February 11, 20214 yr Yeah same. I have a like burning desire to yank it up over peoples noses when they’re covering more of their Chin then their respiratory tract. Like damn I didn’t know your chin could get the corona too. It’s got better since the gov mandated medical or FFP2 masks a couple of weeks ago as most folk now wear FFP2 masks and you can’t not cover your nose with them. Lockdown here extended until 7th March but hairdressers can open from the 1st of March! Our 7 day rate federally is now under 65. hopefully by the time the heads of states and the federal gov meet again at the start of March we will be below 35 and can start thinking about how to open things. Personally I would rather we get the rates as low as possible again before we do any reopening. But this time we need clear frameworks on what happens when the rates start to rise again. Can’t be in a September/October situation where the rates were rising unchecked and exponentially in Berlin while the city sat and went „oh no. This is bad. Stop having illegal parties. Oh no. Stop buying things between 11pm and 7am that will fix it for sure“ Our curfew is at 6pm lmao. For now it's bearable as it gets dark around that time but it's gonna be feel weird in a few weeks.
February 12, 20214 yr https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/frail...g-snow-23485454 Is it possible this postman was just following Covid distancing regulations?
February 12, 20214 yr https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/frail...g-snow-23485454 Is it possible this postman was just following Covid distancing regulations? Which I could get if he said "sorry it's covid, I'll call for help". Not sure it is in a postie's job description to help fallen pensioners but surely stuff like this is just common decency? If I saw someone had fallen over on the road in a pandemic I wouldn't keep my distance because of covid, the person could have suffered a serious injury!

February 13, 20214 yr I've had my first jab! My brother had quite bad symptoms after his a few months ago, but my mum had none. So I will see what happens to me oop. Was a largely pleasant experience going to get it done and everyone was very friendly. Here's to the future ~
February 15, 20214 yr Britain now has fewer new cases and hospitalisations than France (similar country, similar population size, different pandemic decisions taken) for the first time in months, although deaths are still higher. With the vast majority of vulnerable people vaccinated, the number of deaths in Britain should have really tumbled by Easter if not sooner, regardless of what happens to the rate of spread among young people. Good news!
February 15, 20214 yr Happy to say my mum has had her first jab, so both my parents are now vaccinated. That takes a little stress off my shoulders. I hope the vaccination program keeps going as well as it is currently!
February 15, 20214 yr My grandparents for their first jab yesterday and my dad is soon to follow. It's such a relief for me

I hope the vaccination program keeps going as well as it is currently! Great to hear, I can imagine that is a huge relief. Tbh I was skeptical of hitting the 15m target but we have. But my only concern is I do think the 15m figure includes a good percentage of people under 70. The take up in some BAME communities and even some social/care workers is a little concerning. But I guess we cannot force people to take a vaccine. The vaccination effect data should be coming this week so that will be really interesting to see too.
February 15, 20214 yr Can we step back from the government propaganda a bit. The vaccines are two doses so at absolute majority of people haven’t actually been vaccinated at all, they’ve been partially vaccinated but aren’t fully protected and so it won’t be a giant silver bullet until we start to see both jags given. For example Scotland has „vaccinated“ 1.25m people and just 15k have received two doses which means only 15.000 people are actually properly vaccinated despite the propaganda. For all the flaws in the German roll out, of the 2,7m that have had their first dose, 1,4m have also had their second. That’s almost THREE times as many fully vaccinated people as in the UK. It’s only when all these 15m people have had both doses are we really going to see a better and prolonged impact on case numbers
February 15, 20214 yr The official line is that everyone over 70 has been offered the vaccine. Leaving aside the fact that there are bound to be some people who have fallen through the net, I wonder how many people got their offer in the last few days and haven't actually had the jab yet. If they all have it in the next few days then it isn't a particularly big deal, but it would help if the government could be totally up-front. In a similar vein, we should be told more about what is NOT happening as a result of the vaccination programme. After all, the NHS staff involved will have been unable to do their normal job. Once all the high priority groups have been done (and maybe even before), it is surely time to consider whether the vaccination programme should continue to be the top (almost the only) priority. What will be left undone while fit and healthy 20-something-year-olds are being vaccinated? I'm no0t suggesting that the programme should be halted, but there is a case for slowing it down as we get further down the list. It might even allow for programmes elsewhere in the world to be stepped up where there is a problem of supply.

