Commentary

 

We now land on what is the highest 2020 Avicii release in the countdown, although the year-end #1 of last year 'Heaven' is still yet to be announced. It was of course the only song officially released last year with Avicii's name on it. Marked as a tribute, it saw Kygo re-work and finish the unreleased Avicii song 'Forever Yours' (and his original version remains so). Their good friend Sandro Cavazza appears on vocals, giving him a 4th #1 in my chart by association with Avicii & Kygo, although it does help that he is one of the better vocalists of their regular collaborators. It followed up from 'Happy Now' (EOY #20 in 2019) which was an unofficial Avicii tribute of sorts. The song most likely won't be going down as a big classic for Avicii, having not made any UK chart impact, but it was great to at least get something put out following the album. The Avicii influence on it is very plain to hear, but ultimately it does sound more like a Kygo song and indeed he is marked down as the primary artist. He is however the best artist they could've chosen to do the tribute however given how much Avicii inspired his work in general. The saxophone drop is a really nice touch particularly, which I'm glad they kept from the original (which I've still only been able to hear as a low quality live rip for now, so that version hasn't charted).

Gareth Emery is here again, only a couple of positions ahead of 'You'll Be OK' we have 'Elise' which is the highest track of the album in the chart, although he still has one other track left in the running. It's another rather personal track of his with it being named after and written about his daughter. She was rushed to the hospital in England whilst Gareth was touring in America which inspired the writing of the lyrics. In the instrumentation it has a great piano riff and like most of his best tracks culminates in a big synth led breakdown. The music video was rather great too with it showing the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, a lot better than many of the budget videos we got of people just dancing in their k!tchens.

One of the biggest breakthrough hits of the year came from Swiss duo Adriatique alongside Marino Canal, both who produce primarily melodic house & techno. Adriatique have actually been around for about 10 years, but it was only through skimming through the Beatport chart as I occasionally do that I came across this which I was rather intrigued by and put on my playlist. 10 weeks later and it finally reached #1 and it would go on to represent Danæviia in BJSC where it was an unfortunate DNQ, but at least it managed to get a few fans in the process. It's quite simply 5 and a half minutes of audio bliss, with lush synths and vocals throughout. It's also got an excellent break section in the middle which feels even bigger than the drop that follows. This song could very easily be back in the year-end top 40 for 2021 too, as it currently sits in the top five still.

Commentary

 

2019 was the year Jax Jones finally released an album, although we'd heard most of the tracks already and from what we hadn't there was only one truly great song on it, this one of course. It also acted as the return of Ella Henderson who has seemingly joined Becky Hill and Jess Glynne as being a top dance vocalist (although she did 2 dance features back in 2015 as well). Her voice really stands out on this so I'm very glad she eventually ended up with the track instead of Selena Gomez who this was meant to be for. The track brings out the best in Jax too with it being another of his house efforts with a great piano line too.

The track was further cemented as a big fave in 2020, with it now being in my top 3 favourite Jax Jones hits. Another one of those we will be seeing in the top 10...

Commentary

 

If one genre has grown in popularity throughout 2020 for me it is melodic house so with that in mind it only makes sense for Lane 8 to have two appearances in the year-end top 40. The highest of these is the title track from his third album 'Brightest Lights' and became one of the year's biggest sleeper hits here, now joining a small club of tracks with a higher year-end peak than weekly peak. The song does have an edit but it is all about the full 7 minute version for me as the song benefits from that extra bit of build up. It's just a lush and fairly chill track, it gives you such a warm feeling listening to it which really helped with its massive longevity throughout the year. He has a new single out this week, so we could very well be seeing him again in the 2021 year-end chart.

Commentary

 

Just missing out on a top 10 placing, though still doing better than I'd have ever expected for a Lady Gaga song in 2020, 'Rain On Me' becomes her highest peaking track in a year-end list at #11, her first appearance in the top 20 since 2011! Gaga was undeniably the biggest comeback story of the year in my chart. After years of diminishing quality, ultimately resulting in zero top 50 hits from 'Joanne'(!) with the 'A Star Is Born' era not doing a whole lot better, she finally embraced her dancepop roots again for the 'Chromatica' album. This time even incorporating elements of house and EDM which excited me. This was always going to cater to my taste more but I didn't anticipate what may well be my favourite song she's ever made coming in this. With a collab as massively hyped as this it could easily have ended in disappointment but in the end it managed to put her back at #1 in my chart, also giving Ariana her first ever top 10 hit. The song will be on just about everyone's year-end chart so I needn't really say more. It's just what pop music needed in the year that was 2020.

Blinding Lights, Another Life, Better Off Without You, Head & Heart and Don't Need Love are big faves from the 100-41 section but the top 40 is especially good so far.

