He has since become one of the most respected producers in the sub-genre of melodic house and released a third album 'Brightest Lights' at the start of the year. It was this album track that appeared on my release radar and became a big sleeper hit - a seemingly random choice given it is the least popular of the entire album going by Spotify streams, but for me it is easily an album highlight. It is a rather mellow track, building over half of the track without a kick drum, with a lovely vocal that then is absent for the whole 2nd half of the song - choosing to completely tone it down for the "drop" again. It was this, although it of course went on to become a proper chart hit so I'd have known about it either way. PS1 is a New York DJ who has apparently been around for 15 years as a DJ before suddenly going into production this year, instantly making it big being commissioned to do a load of remixes alongside the release of his debut single which was 'Fake Friends'. He doesn't exactly offer anything new making pretty much the same beats as Joel Corry and many others, but with its high energy and piano house vibes alongside a great catchy vocal hook, the song is an undeniable tune and for me one of the very best we've had in commercial dance throughout the year. She's one of the best trance vocalists for me. Although her previous collab with Richard Durand surprisingly made no chart impact (despite being voted #1 in ASOT for the year) they clearly still had it in them to make a #1 for me, in their follow-up. It reminds me of classic trance tracks with its big melodic synths which I love. Durand is clearly someone who's had many years doing trance though he's passed me by until recently.This track now gets a deserved EOY top 40 placement, and remains comfortably the best single either of them have put out (with Richard not having any proper hits since, so far). Upon the first listen the instant stand-out to me was of course 'Hallucinate' which now becomes her 2nd track to reach a year-end top 40 after 'One Kiss' ended in 2nd two years prior. The track is a great throwback to 00s disco house which really works for Dua and felt like a natural progression for her in the era rather than just her hopping on a producer's hit. It's a very upbeat track and one she really put the effort into with the vocals. It getting a single release was great to see, even though it didn't receive as much of a push as her others which meant it ended up still remaining an underrated gem. Perhaps next time she could go full Gaga on us and do a whole album of dancepop bops but until then this remains a big highlight of her output so far. The song was also helped out by Paul Woolford's remix which turns it into a full-on house track which allowed it to get a deserved top 20 peak. The track has a great dark progressive vibe that I love with rather despairful lyrics that are appropriate for the year that has been 2020. He also left behind a load of unreleased material, most of which I suppose will remain unfinished and unheard. A few songs however did eventually make their way onto YouTube by various means. 'We Burn', also known as 'Faster Than Light' (I've elected to include this as the subtitle) was one of the most anticipated for a release by the fanbase, having leaked in low quality form many years ago. The version above is likely to be the best quality version we'll ever get of it, and sounds very close to being finished if you ask me. Regardless, what an amazing song it is. It has the flourishes that made Avicii's music so special, alongside a great classic drop and one of the best f-bombs I've heard in a song too. If you were a fan of Avicii's hits then I'd very much recommend this track. [19+ weeks] Video: sOmZMQaVZps ahpv5BBI3Xg Commentary Well it wouldn't be a chart of mine without at least one instance of two consecutive Avicii songs. This track has a bit of a story to it as well. Country music singer Cam got together with Avicii to write this song a couple of years back, originally intended as an Avicii song that would guest her vocal. The original version of the track leaked onto YouTube at the start of 2020 which instantly became a #1 in this chart. It then turned out that Cam was to use the song for her own album, named after the track too. Her album version took away the Avicii production instead giving it a bit more of a country-pop vibe, but still keeping the essence of the track (and him having a writing credit). The song shot back up to #1 again being the first to make #1 twice in two separate chart runs within the same calendar year. Obscure chart trivia aside, it really is great in both versions (linked above), she puts a great vocal in. I didn't even enjoy her BJSC entry 'Diane', so this was a huge turnaround and most probably a big one-off. The Avicii version is more in-line with his more recent work, not going for a festival ready drop as on 'We Burn' but giving it his trademark sound. The album mix keeps the upbeat dance vibe which was pleasing to hear as I was worried they'd just turn it into a slow boring country ballad when I read that they'd changed the production. However I did really like the song and it is very comfortably in the top 40. It's also her biggest hit in my chart yet giving her a first year-end top 40 hit after three previous top 100s. 