65 Justin Bieber feat. Chance the Rapper - Holy | 2-4-12-20-22-20-25-35-x

66 DREAMDNVR & Boy In Space - PSYCHO | 4-2-…

67 Mariah Carey feat. Ariana Grande & Jennifer Hudson - Oh Santa! | 1-4-6-x

68 Alec Benjamin - Demons | 1-3-9-16-19-27-33-40-x-37-x

69 Melanie C - In and Out of Love | 26-4-8-11-15-21-24-30-x

70 Benjamin Ingrosso - The Dirt | 3-5-11-18-22-38-x

Having scored inconsistent hits over 2019, Benjamin Ingrosso started 2020 off well with The Dirt, though it wasn't the original version I was into, it was the "alternative version" released simultaneously. This version made a decent acoustic track into an effortlessly catchy dance-pop banger, and often I now forget it's not the original all along! The song at #67 is also not the original version. Mariah Carey's Oh Santa! has been a festive favourite for a while though it hasn't cracked my top 40 before. The 2020 remix with Ariana and J-Hud added took it to #1, becoming Mariah's second #1 hit after, of course, All I Want for Christmas Is You. Also representing the #1 club in this section is Alec Benjamin's Demons, his fourth consecutive chart-topping single and one of five from the These Two Windows album. He has three more songs remaining in the countdown!

Melanie C's take on the Future Nostalgia sound was a big hit in my chart, with In and Out of Love becoming her third top 5 hit on the bounce, in one of the busiest weeks of the year too (with Laroi invasion and The Vamps also making their comeback!). Also released in a busy week, Baby, I'm Jealous has cemented itself as my favourite of Bebe Rexha's lead artist tracks to date. It's catchy and doesn't feel trend-chasing, and Doja Cat's rap is essential too. Unfortunately, it clashed with the unstoppable trio of Fin Argus & Sabrina Carpenter's Clouds, Boy In Space & NOTD's Therapy and Dua Lipa's Levitating, all of which are still to come. There's nothing quite as unlucky as Justin Bieber's Holy though, which lost a VERY narrow battle with Isac Elliot's Ghost for the #1 spot in September. Sadly, Holy lost, but it's actually the higher of the two here - fair to say it deserved the top spot but Justin's had two #1s since then, his first since 2017, so it's not all bad.

My first BJSC entry of 2021 is a carry-over track from last year - DREAMDVR and Boy In Space teamed up for a second time on PSYCHO, which I actually didn't hear until a week after release. This was mostly fuelled by my complete lack of enthusiasm for their first collaboration - AMNESIA came out a few months earlier and I really wasn't into it, being Boy In Space's only single not to make my top 40 at all. PSYCHO is a big improvement though, with a very punchy chorus, and it's only Boy In Space's fifth highest track in the countdown! Another of my BJSC entries drops out here too - Lance & Linton's extremely catchy Best Time's Right Now fared well in my chart, hitting #2, but much less well in the actual contest unfortunately and it failed to qualify.

Little Mix's highest track is Sweet Melody, a track I was so pleased to see reaching the top of the UK chart in 2021. I loved it from the start but it's another victim of a somewhat busy week and, primarily, the ongoing dominance of Clouds - we'll see where that places later! They at least beat one of the tracks above them that week though, Miles Wesley's Neighborhood is already out. The last track to appear is the highest non-top 5 hit that isn't by The Kid LAROI, well done to Olivia O'Brien who scored her first hit as a lead artist with the sassy, expletive-laden Josslyn, a track I discovered a short while before it was sent to BJSC! Of course, I'd previously sent Olivia myself alongside Seeb on Fade Out in 2019 and achieved a top 5 placement *.*

