We start off the new year as it should be with a brand new #1! It is congrats to Worakls & Rusanda Panfili who claim the year's first #1 with 'Storm', leaping a mammoth 53 places in the process to do so (although they'd have been 11th without Christmas songs last week). It is the third hit, and first #1, for French DJ Worakls - following 'Elea' (#31, 2018) and 'Coeur De La Nuit' (#15, 2019). Rusanda is a Moldovan violinist, who 'Storm' is the debut hit for. The track is a 7 minute orchestral house instrumental, and as such it is the first instrumental track to reach #1 in the 2020s (Boris Brejcha's 'Gravity', which spent 8 weeks at #1 last year, did however have very few spoken vocals). The last track with absolutely no vocals to make #1 was Fatum's 'Mowgli' in August 2018.

 

It is thus a return to #2 for Aly & Fila with 'Somebody Loves You', now completing a 10th week in the top 2 including 8 weeks at #1. Another former #1, 'Home' by Adriatique & Marino Canal, rebounds to #3 - helped by its appearance in the current round of BJSC TBO (best of the DNQs). It is the song's 19th week in the top 10 and now also completes half a year in the top 50, having peaked at #1 for 5 weeks. At #4 we have a new peak for Vize & Alan Walker with 'Space Melody' - having entered at #9 two weeks ago, it would've climbed last week had it not been Christmas and now climbs again giving Vize their first top five hit. It is Alan Walker's first top 5 hit since 'Play' (which sampled 'Eurodancer') - this new track samples 'Resurrection' so clearly the trick to getting big hits on my chart for Alan is to heavily sample early 00s dance tunes. Completing the top 5 is Nora En Pure who peaked at #2 with 'Wetlands' two weeks ago. Nora also returns to the top 10 with 'Enchantment', her latest single, at #9.

 

Also back in the top 10 is ilan Bluestone, re-peaking at #7 having dropped from there to #29 last week with 'Paid For Love'. Tinlicker also re-enter the top 10 with their 'Children' remake, back at #10. Alongside this week's #1, also entering in the top 10 for the first time is the new single from BT - 'Walk Into the Water' is up to #8. It follows the former #1 hit 'No Warning Lights' and the #11 peaking album track/Danaevii single 'Windows'.

 

Gareth Emery & Ashley Wallbridge's new collab under their Cvnt5 project rebounds to a new peak of #13. Assaf re-peaks at #20 with 'Lost At Sea'. The rest of the top 20 is filled with re-entries from recent big hits. Getting particularly big boosts are two of the year's biggest hits in 'Gravity' and 'Afterglow' (NOT the Ed Sheeran song, that won't be charting!), now back in the top 15 despite having over 40 chart weeks each.

 

Whilst the end of year effect boosts a lot of fairly old songs in the chart, there are still three songs in the remainder of the top 40 getting new peaks. The first of these is Miley Cyrus with 'Prisoner', now out-peaking 'Midnight Sky' by rising up to #26. Tiësto also re-peaks with 'The Business', up to #27 despite having sat all of December out of the top 40. John Summit gets his 2nd top 40 hit this week with 'Fine Line', climbing to #30 to follow up #11 hit 'Deep End'. At the very bottom end of the top 50, Martin Garrix gets a second top 50 hit under the Ytram alias with 'Alive' rising to #48. Redondo also jumps to #49 with 'My Love' after bubbling in the very low end of the chart for the last 7 weeks. Finally, Boris Brejcha has this week's highest brand new entry with 'Puzzle'. It becomes his third top 50 hit.

 

As expected/planned, all of last week's Christmas music has kindly exited the chart for another year. No doubt that they'll all be back again by December, of course. Unless I end up changing my chart rules. :P
