I must admit to owning only 1 album by Lou Reed "Transformer" but there are some great tracks on it, like Perfect Day, Satellite of love and Walk on the wild side.

They might not have sold huge quantities of records but I think they had a tremendous influence on music.

Quote from Reed defining rock n roll " One chord is fine, two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz.

Anyone else remember him.

yeh know what you mean,I used to love Perfect Day the original version, but since it was covered by everyone for the charity song, not as keen on it as i used to be.

The Velvet Underground are the genesis of pretty much ALL non-mainstream, alternative, indie, avant-gardist rock music, and I would say they were indirectly responsible for the whole CBGB movement and later Punk Rock/New Wave/Goth... If you were to try and actually quantify their influence in terms of listing the amount of bands they are a direct or indirect influence on, then you'd probably be looking at a list that would stretch for miles....

Good GOD!!!! :o :o

If I'd won the National Lottery or summat, that record would be mine!!!!!

think i'll stick with their album i got free from the independent

Transformer sold bucketloads did it not? Umm, Velvet Underground - yeah, great stuff...totally different...a much greater influence than the Beatles ever had etc.

Don't underestimate the importance of John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Moe Tucker though...oh and Warhol probably.

For my money John Cale's done far, far better stuff since than Loud Reed too.

my mate wants to get this for his collection, but then again he likes finding the most obscure random stuff

Metal Machine Music is totally unlistenable. It's 4 sides (on the vinyl) of electronically produced feedback. One side has a repeating groove so it plays forever (like Sgt Peppers or The Who Sell Out). There's also a rumour that sides 3 and 4 are sides 1 and 2 played backwards. I listened to a side once and it didn't kill me but the thought of three more sides was too much to take. :(

You're right. Four sides of white noise is much better than four sides of $h!te boys.

Depends on what mood you're in really... I've listened to it a few times and each time I've had different feeling about it... Let's face it without that album, a lot of today's pioneers of Electronica and Industrial probably wouldn't exist, Aphex Twin certainly must have that album in his collection somewhere....