Artists: Top 10

3 Alec Benjamin

Up one from being my fourth favourite artist of 2019, Alec Benjamin has truly cemented himself as one of my ultimate favourites. I discovered him back in 2016, but it's over the past three years that I've truly grown to adore Alec's music. His songwriting skills don't contain heaps of metaphors, and in fact, they're actually quite simple. Alec tells stories, about experiences he's had, about people he knows, or even topical issues including domestic abuse on 2019's Must Have Been the Wind. 2020 saw Alec finally release his debut album (though 2018's Narrated for You is pretty much an album in all but the name Alec gives it). These Two Windows was everything I wanted from an Alec album. With 2019 singles Must Have Been the Wind, Jesus In LA and Mind is a Prison included, I knew it was going to be a great listen, and with three more 2020 singles arriving before the 10 track album's release, I'd actually heard more than half the album before it came out. That felt somewhat strange and perhaps overkill, but the four new songs slotted in brilliantly to make it a great listen from start to end. Just Like You stood out as a lovely track about how he took his father for granted when he was young, and Match in the Rain sees Alec switching up his typical guitar-led production. Though Let Me Down Slowly was a hit in 2019, the lack of chart success since then makes Alec feel sorely underrated still.

57 Why Don't We - Lotus Inn | 2-5-7-5-…

58 Ruel feat. Cautious Clay - say it over | 3-8-13-16-23-34-x

59 James Bay - Chew On My Heart | 1-6-13-22-22-25-32-x

60 Meghan Trainor feat. Nicki Minaj - Nice to Meet Ya | 3-7-12-25-32-37-x

I always say I love a pleasant surprise in music, and this section has a few of them actually. In fact, typically when something comes out of nowhere and really impresses me, it's usually an artist I didn't know of before, or didn't care much for. Meghan Trainor really surprised me with Nice to Meet Ya, though. I've always been a Meghan fan but I didn't expect her to release one of her best tracks to date in 2020, with a top notch guest verse from Nicki Minaj too! The track became her joint highest peaker with NO and her first top 10 hit since Me Too (or, technically, Hey DJ with CNCO, though it wasn't her remix that reached my top 10).

James Bay provided a brilliant surprise too. I adored his debut album but the second was a let-down all round, and though I've loved Wild Love and Peer Pressure, he's somewhat lost my enthusiasm. Chew On My Heart won it back in a big way, giving James his second #1 over five years after Hold Back the River reached the top. Cheat Codes also scored their first #1 in three years with the very infectious On My Life, their fourth chart-topper overall following hat-trick Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On), Shed a Light and No Promises in 2016-17.

Ruel's third EP Bright Lights, Red Eyes has spawned three top 10 hits so far - distance is the latest, reaching #9, and will feature in my 2021 EOY. The first of the remaining two is at #58, with the understated say it over, alongside lush guest vocals from Cautious Clay. Ruel has one more song to come. Other reliable hitmakers Why Don't We and Alec Benjamin follow here, the former with #2 hit Lotus Inn and the latter with social distancing-themed track Six Feet Apart, also a #2 peaker. Joining the #2 club in this section are Why Don't We's support act and friend EBEN, who scored his first hit with The Kids Are Alright in the middle of the year, and Canadian singer GUS, who reached #2 with Dancing Alone behind Shawn Mendes' Monster. Shawn's Wonder features in this section, ending as his top track of the year. The final track is Ashley Tisdale's Lemons, a wonderful follow-up to her Symptoms album that I truly loved in 2019. Lemons became her highest charting track to date, and first top 5 hit, at #3.

Nice to see PSYCHO here, one of the best songs from the last BJSC! Chew On My Heart is great as well, I think it might be my favourite James Bay song actually?

Giving Dancing Alone a listen now, it really has a nice vibe to it and the melody is really good as well.

