Can't Japan just run it in summer 2022? I know it's already been delayed a year but...

I think I read somewhere that it's to be this year or skip this one until 2024. I don't think they can delay it to 2022 for some reason or other. Too near to the next scheduled one.

Rumours that Wimbledon may be played behind closed doors but some players would rather it's cancelled again. They simply don't want to play when there's no crowd. Don't see why not. Most of their practice is like that.
heard wind of a friend of mine today being very anti-vax and its nice to have a spare space in my contacts...

So you'll lose a friendship because of that? :( Can't you accept that he/she has their own opinion.

An idea I've seen mentioned is to push Tokyo back to 2024, change Paris to 2028 (they've had delays in building due to COVID, so would likely welcome the delay), and move LA to 2032, which would be neat as it coincides with 100 years since the 1932 LA Olympics.

One the more under-reported aspects of the pandemic which I fear will have a lasting effect in years to come is that thanks to the pandemic, loss of work & isolation/stripping of of liberties that it has led to people who otherwise you would have considered sensible have become full-on conspiracy theorists and/or vaccine deniers. I've seen quite a few public figures that I would never have expected go that way, and even one of my friends legitimately brought up "The Great Reset", and claimed the vaccine was a plot to install microchips into people.

Sounds reasonable to me that.

Delaying again until 2022 would have a knock-on effect with the Birmingham Commonwealth games scheduled for July/August 2022, plus 2022 already has the Beijing winter Olympics scheduled.

I really hope that Paris and LA can both push back four years and let Tokyo have 2024 rather than Tokyo having to potentially wait a minimum of 12 years from when it was originally set :(

That makes a good deal of sense. It should also guarantee that the rebuilding of Notre Dame is completed in time for the Olympics.

Surely too simple, it sounds great and neat but there's got to be some people and sponsors that would block such a move. Though you'd have to imagine that there'd be no objections to giving them one of the next 3 no matter what, assuming the Japanese government would accept that, they might just have to back out completely.

They're still on the line that it'll be this summer, for the next few days at least. I want it to happen but I want it to happen at a point where it's happening safe so the world is watching the expensive light show as a relief from the pandemic and not in exasperation at them pushing on with it despite things not being safe.

The question of sponsors is an interesting one. I would guess that sponsors consider time zones and the likely television audience when deciding whether to sponsor a particular Games and how much to pay. However, I don't knopw whether they sponsor "The Tokyo Games" or "The 2020 Games". If the contract is lined to the location, it might not be as big a problem as a contract linked to the date.

Rachel's three friends want to risk it and visit us but have told them they can't. It's against the law and I can't afford a fine. Does the householder get one too.? I mean how can you be blamed if someone comes to your house? Be rude and not let them in? :o

You very much can and should be blamed the most in this scenario.

I don't believe societal pressure is a valid excuse to break any laws.

So there was a wedding party of 400 broken up by police according to bbc news this morning. Who says people don’t break the rules!
That proposed £500 payment if you get Covid and have to self isolate would just lead to more people in the lower risk categories not minding getting Covid or even deliberately trying to get Covid so they get the payment!

I've seen this mentioned a lot by people and I think it's a real "Daily Mail" way at looking at it. Yes, of course you will get some people that do that, but it will clearly only be aimed at people who can't work from home and earn under <20k a year and be claimed through PAYE. If you incentivise it so that if you do catch covid, you are not too badly out of pocket and get to 80% wages for 2 weeks then it makes sense.

Clearly they are seeing it spread through workplaces and people not wanting to self isolate. Think we have got to do something as it's going to be a problem in the future if we get cases down to a manageable level.

my brother is buying into this great reset conspiracy theory too which came as a bit of a shock in our last facetime, so I'm afraid you might be right.

the longer people keep ignoring the rules, the longer this is going to go on which just means the end doesn't appear to be in sight at the moment which is rather frustrating for me as it's holding back the start of my career.

An interesting poll from YouGov suggesting a wave of pro-vaccine sentiment sweeping Europe with UK the highest at 81% willing to take it.

Brains winning from conspiracies. We love to see it

(it is also at roughly 75% in The Netherlands and nearly 80 in Belgium)

My parents are borderline with this theory and I’m worried. I’m also worried about a lot of other things they’ve been saying recently.