I know what I would rather have in this moment in time in the middle of the pandemic. You're going to see zero vaccination immunity in the community for months with that strategy. The second dose is just a booster and while it is important, the most immunity comes from the first shot. Plus the data (certainly with AZ) supports a 8-12 week gap for the biggest amount of immunity to build up. No one is getting full immunity when they have had 2x shots either, but certainly less likely to catch it.

There is no data currently to support the spreading of the Pfizer/BioNTech jag which is why it hasn’t been done in the rest of the world. Germany is also using Moderna on the correct schedule. So we’re not trading off either of those things. Properly administered the P/B one gives 94% protection. Properly vaccinate the oldest and most vulnerable and you get a proper and Long lasting Fall in pressure on the Health system and thus our only way out of this shite. Partially vaccinated, these old care homes still remain vulnerable at a much much lower protection rate. Given they cause the greatest Covid burden on the healthcare system id far rather folks were properly vaccinated from the start, even if that means the government can’t hide behind misleading and dodgy statistics that are misleading at best to hide its woeful pandemic management. Then you see posts like yours and realise just how easy this Government has it when people just fall for it hook line and sinker every damn time Another advantage in giving both jags properly is that you fully protect the most vulnerable and reduce the chance for a vaccine escape mutation to occur in partially vaccinated populations where there is still a ridiculously high incidence rate. Right now, as Slow as it is, I have much greater faith in the long term effects of the German vaccination program

Right now, as Slow as it is, I have much greater faith in the long term effects of the German vaccination program While I am not disagreeing with a lot of the points, in the UK we can't really afford to wait and go at a snails pace. Having some immunity is better than zero immunity and it does appear as if the thinking is the vulnerable will need a booster shot which can be tied in with the flu vaccination jab. Also, while our handling of the pandemic has been terrible, it's not like we are immune to it, even Germany has been hit hard now after handling the first wave so well. Of course a lot of this is down to the variant first discovered in the UK. I am not a fan of this Government at all, but you can't always criticise and look for holes when they get something right. Yes they are a complete bunch of arseholes but I can't fault them for anything major with the vaccination programme, they have left it to the NHS and given them the resource they needed. The scale up and transition has been exceptional. I can't fault them on this one when our hospitals are at complete capacity, we weren't in a position to wait for the 2x full doses.
February 15, 20214 yr Author Yeah the UK government have played a blinder with the vaccine, much of this is likely to be down to luck, but they definitely put all of their effort into ensuring a quick and successful rollout of it knowing that it would quickly end the worst aspects of this pandemic and allow them to take some credit/boost in the polls. The points made earlier in the thread about helping to ensure that the rest of the world is able to vaccinate quickly are still valid, it is vital to prevent transmission and not allow further varients to develop that reduce its efficacy. Most experts agree that the vaccine could be quickly altered to tackle any varient, but far better to aim for zero Covid and reduce the need for this outcome.
February 16, 20214 yr The government have done well with the vaccines but I agree with people being taken in by figures which fail to show second doses. The UK health system is perfectly set up to deliver a programme like this given the public nature of it and having many details of people readily available. Then the vaccine being made in the uk helps.
February 17, 20214 yr Author Starting to see an impact of the vaccine in the case data now- surely hospitalisations and deaths will be on a continued downward trajectory now to very low levels. @1361718512352452610
February 17, 20214 yr The RKI reporting this morning that Berlin is the third state in the federation to drop below the magic 50 :cheer: Nationwide we are now at 57 Schools here opening on Monday on a similar plan to Scotland so let’s see how that goes.
February 17, 20214 yr Scotland and Wales are phasing their school return but the rumours suggest England are planning to chuck everyone back in all at once on the 8th. I think they probably should have thought of phasing years groups back on the 22nd like Scotland and Wales but we’ll see what officially gets announced.
February 17, 20214 yr I think the government would undo a lot of the, shockingly, good decisions they've made over the last few months sending all the schools and colleges back at once. It should definitely be phased from the 8th, probably Primary first, then Secondary final years and then gradually a full return. Don't think it's the worst idea for some year groups (providing they can work well online) to just start back after Easter.