 

Lose Control is of course a great start to the 40 but really pleased to see End of Time in here! :wub: It was very interesting to see K-391 and Alan remaking Ahrix's track 'Nova' which was quite popular on NCS, where the other two of course started out, and it worked pretty well! Agreed on Space Melody also being another pretty good remake.

 

All Night, Know Your Worth, Save You, Forever Yours, This Is Real and Rain On Me are all brilliant tracks too. So many of yours are in my top 100 of 2020 as well! (Although I have no idea if I'll ever get around to doing that on here, having never finished an EOY countdown here oops)

I’m not familiar with that original Ahrix song, End of Time remains great though, Alan Walker is seemingly great at remakes clearly although I wasn’t very fond of his Hans Zimmer one.

Commentary

 

We start off the top 10 with the first of two appearances for Martin Solveig. Only two performers have two top 10 appearances, both of which are involved in 'Tequila'. That is still to come however as first up we have 'Juliet & Romeo'. He has quite a limited chart history for someone with as many as six 'millionaires' but he does seem to be able to put out a really great tune when he wants to grab a chart hit. This one didn't quite manage UK top 40 but had a fairly lengthy run in the lower half of the chart and got Silver certified, which makes it a hit in my book. The song took a lot of inspiration from an earlier song by Kölsch, almost to the point of ripping it off, although I wasn't familiar with that original song so this was as good as new to me. A big highlight of the track indeed is that piano riff which was sampled. I also liked the cheeky 'Intoxicated' reference in the hook. Roy Woods who I hadn't heard of before turned out to be a good fit for the track, unexpectedly considering his usual genre is RnB/hip-hop. The song is upbeat all throughout and is exactly the type of dance track we need in the mainstream charts. Hopefully we get more like this to come in the album we're supposedly getting from Martin this year.

Nora En Pure has had a great 2020 getting 8 top 40 hits and without even releasing an album. The biggest of them all however wasn't a track in her usual style given that it is the Croatia Squad remix that is charting - although the original wasn't either. It is in collaboration with Lika Morgan who for those who don't know has a big habit of doing cover versions, this of course being one of them - a cover of the iconic Phil Collins hit. The original was in a similar ballad style, surprisingly, which didn't really work for me only getting to #99. I knew it had good remix potential though and a month later Croatia Squad answered my wishes turning it into one of my faves of the year. It's a great take on the track, and even has the famous drum roll in it towards the end leading into the final beat drop. Lika is a great vocalist for this sort of thing and the song works very well as a dance track (although big fans of the original are probably likely to disagree). It thus becomes the 3rd year-end top 10 appearance for both Lika Morgan and Croatia Squad, although never getting past #9 - and the 2nd for Nora En Pure.

Commentary

 

Amazingly with only 5 weeks of release time this ends up in the top 150, although all its time so far has been spent firmly at #1 where it remains for a 7th week as of today, so expect this a LOT higher up next year's chart. It was also my last BJSC entry of the year and one that finished in 10th. It's a beautiful song which was one of the most instant love tracks of the year. Laura's vocal is amazing and so emotional, and it's helped a lot by the atmospheric production with its piano and strings which I always love in a song. The beat is very inspired too sounding like none of my other #1s of the year, I believe it comes under the genre of 'future garage' but that was just from some googling. A truly outstanding song and one I definitely recommend.

Well I was right, and indeed it appears in this year's top 10. If the song was released in January (and had the same total points), it'd be charting at #4. What I said last year is still very much true, this was such a unique hit for me production wise and even amongst CloudNone's own discography - unfortunately none of his other material stood out much so he remains a huge one-hit wonder for now. And if I was ranking the year's hits based on how much I loved the vocal, this'd be right at #1 - Laura has never sounded better.

Commentary

 

When Regard broke through in 2019 with 'Ride It' I did find myself enjoying the song a fair bit but didn't think it was truly excellent. He surpassed expectations for the follow-up release 'Secrets' which shot straight in at #1, and now sits in the year-end top 10. The song managed to make UK top 10 too and is one of two UK top 10 hits in this year-end top 10. It is also the first of 2 appearances for Raye in the chart. It isn't a whole lot different for him, he definitely has his one style based on the 3 tracks he's put out, but is significantly improved from Raye's vocal. She consistently proves herself to be one of the best vocalists for commercial dance, even with this song she originally wrote as an RnB ballad before Regard gave it his treatment. The drops throughout the track have a big more punch to them as well which I really enjoyed. I wasn't so keen on the 'Say My Name' remake that followed, but hopefully he can step it up again for his next release (and it's really about time we got one, this has been long gone from the chart).

Juliet & Romeo in the top ten then, I simultaneously liked and disliked the track because it's such a blatant copy of Der Alte, which I was a huge fan of, and Kölsch isn't credited as an artist on it! The piano riff does however work well in the song, and it was unlucky to miss the top 40 this year.
