Ariana Grande's biggest singles on the Official Chart revealed

21 October 2020 | By Rob Copsey

In just seven years, Ariana Grande has gone from TV child star to purveyor of top notch pop.

Her arrival into music in 2013 was a near-instant success, but since 2018, Grande's powers have gone stratospheric, her albums Sweetener and Thank U, Next breaking multiple streaming records.

With the release of Ariana's sixth album Positions imminent, we reveal her Top 20 biggest songs in the UK - based on Official Charts Company data - that have helped her rise to the top. First, a look at some highlights.

Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored

Chart peak: 1

Combined sales: 808,000

Its brilliant title aside, Break Up... was also a record breaker. The Max Martin-helmed track knocked her previous single 7 Rings down to Number 2 the week of its release, making Ariana the first female artist in UK chart history to replace herself at the top of the chart.

Santa Tell Me

Chart peak: 13

Combined sales: 681,000

As is often the way with original Christmas songs, Ariana's ludicriously cute festive offering had a modest start on the Official Chart, peaking at Number 79 in 2014, largely noticed only by her fans. It's since earned its place as a worthy addition to any Christmas playlist and has enjoyed an annual resurgence for the past three years, reaching Number 13 in 2018 and 2019.

Thank u, Next

Chart peak: 1

Combined sales: 1.44 million

Taking control of the narrative around her whirlwind romance with ex Pete Davidson, Ariana dropped thank u, next moments before Davidson had planned to reference the relationship in a skit on Saturday Night Live. Expressing gratitude to her name-dropped exes and empowering messages of self-love, the single became a global phenomenon, smashing records including most YouTube views in a video's first 24 hours (55 million).

Break Free

Chart peak: 16

Combined sales: 837,000

After channelling ‘90s R&B and 1960s girl groups on her debut album Yours Truly, Ariana went into full on pop banger mode for her 2014 follow-up My Everything. Break Free showcased the shift best; assisted by EDM whizz Zedd, it’s colourful, life-affirming and was easily one of her boldest releases. What’s more, the quite frankly ridiculous Barbarella-inspired video proved she had personality.

Into You

Chart peak: 14

Combined sales: 1.29 million

The second single from Ariana’s Dangerous Woman album has taken on cult status with Ariana fans as the often forgotten gem in her crown after it ‘only’ reached Number 14 on the Official UK Singles Chart and 13 on America’s Billboard Hot 100. It’s a relentless, throbbing, immaculately put together Max Martin production that doesn’t let up for a full four minutes and four seconds. If time is not of the essence, check out the six essays (!) written about it on Maxopedia – a fan site dedicated to all of Max’s work.

One Last Time

Chart peak: 2

Combined sales: 1.79 million

A modest hit when it was released in 2015 as the fifth single from her My Everything album, One Last Time – a love song set at the end of the world - took on new meaning in the wake of the Manchester terrorist attack, which claimed the lives of 22 people and injured over 500 at her arena concert. One Last Time was adopted by fans after the attack and climbed to Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart. With a total of 419,000 downloads and 108 million streams, it's her biggest hit overall to date.

The reason for One Last Time being #1 is heartbreaking, but it also feels right that it’s Ariana’s best seller.

BUWGIB is such a non #1, there were much better single options on thank you, next.

Why did I think Thank U Next was her biggest hit now?
Bed being at #19 is bizarre, it felt like such a non event.
I'm impressed with how high the overall sales for 'One Last Time' are.
Didn't know she had so many Max Martin songs
