ARIA Chartifacts - 04/12/06

Every first week of December for the past four years, there has been a

similar No.1 single. This year is no exception, as last Sunday night the new

Australian Idol was crowned, and this year it went to former Irishman Damian

Leith (now Aussie resident). As with those previous years, one week of sales

and they shoot to the top of the charts.

So this week the 2006 Australian Idol winner claims the No.1 spot in

the country with his debut single “Night of My Lifeâ€. The previous winners

and their songs are…

1-Dec-2003 – Angels Brought Me Here – Guy Sebastian (3 weeks) –

3xPlatinum

6-Dec-2004 – Listen to Your Heart – Casey Donovan (2 weeks) –

2xPlatinum

5-Dec-2005 – Maybe Tonight – Kate DeAraugo (2 weeks) –

1xPlatinum

4-Dec-2006 – Night of My Life – Damian Leith (1st week) –

1xPlatinum

Every track has been at No.1 the same week of the year (week 48), and

they have all achieved some sort of Platinum status within their first week.

The song “Night of My Life†is the 17th Number One song with the word

‘Night’ in its title, the last of which was Kate DeAraguo’s “Maybe Tonightâ€

this week last year. It’s also the 7th ‘Life’ No.1 single, with “Bring Me to

Life†by Evanescence being the last ‘Life’ track at the top of the charts

back in May 2003.

I also noticed that of all the Solo Australian Male Artists to have

achieved No.1 this decade (and there are 8 of them), seven have been from

Reality Music Shows. Chris Franklin was the first Australian Solo Male

artist to hit No.1 this decade in February 2000 with his comedy recording

“Blokeâ€. Since then the other seven were Scott Cain (PopStars), Guy

Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Joel Turner, Anthony Callea, Lee Harding and now

Damian Leith. Its also the 50th Solo Australian Male Performed Song to hit

No.1 in the past 66 years, the first of which was back in 1951, Les Welch

with “The Thingâ€, and Damian is the 33rd Solo Australian Male Performer to

hit the top of our charts. He’s also the 87th Australian Performer to hit

the top spot, with the 136th Australian Performed Song, and the last Aussie

act to claim the top of the charts was Youth Group back in April 2006 with

their cover of “Forever Youngâ€.

The second of four new entries comes in at No.11 this week, and is a

former No.3 US Single. Fergie’s new single “Fergalicious†is the follow-up

to her No.3 single “London Bridge†(No.34 this week), and is the second

single off her debut album “The Dutchessâ€.

In the country this week is Scottish born/London based folk-singer

Sandi Thom, and with her former 10-week No.1 single “I Wish I Was a Punk

Rocker†still in the Top 5, her follow-up this week debuts at No.41. “What

if I’m Right†is the second track from her debut album “Smile…it Confuses

Peopleâ€, and should rise next week due to her promo tour.

The last new entry comes in at No.50, and is the fifth track released

from their former Top 3 album “All the Right Reasonsâ€. “If Everyone Caredâ€

follows up their last Top 30 single “Animals†which reached No.27 back in

early September.

U2’s latest Best of remains at No.1 on the Australian Albums chart this

week, and also picks another week of Platinum sales. Last week when it

debuted, it attained a Platinum Certification, and this week it claims it’s

Double Platinum status. It also becomes the first U2 album since “All That

You Can’t Leave Behind†back in November 2000 to have stayed at the top for

a second week. Their 2002 Best of (90-2000) and “How to Dismantle an Atomic

Bomb†both only stayed at the top of our charts for a single week.

It also takes U2’s overall tally of ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1†to 23

weeks, moving them up to equal status with Michael Jackson, who achieved his

23 weeks with only five albums, whereas U2 have done it with 10 albums.

The highest new entry this week comes in at No.2, and is the third

album by the only Italian act to reach No.1 in Australia. il Divo debut with

“Siempre†(which is Italian for ‘Always’) to give them three out of three

Top 2 albums. In May 2005 they took their debut album “il Divo†to No.1 for

two weeks, and then in November 2005 they took their second album “Ancoraâ€

to the top for 3 weeks. So let’s see in the next couple of weeks if they can

make it a hat-trick of No.1’s.

With six Australian Idol performers in the Top 50 Singles this week,

there are also 3½ in the albums chart (the ½ is Idol Judge Marcia Hines).

Guy Sebastian and the Young Divas are now joined by Anthony Callea with his

second album “A New Chapterâ€, which debuts at No.9 this week (the same place

his lead single off the album “Live for Love†debuted four weeks ago on the

singles chart). His debut self-titled album was a No.1 album back in April

2005.

Incubus debuts at No.15 with their latest album “Light Grenadesâ€. It’s

the follow-up to their February 2004 album “A Crow Left of the Murderâ€,

which debuted and peaked at No.2.
