January 7, 20214 yr What in the world is happening in Ireland though. I didn't notice they were doing so badly until I saw this. 4 days and their rolling average over 7 days has nearly tripled??? https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-data...;pickerSort=asc
January 7, 20214 yr Will be due to people travelling to and from there over Christmas period I would assume :(
January 7, 20214 yr I think we knew the 1000/day barrier would be breached this week - another 25K deaths are already 'baked in' even despite the lockdown because of the way this virus operates. Absolutely devastating as well as frustrating. : ( Just watching this documentary that Owen Jones put up, it's making me even more angry. -NUZfFTxALI That was very well done. @1347081938302087171 More news to make you angry — it's all so utterly bleak, and yet, preventable. 1,162 deaths today, Heartbreaking numbers. Awful — and we're likely a week or two away from the peak?
January 7, 20214 yr A little bit of hope though that the daily death rate may start to decrease: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55574662
January 7, 20214 yr A little bit of hope though that the daily death rate may start to decrease: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55574662 I was thinking how are deaths higher now than in March/April when we supposedly have better treatment/understanding available now. Additionally you would have thought the absolutely most vulnerable would have been most susceptible during the first peak.
January 7, 20214 yr I was thinking how are deaths higher now than in March/April when we supposedly have better treatment/understanding available now. Plus mask policies in shops too which we didn't have in March/April.
January 7, 20214 yr The lady who first suggested the clap for the NHS last year, says that she won't be joining in this year after receiving obscene messages and death threats online from people saying the NHS don't deserve applause as they're just doing their job and also from those saying Covid doesn't exist. Awful that she's had to put up with this.
January 7, 20214 yr Don't know if it's already been posted here but omg at this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tees-55579004
January 7, 20214 yr Don't know if it's already been posted here but omg at this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tees-55579004 Who’s going to break it to them that Astra Zeneca is part Swedish? Stick these idiots at the back of the queue. At least they can be safe in the knowledge that if they die, it will be an English death.
January 7, 20214 yr I was thinking how are deaths higher now than in March/April when we supposedly have better treatment/understanding available now. Additionally you would have thought the absolutely most vulnerable would have been most susceptible during the first peak. This is a new, more virulent incarnation of the virus though.
January 7, 20214 yr It’s is shocking though as it’s only easier to transmit and not more deadly plus the majority of people suffering now are under the age of 60 as it’s spreading through younger populations. So it’s pretty scary!
January 7, 20214 yr Hope it’s like Spanish flu and eventually just mutates and becomes a lot less lethal. It mutated each winter and by 1921 was just normal flu!
January 8, 20214 yr Was there any clapping in your street at 8pm last night then? None here. I feel sorry for the lady who first had the idea. She's having nothing to do with it any more after receiving obscene abuse and death threats online from people saying the NHS don't deserve it and are just doing their jobs. Edited January 8, 20214 yr by common sense
January 8, 20214 yr Thankfully no one took part on my street this time. Reviving the clap was a stupid idea (it wasn't a great idea in the first place tbf). What does it achieve? Absolutely nothing. It's just a chance for the Tories and Tory sympathisers to act like they care about key workers when they haven't bothered to give them a raise, any free parking for continuing to go to work and made the UK epidemic even worse through inaction causing them even more stress on the front line. If people want to show their appreciation, do something which genuinely helps/makes their lives easier, respect social distancing, stay at home and wear a fricking mask in public.
January 8, 20214 yr I never really liked the first one anyway, I just found it got to be quite hypocritical that so many Leading Tories and rule breakers had the nerve to do it, though I appreciate it had good intentions. But now the NHS need practical help and people to take the rules seriously and stay indoors, we are past pretending that empty gestures like clapping are making a difference (not that she deserved abuse for it of course).
January 8, 20214 yr Author I never really liked the first one anyway, I just found it got to be quite hypocritical that so many Leading Tories and rule breakers had the nerve to do it, though I appreciate it had good intentions. Voting against the Tories is a lot more helpful than simply clapping, agreed. Nice graphs here from John Burn-Murdoch showing the absolutely massive increase in demand of our ICU capacity this winter compared with previous ones: @1347200811303055364