42 Harry Styles - Golden | 9-24-23-34-x-31-30-8-4-8-10-15-19-25-32-33-26-…

46 Matteo Markus Bok - Háblale Claro | 1-2-2-5-11-18-31-30-36-x

47 Juice WRLD & The Kid LAROI - Reminds Me of You | 3-1-3-4-…

48 HRVY - NEVERMIND | 2-8-12-13-22-27-29-33-x

49 The Vamps - Married In Vegas | 2-6-7-14-18-22-26-40-x-40-x

50 Troye Sivan - Take Yourself Home | 6-1-3-6-8-11-18-26-40-x-31-x

The last section I'm revealing in a batch of ten starts off with Troye Sivan, who scored his fifth #1 hit in 2020. Take Yourself Home marked a new direction for Troye, one where he wasn't afraid to experiment a little. The building production is stunning, and my reaction to the drop at the end was quite something first time around! The novelty of the drop wore off quite quickly but it's still a brilliant track. The #1s keep coming in this section too, with Matteo Markus Bok's only hit of the year dropping out. Háblale Claro nonetheless provided him with his sixth chart-topper, and his first (almost) entirely in another language, flitting between Spanish and Italian as if it's nothing. The first of The Kid LAROI's five #1s is also out here - Reminds Me of You credits Juice WRLD first but it's Laroi who does the heavy lifting in the track. It's a rework of Kim Petras' song Reminds Me, which Juice was meant to guest-star on. Now his verse has surfaced in a fitting tribute with new lyrics written by Laroi, who Juice mentored. The final #1 appearing here is Chills by Why Don't We, the first #1 single of 2020. Though it was released as the final of their twelve monthly releases in 2019, its release date meant it qualified for 2020 in my EOY and just misses my top 40 here.

There's also some unfortunate #2 hits in this section. On the topic of Laroi, his monster hit NEED YOU MOST (So Sick) stopped The Vamps from extending their record for most #1 singles, leaving Married in Vegas to stall at a #2 debut instead. The new direction works really well for them though, and it set the tone for the Cherry Blossom album perfectly. HRVY's NEVERMIND was unlucky just a week before, losing out to Kylie Minogue's Say Something (still to come). It's certainly my favourite of his tracks since Hasta Luego anyway, and that's reflected in his chart history. Boy In Space's u n eye was a particularly unlucky #2 though, as it's ended up comfortably ahead of the #1 that blocked it. Rita Ora's How to Be Lonely dropped out at #115, so it's fair to say u n eye deserved the #1 spot. Boy In Space has another three tracks left in anyway!

Initially a slow burner, Cheat Codes lead vocalist Trevor Dahl scored his biggest solo hit since 2016's When You Come Home reached #1 with the gorgeous Can I Kiss You?, a touching yet also very catchy love song. It's one spot above Melanie C's Who I Am, a track that reminds me of the very early days of lockdown! The track became her first top 10 hit in my chart, and it's still her highest peaking. A busy week cruelly shoved it out of my top 10 the week after but it had a strong run and I really love the track, definitely one of her best solo songs to date. Speaking of band members going solo, Harry Styles' Golden closes the section. Continuing his incredible run of top 5 hits from the Fine Line era (all six singles have peaked there), Golden's single push has allowed it to feature in two consecutive EOYs (it was #177 last year).

40 Future Jr. - Sidewalk Teens | 3-9-14-21-16-21-30-34-x

I discovered Future Jr. in 2018 with a song called Forget About Me, which I rather liked but it proved to be a pretty apt song title, because I went on to do exactly that. I randomly found newer music by the Australian singer/songwriter, real name Matthew Nainby in 2020, and listened to his brand new EP. Sidewalk Teens was the only unreleased song on the EP when it came out, and instantly, I fell in love. It had such a brilliant energy to it, exactly the sorta vibe that would pop off so hard in a stadium with a huge chorus. It became Future Jr.'s first top 10 in my chart, peaking as high as #3, and I sent it to BJSC, where it lost out on qualifying as the result of a tie :( One of the more gutting moments of that contest in 2020 for sure. I've continued to follow his career since then, and the third EP of his trilogy (starting with I Think You'll Find, the parent EP to Sidewalk Teens) came out just two days ago!

39 jens - In or Out | 1-1-2-5-10-17-29-26-33-40-x

Jens Fredrik Solberg, born in Norway, has been on my radar since I discovered his song Lottery in summer 2019. I remember at the time thinking jens had real potential, with an ear for a catchy hook and some strong lyricism. He scored two more top 10s in my chart before 2019 was out, and kicked 2020 off strongly with In or Out, his first chart-topper. In or Out held off Ulrik Munther's Man in Need and spent two weeks at the top, serving as the lead single from his debut EP Call Me Back When You Get a Moment, which topped my album chart later in 2020. In or Out was another of my 2020 BJSC entries, and it fared even worse than Sidewalk Teens, but at least I was somewhat more prepared for that...! Nonetheless, I think jens is an undiscovered gem and we're bound to hear some more great stuff from him soon. His second #1 single, a collaboration with producer Bastiaan and singer Wiktoria, remains in my EOY.

