The old MTV European Top 20 chart, which had been broadcast on MTV Europe for more than 20 years, ended in 2012. However, it looks like since January 4, 2014 some European "chart" has started being broadcast again on MTV Europe. The chart is broadcast on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 CET and on Sundays from 6:00 to 8:00 CET.

Previously the chart seemed to be a Top 40 but in recent years MTV Europe sometimes has also shown positions between number 50 and number 41, indicating a Top 50. However, not all the positions are shown - some of them are skipped each week.

The songs that are skipped on this "Euro Top Chart" seem to be one of two cases: either songs that aren't played on MTV Europe in general (especially if they don't have an official video yet); or when an artist has more than one song in the chart, not all are shown.

It's also notable that the upper part of this chart is basically the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart that is broadcast on MTV Italy.

The Top 2 is completely changed! Last week's number 1 - "Willow" by Taylor Swift - falls to number 17; "Live Goes On" by BTS, which was at number 2 last week, makes an even bigger fall to number 29; while "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry and MNEK jumps 17-2...

...And there is a new number 1 - "Afterglow". It becomes Ed Sheeran's seventh chart-topper after "Sing", "Thinking Out Loud", "Castle On The Hill", "Shape Of You", "Perfect" and "I Don't Care" (with Justin Bieber).

IS THIS A NEW BEGINNING?

First of all, MTV Europe has changed its schedule. Now the "Euro Top Chart" is broadcast from 9:30 to 11:00 CET on Saturday.

However, there also seems to be another change, which is much bigger... This edition of the chart doesn't really look like a direct continuation of last week's edition - it looks like another chart!

Until last week, the upper part of this chart was basically the same as MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20". Very rarely were there some extremely small differences... But this week's edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" looks like a direct continuation of last week's edition - while MTV Europe's "Euro Top Chart" is completely different!

Maybe MTV Europe's chart and MTV Italy's chart are separate charts now?...

Everything is so different! "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes" by Ofenbach spent a few weeks in MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" in November 2020 but MTV Europe refused to play it - now it appears at number 15.

It's great to finally see some songs that are having success around Europe like "Without You" by The Kid Laroi and, especially, "Drivers License" by Olivia Rodrigo - which MTV Europe refused to play until last week, even though it even reached number 1 in MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"!

It was also unbelievable how "Mood" by 24kGoldn and Iann Dior only peaked at number 8 in this chart - when it was so successful that it should have reached the top... Well, now at least it's at number 3!

What about the new number 1? As I mentioned last week, a year ago "Blinding Lights" was at the top (and it's still in the chart!!!!!!)... Now The Weeknd is at number 1 again but with another song - "Save Your Tears".

"My Head & My Heart" by Ava Max appears at number 19. The song is based on "La La La La La" by ATC. I remember when during one of the editions of the chart back in 2000 the chart presenter (VJ Trey) mentioned a song with the lyrics "La La La La La"... I thought that was a sign that it would debut soon... However, it never charted in MTV Europe's European chart...

"Your Love" by ATB and Topic is based on the former's "9 P.M." and now reaches the same peak position as that song did in 1999 - number 15.

The new number 1 is "We're Good" by Dua Lipa - another baffling chart-topper which, at least for now, hasn't had that much success across Europe to be deserving of the position. Last year was very good for Dua Lipa as she had 3 number ones - "Don't Start Now", "Physical" and "Prisoner" (with Miley Cyrus).

"Selfish" by Madison Beer appeared in a few European countries' charts a year ago. For some reason it's at number 21 in this chart NOW?!

"Friday" by Riton and Nightcrawlers (currently at number 19) samples the latter's "Push The Feeling On", which peaked at number 4 in the chart in 1995.

...And "What Other People Say" by Sam Fischer and Demi Lovato might possibly be the most flabbergasting number 1 of all time in MTV Europe's European chart! At the moment, it can be found in 2 charts - the UK chart, with a peak position of number 83 (last week - number 95); and the Irish chart, with a peak position of number 69 (last week - number 76)...

This is Sam Fischer's second hit in this chart after "This City", which peaked at number 14 last year. As for Demi Lovato - this is their second chart-topper after "Solo" (which wasn't solo but a collaboration with Clean Bandit).

It is interesting, that on Friday the best 4 was as bobiloko wrote, but on Sunday as I have written.

 

On the other hand, in my opinion, the chart is based on also on playlists, for example 'Most Wanted' videoclips on 'MTV Push' artists, when MTV Hungary played their songs more often, so they were in a good position in this countdown. They call it Euro Top Chart, because we also have Local Chart, with Hungarian artists, but in this one only foreign videoclips are played, of course.

 

And as I know, it is not possible to watch MTV Hungary online on its website. There is no area there, either to check these playlists, unfortunately.

 

I can write the chart with pleasure, if it is required, but as I can see it is also recommended to check twice, the Friday and Sunday edition because of the different positions.

"My Head & My Heart" becomes the second number 1 of Ava Max in this chart after "Sweet But Psycho", which spent a total of 8 weeks at the top. Interestingly, last year a similarly titled song also reached number 1 - "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry and MNEK. Probably the funniest example happened at the end of 1990 when "I'm Your Baby Tonight" by Whitney Houston was replaced at the top by... "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" by Robert Palmer and UB 40!!
