Let him entertain

NAUGHTY lad Robbie Williams blew off some steam kicking the soccer ball with Melbourne Victory when he was in town recently and souvenired a jumper from captain Kevin Muscat. But how did the kick-to-kick come about? Football Federation Victoria's Michael Zappone tells us they approached Robbie's manager upon hearing he was coming down, thought it was a longshot, but within 24 hours they had a confirmation email. Then Team Williams took over.

"They booked Olympic Park and on the day his tour manager and minders swept the venue and put black mesh on the fence to block out the gaps."

That didn't stop photographers. The male-bonding ritual was cemented when Robbie handed over 30 free tickets to his concert, delighting the boys. So, what's Robbie like when he's not fagging on stage? "He's just a bloke, an average lad," Zappone said. "He loves Australia and said he could see himself living here. It's the climate, the culture and the people." Which gender? "He said the girls are very friendly." We can read between the sheets, sorry, we mean the lines. And Robbie is so friendly back.

Johnny believes the panto magic

Wednesday, December 27, 2006

Jonathan Wilkes has said he has no trouble identifying with his panto character - because they're both a hit with the ladies.

The TV presenter and musician is starring in a production of Aladdin in his home town, Stoke-on-Trent, where he also appeared in the pantomime Mother Goose last year.

Joker Jonathan, who often appears on stage at the gigs of Robbie Williams, his best mate, explained: "Well what's Aladdin, he's kinda like a poor boy who's a bit of a cheeky chappy, likes to pull the women... Yeah, I'm Aladdin."

He will be joined on stage by Coronation Street's Vicky Entwistle - better known as Janice Battersby - and singer Carolynne Good who was one of the stars of BBC One's Fame Academy.

Johnny's love of the the stage stems from his childhood.

"The first time I ever went to the theatre as a kid was to watch a pantomime and I just was blown away," he said.

"That's what made me fall in love with theatre and that's why still today I love theatre... Cos I believe the magic, for those two and a half hours I was somewhere else."

CLUBBNG CLASS OF '06

Clubbing Hogmanay06 map Here is your guide to what's happening near you

By Stuart Barrie

MAKING a list of my best tunes, albums and mixes from the past 12 months wasn't easy. There's been so much fantastic music I could easily have done a top 50.It was the year minimal was the biggest noise, trance DJs ruled the world again and everyone swapped their funky house records for a darker, electric sound. So here's my list of all the tunes that mattered in 2006.

TUNES

1 Fedde Le Grand - Put Your Hands Your Hands Up For Detroit. Easily the most underground dance tune to cross over in years.

2 Union of Knives-Evil Has Never Stunning piece of menacing electro-rock from the superb Glasgow three piece.

3 Pete Heller -Simpler Not much to this, but boy, was it an effective dance record.

4 Hot Chip - Over and Over The highlight of their explosive live show and even a favourite at NME.

5 Chris Lake - Changes The Scots producer burst on the scene in spring and DJs are still playing it.

6 Depeche Mode -Just Can't Get Enough (Dirty South mix)

One of my all-time favourite bands get toughened up with electrifying results.

7 The Egg feat David Guetta-Walking Away A huge crowd pleaser.

8 Robbie Williams Lovelight (Soulwax Mix) The coolest Robbie's been in ages courtesy of a mind-blowing remix by the coolest people to ever have come out of Belgium.

9 Mason - Exceeder An Ibiza anthem that won't go away. There's a new vocal version but the original is best by miles.

10 MANDY vs Booka Shade - Body Language One of the tunes that defined the minimal sound and is now a real crowd pleaser.

Robbie finished - I don't think so!

If the British tabloids are to be believed Robbie Williams is history. Although their steady flow of articles telling us this and the many put downs he's recently had in the press, seem to me to contradict this statement some what.

But Robbie can rest assured that the British public don't always believe what they read, with recent polls in the UK revealing he is still a much loved and admired performer.

Here's what the polls say:

Poll 1 - BRITS’ WISH LIST THIS CHRISTMAS

When it comes to Christmas day, the best most of us can hope for is a no-stress day with our families. However new research carried out by Disney Store in celebration of their Christmas Wishes campaign has uncovered that rather than a sweater knitted by Gran, most of us would wish for a celebrity or two to make the big day more eventful.

Robbie Williams tops the nation’s wish list as revealed by the YouGov poll of 2,571 adults to discover which celebrity we’d most like to spend the festive period with.

Results were as follows:

1. Robbie Williams – 14%

2. Peter Kay and Kylie joint – 11.5%

3. Paul O’Grady and Jonathan Ross joint – 10%

4. Gordon Ramsey – 7.5%

5. Jamie Oliver – 7%

6. Johnny Depp and George Clooney joint - 5%

7. Kelly Brook, Daniel Craig, David Beckham and Cliff Richard joint – 3%

8. Ant& Dec and Brad Pitt joint - 2%

9. Angelina Jolie and Carole Vordeman joint - 1%

10. The Queen – 0.5%

Poll 2 - WHO DO YOU WANT TO SING A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Chocolatier Thorntons asked 2,000 Britons which celebrities they would like to see perform a Christmas carol especially for them.

Although second to Charlotte Church, Robbie was top male by a mile, as the results below show:

1. Charlotte Church (27.9%)

2. Robbie Williams (26.3%)

3. Kylie Minogue (24.3%)

4. Gary Barlow (6%)

5. Katie Price and Peter Andre (3.4%)

6. Cheryl Cole (3.3%))

Poll 3 - BEST OF BRITISH

More than 1,000 people took part in the survey to find the Best of British by website www.thebestof.co.uk , which recommends shops, restaurants and businesses in British towns and cities.

And who came second in the category Best British male band/pop star, of course Robbie Williams, beaten only by the iconic Beatles. Here the list:

1. The Beatles

2. Robbie Williams

3. Queen

4. Take That

5. Coldplay