38 SHY Martin feat. Boy In Space - Still the Same | 1-2-4-9-15-18-22-31-34-x

In 2019, I discovered Boy In Space at an Alec Benjamin concert. He was the support act, and I hadn't heard any of his music before, but instantly I fell in love. My favourite of those songs was On a Prayer, his most recent single at the time, which featured SHY Martin. Shy had previously charted with Mike Perry on The Ocean, a top 5 hit for me, but I hadn't really listened to much of her solo music. Of course, when these two Swedes teamed up for a second time, this time with Shy as the lead artist, I was very excited. On a Prayer topped my chart, and Still the Same followed - it was Shy's second #1 and Boy In Space's third, just a couple of weeks after Caroline reached the top and in fact, Caroline actually re-overtook the week after. Nonetheless, Still the Same is a gorgeous song with a great melody and strong production - the way it builds throughout is amazing!

37 Delta Goodrem - Paralyzed | 2-4-11-14-16-23-29-35-35-x

I was surprised compiling the EOY history below to find out that Delta Goodrem has never had an EOY top 10. She's one of my all-time favourite artists, I truly adore so many of her songs, but the EOY history isn't everything. 2020 brought her a tenth #1 in the form of Keep Climbing, but it's actually #2 hit Paralyzed that finishes as her top track of the year. Released against Isac Elliot's Weekend, which is still to come, Paralyzed had to settle for the runner-up spot in one of the busiest months in my chart's history. Nonetheless, despite a rapid departure from the top 10, Paralyzed stabilised well and became Delta's longest runner since 2016. Paralyzed struck a chord not just through Delta's immaculate vocals and impressive songwriting, but through the truth and honesty present in the track. Delta herself was actually paralysed in her tongue, after having her salivary gland removed and facing complications. She had to re-learn how to speak, and therefore how to sing, which makes this song even more of a triumph than it already is.

36 Miss Li - Complicated | 3-4-9-10-14-17-23-32-40-x

One of the biggest hits of the year in Sweden is Miss Li's Komplicerad, also known as Complicated in its English version. It's the English version that I personally prefer and the track became Miss Li's first hit in my chart, soaring to a peak of #3 behind Conan Gray's Wish You Were Sober and Melanie C's Who I Am. Despite this, Miss Li is actually no newcomer as I'm sure many of you know. With eight studio albums under her belt, the first from 2006, it perhaps seems unusual that it's taken until 2020 for me to be fully aware of Miss Li, but that's down to the strength of Complicated itself. It's a somewhat unassuming song, not trying to break down the boundaries of pop music, but providing some really fun pop escapism for just under three minutes. It was one of the sounds of the first lockdown for me and I remember it being a true "love at first listen" track. Miss Li only just scored her second top 40 hit in my chart this weekend actually, with Sorry debuting at #32, so perhaps 2021's going to be a good year for her?

35 The Kid LAROI - TELL ME WHY | 9-10-10-17-26-30-34-x-37-38-x

Undoubtedly the big breakthrough star of 2020 when it comes to my music listening, The Kid LAROI makes his first of EIGHT (!!!) appearances in my top 40. TELL ME WHY is the first to drop, and it's at an impressively high position considering its #9 peak. That said, for a #9-peaking track to spend three week in the top 10 is quite impressive in general. That's a testament to TELL ME WHY, though. The track is widely speculated to be a tribute to the late Juice WRLD, who mentored Laroi and was a close friend of his. The sequencing on Laroi's mixtape F*CK LOVE makes perfect sense, too - TELL ME WHY is straight after Juice collaboration GO. Its lyrics are honest and somewhat heartbreaking - "I can't count all the tears I cried, so many sleepless nights, watched all of my idols die, right in front of my eyes." The emotion is clear in Laroi's vocals as well. A stunner of a track and just one of many reasons why Laroi connected with me in such a huge way in 2020.

34 Powfu, Sarcastic Sounds & Rxseboy - ill come back to you | 26-3-3-6-7-15-26-30-x

Quite honestly, after death bed, I expected Powfu to be something of a one hit wonder. Even a great follow-up as a feature on Mishaal's Friends still didn't convince me, and initially, I was wholly underwhelmed by Powfu's actual follow-up single im used to it. I was pleasantly surprised when ill come back to you was a really great track, one that I loved from first listen. The track keeps all of the great elements of death bed, with strong production from Sarcastic Sounds, who also provided the chorus vocals in this track. Powfu's lyrics are once again strong, talking about moving away and leaving a girl behind, before returning later down the line and finding she's moved on with another guy. It's a brilliant track and one that certainly convinced me that Powfu's more than just one song.

