November 29, 20204 yr Really enjoyed the performances of Pretty Please, Break My Heart (finally a proper choreo Rendition!), Electricity and of course Don't Start Now! Fever was great too, but Dua completely outsung Angèle, you could barely hear her ! The Sydney Mardi Grass performance of Physical was better (I expected more given the popularity with the fans) That mimed pre-recorded version of Prisoner was such a let down! They could have at least done a proper pre-recorded performance instead of just laying about miming. Elton, Bad Bunny etc peforming from those tiny grayscale tvs was really unnecessary, would have much rather had proper performances of Love Again or Love Is Religion instead. Overall, it was a great show and a lot of fun. She has grown a lot as a performer. Her voice unreal and she looked like a goddess especially in that final bodysuit outfit. The charisma and personality sometimes felt forced but she is definitely getting there in that department and I'm a proud stan!
November 30, 20204 yr The Telegraph ★★★★★ Shiny pop grooves, seamless choreography and VIP guest appearances made the pop princess's warehouse show an escapist fantasy from the sofa If revellers can’t go to the nightclub, then the nightclub shall come to the revellers. Dua Lipa’s spectacular Studio 2054 livestream offered an exceptionally well-staged simulation of a particularly fabulous night out at the disco. Albeit one in which you are stranded on the edge of the dancefloor, watching everyone else have all the fun. On the plus side, you could bring your own drinks and there was no queue for the toilets. Observing the strict social distancing protocols befitting his age, Sir Elton John beamed in on a giant screen to play a solo version of Rocket Man. But like a neglected pianist in the corner of a noisy cocktail lounge, the elder superstar was rather ignominiously faded out on his first chorus, while the cameras pivoted for the return of the woman of the hour, who had evidently nipped off and squeezed in a quick costume change during the interlude. Dua Lipa has described her pay-per-view online concert as being “as close to a performance as we can get right now.” Whether it was genuinely live or not, well, who knows? One room contained band members offering up drum breaks and guitar solos whenever a camera pointed in their direction, which wasn't often. The star’s husky, powerful vocals were surely partly live, though the energetic choreography looked a bit strenuous for such smooth vocalising. However you dress them up, livestreams are poor substitutes for gigs. But there comes a point when we have to judge the medium on its own merits as televisual performances. Billie Eilish really raised the game with her virtual reality livestream last month but Dua Lipa’s extravaganza was the best I have seen.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/what-to-l...est-livestream/ NME ★★★★☆ There’s no shortage to the star power to help Lipa out with her big night, though one guest feels shoehorned in. After ‘Electricity’, Elton John appears on a screen... With no link to the rest of the set, it ends up feeling random – at best, like a room you’ve temporarily dipped into to find lost friends; at worst, a filler while Lipa takes a breather and changes outfits. That slight blip aside, Studio 2054 goes some way to completing Lipa’s evolution from good to great that started with the release of ‘Future Nostalgia’. Although the routines on show tonight aren’t the most complex, they flesh out her performance enough that now she has the songs, the personality and the presence that all true icons possess. https://www.nme.com/reviews/dua-lipa-studio...on-john-2828374 The Guardian ★★★☆☆ The singer’s online show had a charming Top of the Pops vibe despite its – often star-studded – shortcomings From its title down, Studio 2054 suggests it is rooted in club culture, but it is preceded by an advert for Morrisons, which – with the best will in the world – doesn’t really feel in keeping with the decadent extravagances of the 70s Manhattan disco the show’s name is based on. The Blessed Madonna bops along to the music: either she feels moved to dance by Physical’s taut 80s groove or she is worried that if she stands still for too long, someone will stick a Johnnie Walker whisky logo on her as well. If she isn’t exactly a bottomless fount of charisma, Dua Lipa looks fantastic in a series of spangly outfits, hits her marks and sounds pretty great. As far as can be discerned, the vocals are live, and she never misses a note or sounds breathless: no mean feat given the amount of choreography involved. If it were all happening on an arena stage, and you were watching it amid a vast crowd of screaming fans, it would be fantastic. But it isn’t: the quest for something that goes some way towards replicating a live experience goes on https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/nov/...ct-escapist-pop
