Nadine dad Niall Aloud to be a star

27 November 2006

The father of Londonderry pop superstar Nadine Coyle will today become a TV star in his own right - with a leading role in the fourth episode of the BBC drama series Seanchai.

Niall Coyle plays a central role in the fourth episode of the six-part series - trying to put a curse on a talent show judge.

Niall gets his own chance to hog the limelight after months of fielding questions about his daughter's career with Girls Aloud and her romance with American actor Jesse Metcalfe.

In tonight's episode, an aspiring songwriter, played by Coyle, seeks revenge on a judge on the panel of a TV talent show.

To exact his revenge, the would-be songwriter employs an ancient pagan device known as a cursing stone - which can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

The programme is produced by locally-based Westway Films with the support of the Irish Language Broadcast Fund In Cloch na Mallacht.

Radio Ulster presenter, Brian Mullen, also appears, playing himself.

Writer and producer Joe Mahon says that any similarities between the judge in question and Simon Cowell of The X Factor are entirely coincidental.

"It's difficult to describe these stories without giving away too much of the plot," he said.

"It's also difficult to place them in a recognisable genre. When we describe them as tales of the supernatural some viewers assume they're intended to be scary, horror stories.

"There are a few twists and shocks in each of them, I hope, but they're really closer to black farce, camped-up melodramas for the most part, tongue-in- cheek stuff, and definitely not for dedicated blood and gore aficionados.

"At the risk of inviting invidious comparisons, I'd say they owe a lot more to Flann O'Brien than Stephen King."

Nadine shot to fame by winning a place in Girls Aloud via TV show Popstars: The Rivals.

She had previously been kicked out of band Six by RTE chiefs after they discovered she lied about her age to get on a TV reality show in the Republic.

Her father has been in the press himself, often being the first port of call for journalists hungry for news about the star's career or love life.

Seanchai airs on BBC2 tonight at 10 o'clock.