33 The Kid LAROI feat. Lil Mosey - WRONG | 29-x-40-9-7-7-11-15-24-29-25-24-36-40-x

Laroi pops up again, this time on WRONG. This was one of the first tracks I'd heard by him, intrigued by the collaboration with Lil Mosey. After all, while I never charted it, Blueberry Faygo was quite a fun bop. There was no doubt that it was one of the most fun tracks on the album - much of F*CK LOVE is quite downbeat and sad, but WRONG brings the party, and Laroi proves his versatility. The track entered at #29 when I heard the album, before the music video release brought it back, soaring into the top 10. It finishes as the highest non-top 5 hit in the countdown, impressively high for a song of its peak - last year, the highest non-top 5 hit got to #58!

32 Dua Lipa - Physical | 2-6-11-20-20-24-35-36-24-27-33-39-x

I think my chart must be one of the only personal charts on the site where Dua Lipa's Physical didn't make #1! That's not to say I don't love it, because this EOY placing is really great for it, and I'd say it was one of the most unlucky #2 hits of the year, too. Its Friday release made it look like a clear #1 contender, but in February, Melodifestivalen on Saturday nights means anything could happen. In this case, Felix Sandman's BOYS WITH EMOTIONS was competing, and though predicted by most to be a direct finalist (meaning it wouldn't be released for another few weeks), it "only" qualified to the second chance stage, meaning it got an instant release on digital and streaming platforms. No complaints - BOYS WITH EMOTIONS is still to come, after all, but Physical became a distant yet comfortable #2. Of course, Physical itself is a pop triumph. The chorus hits exactly where it intends, making for an exhilarating listen every single time. Dua still has one more song to come, too!

31 Trevor Daniel & Selena Gomez - Past Life | 1-1-2-7-15-27-26-35-39-x

A year ago, I only knew Trevor Daniel from his chart hit Falling, and I wasn't overly enamoured by that one. It wasn't that I disliked it, but I just didn't care either way for it really, certainly not enough to enthusiastically check any further material out. A collaboration with Selena Gomez intrigued me, though, because in my opinion, Selena's one of the most consistently great popstars around, and that's shown by her having the fourth most top 10s in my chart's history. I loved Past Life from first play - melodically it's brilliant, and I'm always a sucker for production that grows and builds as the song goes on, which Past Life makes good use of, as well as the light and shade between the verses and choruses. Trevor and Selena's voices mesh really well together, and I do like the solo version as well, but I'm much more drawn to the duet. It became Trevor's first #1 (coinciding with a #1 album and a top 40 debut for Falling, how the tables turned!) and Selena's third.

2 Boy In Space

I touched on this earlier but I discovered Boy In Space at an Alec Benjamin gig in November 2019. I'd never heard of him before, but I was immediately wowed by his music. The good news was that I was attending Alec's tour again the very next day (still in London but a different venue), so I had twenty-four hours to spam Boy In Space's existing seven tracks before seeing him again. I felt so excited, knowing I'd discovered someone really amazing, and he was just as great the second time too. His voice is unique, much like Alec's own - it sounds younger than his years. It contrasts with the honesty and experience of his lyrics, about unrequired love, break-ups and more. All seven of his tracks made my top 40, six in the top 20 and four top 10. 2020 had Boy In Space's name written all over it.

His first release of the year was Caroline, the eighth and final track on his setlist but was unreleased at the time. Nonetheless, I remembered the tune and was SO excited for its release. It was so worth it, too, because it's one of my top songs of the year and still to come in my countdown. He had two further #1s (Still the Same and Therapy) and another three top 10s (u n eye, Forever Young and PSYCHO) over the year, and even though he's yet to release any substantial project (his debut EP is coming soon), the quality of the singles has been so high and I've continued to be obsessed with his 2018-19 releases as well.

Stay tuned - my #1 artist commentary will be coming later in the countdown...!