'Trouble' is also the highest track this year to come from Spinnin Records, the once giant of dance music who haven't seen a whole lot of relevance in recent memory. It's quite simply a great upbeat dancepop track, even if a bit generic which perhaps stopped it smashing in BJSC, but did give her another US Dance Club Songs $mash hit. With production handled by Dan Muckala, who has also worked with Selena Gomez & Backstreet Boys, you wouldn't notice it from this big dance bop however. The first of these comes from three complete unknowns who managed to find some label backing and get this to take off. I'm glad it did though, because it ended up being my favourite dance remake of the year. Remaking old hits seems to be very popular these days and not all of them are done very well but this one felt a bit more inspired. 'The Hanging Tree' wasn't a song I expected to ever become a dance hit but thanks to a couple of lyric changes they manage to make it work. The beat is quite reminiscent of CamelPhat which is always a good thing too. It proved fairly controversial on the forum but I always loved it. I'd known of Paul Woolford for a while and wasn't expecting him to ever go for a commercial hit. Diplo is also rather hit and miss, so I'd no idea they'd make such a great track together - with Kareen Lomax putting in a great vocal as well. It was a quick grower, and still is high in my chart now. It's the best kind of piano-led house, with it sounding a lot less 'cheap' than many other commercial dance producers. I and others were amazed it even turned out to be such a real chart hit. From hearing other remixes and tracks Paul's put out, it really sounds like he is the best at piano house at the moment. Fake Friends turned out to be a decent dance track of 2020 didn’t it, it wasn’t one that was instant for me, but in time I came to enjoy it more. Pity that Hallucinate never achieved the official chart peak it deserved. At least it was nice to see included on the tracklist for Now 107. On that note, is there still such a thing as Now That’s What Dan Calls Music? I had a vague recollection of some back cover designs I think you did some years ago which were always aesthetically pleasing to see at the time! ^_^ Still thinking what’s to come from this EOY now that only 20 songs remain, and we still haven’t seen Lonely yet from Joel Corry, Secrets from Regard and I’m going to take a stab at Rain On Me making an appearance too.

That Girl) Date entered: 17/04/2020 Chart sales: 929,900 Chart run: 71-20-9-8-6-6-6-7-8-9-8-7-8-15-18-23-26-27-40-33-33-37-41-42-49-50-x [26 weeks] Video: C7nIxBoyYAI Commentary Andrew Rayel is a Moldovan trance DJ who started at a very young age and has now been around for over 10 years in the industry however it was only a few years ago I first discovered him, with 'Horizon' being his breakout hit here and also a BJSC entry of mine. Two years later he is back in the year-end top 20 with 'Stars Collide', a song that also served as the breakthrough for fellow trance DJ Robbie Seed and... That Girl on vocals (actual stage name, lol). The song is a departure from Andrew's signature 'big room trance' sound with him instead going for an uplifting (higher BPM) trance anthem which seems to be what Robbie usually makes, so for all I know he may well have done more of the work on this track. Anyhow, it is a big stand out of its genre for the year, with high energy all throughout the track and big sounding production. It already sounds like a classic trance song for me, with the entire drop being a real hands in the air moment. It was also voted #4 in A State Of Trance's yearly poll - so clearly a favourite of trance fans in general. The first of these is another big fave of the trance community, having been voted #2 in A State Of Trance's Tune of the Year poll (won by Aly & Fila's 'Somebody Loves You'). It is also the inspiration behind what is my current user avatar, which is Gareth Emery wearing his own 'we'll be ok' face covering, an image I think is very fitting for these current times. The song was the first track released from my Album of the Year 'The Lasers', marking the first released track of his that he wrote the lyrics for (with the album being full of personal songs). He was inspired to write this from a plane journey he had whilst experiencing turbulence and thinking that the plane would crash and he wouldn't make it out alive, emphasising love for his family. It's a beautifully written song and with the lovely voice of Annabel to sing it, and to top it all off it has a classic trance breakdown taking up a significant portion of the track. Having broke through officially with 'Sorry' last year, I wasn't really feeling the big hype. It was a good enough song, cracking the lower reaches of my chart and thus far getting 29 plays, but I didn't love it like I often do for a huge dance hit. He however stepped it up for follow-up release 'Lonely', stylistically very similar song but for me very much improved. Controversially, I even prefer it to 'Head & Heart'. The track doesn't reinvent the wheel or wow me on a production level, but it is undeniably a big ole bop. With a big catchy chorus and some well timed piano stabs, it has just about all the elements of a great commercial house track. He doesn't quite manage to get two consecutive years of year-end top 10s but 'Runaway' is in the top 20, not bad for what was only an album track! It has a great driving rhythm and pulsating bassline and to use the comparison yet again reminded me a bit of CamelPhat if they were to go down a more trancey direction. It's got a great emotive vocal too from someone I hadn't heard of before nor ever since thus far. Hopefully she gets to appear on another trance track before long, but as ever here it is all about the big production. I would love to hear more progressive tracks like this from Armin as they're usually a lot better than his more pop and big room/festival focused efforts, and this one in particular is a big highlight of his discography thus far for me.
