Gun” four years ago and whilst Cruise has moved on and now has helped McKee to make No 1, Berlin stumbled after that track, having just 2 minor chart hits before slipping out of sight. Now the track and the band have done a “Blue Velvet” in so much as “Top Gun” got its terrestrial premiere last weekend and the song is also being featured in a current ad to help it, in Berlin’s case a Peugeot ad, the song jets 27-8 (22,000). “Blue Velvet” itself descends 3-6 (31,000).

Status Quo give up the battle as they drop 2-4 (40,000) as their album holds at No 2 behind Paul Simon, Technotronic drop 6-9 (22,000) and Londonbeat fall 5-10 (20,000). Next week sees the new Kylie single arrive- can it keep her run of top 10 hits intact?

1- A LITTLE TIME- The Beautiful South (64,000)

2- SHOW ME HEAVEN- Maria McKee (59,000)

3- UNCHAINED MELODY- Righteous Brothers (56,000)

4- THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ PART ONE- Status Quo (40,000)

5- KINKY AFRO- Happy Mondays (36,000)

6- BLUE VELVET- Bobby Vinton (31,000)

7- I’M YOUR BABY TONIGHT- Whitney Houston (23,000)

8- TAKE MY BREATH AWAY- Berlin (22,000)

9- MEGAMIX- Technotronic (22,000)

10- I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT YOU- Londonbeat (20,000)

This thread is amazing. I'm not one for hyperbole but this will be one of the best things on the internet when it's done.
Absolutely agree, it’s a wonderful thread and it’s taking me right back to sitting down each Sunday to listen to the chart. Thank you Gezza