30 Ruel - as long as you care | 1-3-5-10-15-18-21-26-36-x

One of the biggest breakout stars of the past few years for me, Australian singer Ruel only turned 18 last October. Despite that, he's notched up a consistent run of hits in my chart, and in 2019, Painkiller became his first #1 and his first EOY top 10 hit. 2020 didn't quite bring another EOY top 10, but the lead single to his third EP still gave Ruel another hit to add to his growing tally. Released in September, as long as you care was an instant hit in my books. His killer voice shines through over production from regular collaborator M-Phazes, and he proves once again that when it comes to music, Ruel is older than his years. as long as you care became Ruel's second chart-topper and his first #1 debut, and it finishes 2020 as his biggest hit of the year. Ruel's debut album is set to come in 2021 apparently, and with a new single out this coming Friday, it's looking to be another great year to be a Ruel fan.

29 Ulrik Munther - C'est la vie | 1-3-4-4-7-14-21-36-36-38-x

From a relative newbie to an old favourite, Ulrik Munther is one of my all-time favourite artists. His first two albums in particular sit as two of my favourite albums ever, and the quality across his entire career has been amazingly consistent. That's quite remarkable when Ulrik's not had a big label behind him in recent years, and though production is notably more stripped than it used to be, Ulrik still shines through his lyrics and vocals. C'est la vie is the prime example of this, too. It's a track about growing up and moving on, letting go of stuff you've kept for sentimental reasons only, and it's a track I'm sure everybody can relate to - I know I can. The track became Ulrik's eighth #1 and second of 2020, following Gloom. which is still to come (and Don't Worry went on to top my chart later in the year too).

28 The Kid LAROI & Juice WRLD - GO | 3-5-5-10-15-21-22-32-39-x-30-32-x

The song that started it all! I remember seeing this song doing somewhat decently in the Spotify charts and had no idea who The Kid LAROI was, and Juice's previous single with Trippie Redd hadn't come close to the top 40, so I was quite surprised that this teetered on the edge of entering. Follow that with a mixtape that almost made the top 10 a bit later down the line, and I decided to give his music a spin. I rather enjoyed GO on a first play, certainly enough to keep investigating some more of his material. The rest, as they say, is history...! There's a special something about GO, knowing how close Laroi and Juice were, and the fact it's one of a small number of tracks they did together. The chorus is also extremely catchy and it makes for a turning point in his mixtape, to a more reflective chapter of his break-up story. GO entered my chart at #3, Laroi's second highest track that week, though SELFISH overtook a week later and it settled as my third favourite from the original F*CK LOVE project (the remaining three songs below are all from the SAVAGE re-issue).

27 Kylie Minogue - Say Something | 12-1-7-7-8-16-22-23-29-39-x

I was surprised to see just how small Kylie's EOY history was below when compiling this post! I've been a Kylie fan for a while now but I suppose there was a pretty big gap between Kiss Me Once and Golden, and I really wasn't that fussed with Kylie Christmas :kink: Nonetheless, she has two previous EOY top 40s to her name, and now Say Something makes it three. Crazily, before 2020, Kylie didn't have a #1 to her name in my chart. Dancing came the closest, peaking at #2. Say Something made light work of changing that. Debuting at #12 on just one day of availability, Say Something soared to #1 in its first full week, and it's easy to hear why. With lush production and an unconventional structure, Say Something grabbed me by the end of its first play - that final minute or so is truly heavenly. Don't read too much into the 1-7 fall the following week, that was the "Laroi Week" as I'm naming it - three Laroi tracks plus new singles from The Vamps and Melanie C and a huge new discovery from Bastiaan, jens and Wiktoria (which is still to come) pushed it down!

Hey Joseph :hi:

These are my favourites from your top 40 list:

Boy In Space - Caroline

Doja Cat - Say So

Dua Lipa - Physical

Dua Lipa feat. DaBaby - Levitating

Harry Styles - Falling

Harry Styles - Watermelon Sugar

Kylie Minogue - Say Something

Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me

The Pussycat Dolls - React

Why Don't We - Fallin' (Adrenaline)

Great to see 'Physical' up at #32 when it didn't quite peak at #1 in your chart! It's okay, its 12 weeks at #1 for me can make up for it not quite reaching that for you :kink:  I agree that it's a total pop triumph - my favourite song of 2020. My second favourite 'Rain On Me' still in the running - looking forward to seeing where it places!
