Top 40 Chart Commentary

It's a very big week for the chart with an absolute ton of new entries, 16 in all to the top 40! It is in no doubt thanks to the combined effect of Eurovision and Buzzjack Song Contest which accounts for the vast majority of these.

 

01 NE 01 Worakls and Wen Yu ~ Inked

However the brand new #1 is from a 'regular' release, being the new single from French composer/producer Worakls, 'Inked' with Asian composer Wen Yu. It is the follow-up to 'Storm', which was the first #1 of the year and spent 4 weeks at the top. This marks Worakls' second #1 single - and removes Boris Brejcha from #1 after 3 weeks with 'House Music', down to #3.

 

02 NE 01 Go_A ~ Shum

The highest Eurovision entry of the year, and in fact the highest a Eurovision song has got in the chart ever since Loreen's 'Euphoria' went to #1. It is the first hit for the Ukrainian band, after last year's provisional entry 'Solovey' only managed to make it to #65.

 

05 NE 01 Chariot ~ Sky Wheel

The highest foreign BJSC entry of the contest just finished, sent by Leww/Aeroche, and the highest such an entry has made it in the chart all year so far, giving the Swedish trance producers Chariot their first hit.

 

12 NE 01 Tungevaag ~ Young Summer

Another BJSC entry, it gives Tungevaag his 2nd hit after having been part of the lineup for 'Play', a #4 hit with K-391, Alan Walker and Mangoo.

 

23 NE 01 Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix ~ Heartbreak Anthem

Marking the long awaited return of Galantis to making a great song again, it is their first top 40 hit of the decade, and their 8th in all. It also marks the first appearance of Little Mix for the decade, with what is now their 8th top 40 hit. It is David Guetta's 3rd hit of the year, following features on 'Big' [#26] and 'Bed' [#4].

 

24 NE 01 Hard Feelings ~ Holding On Too Long

The debut hit of Hard Feelings following their BJSC appearance, whose members include Joe Goddard who had two previous minor top 40 hits.

 

25 NE 01 Stockholm Noir ~ Boy Like A Girl (feat. Ofelia)

The first hit for Stockholm Noir following their BJSC appearance.

 

26 NE 01 Omnia ~ Beautiful

The 4th hit for trance producer Omnia, excluding his work as part of Futurecode.

 

32 NE 01 Sewerslvt ~ Jvnko Still Loves You

The first hit for Sewerslvt following their BJSC appearance.

 

33 NE 01 Ave Air ~ The Music Box

The first hit for composer Ave Air, this is actually only here as the song came up from shuffling a random piano instrumentals playlist.

 

34 NE 01 Barbara Pravi ~ Voilà

The French Eurovision entry having finished 2nd in the contest and also is the 2nd highest in this chart. It is her first hit.

 

35 RE 06 Apache 207 ~ Roller

Originally a minor hit (#49 peak) last year, the German rapper returns and in the top 40 having featured in BJSC.

 

37 NE 01 Kungs ~ Never Going Home

An unexpected comeback for Kungs, who had two hits in 2016, including one of the biggest hits in this chart's history in 'This Girl', and hadn't been seen since.

 

38 NE 01 Måneskin ~ Zitti E Buoni

The Eurovision winning entry and first chart hit from the Italian band, marking the first rock song to enter the top 40 this decade.

 

39 NE 01 The Roop ~ Discoteque

The Lithuanian Eurovision entry, and the return of the group to the chart after last year's provisional entry of theirs 'On Fire' reached #33.

 

40 NE 01 Blind Channel ~ Dark Side

The Finnish Eurovision entry and their first chart hit.

I missed the Eurovision performances because I was working but caught up the results so I've not even heard half the songs. I did listen to Shun yesterday though and it's a bop. :music:

Sky Wheel is fantastic. Very nice starting point on your chart for that one.

Heartbreak Anthem is a great title for this track. Great stuff. Top 10 officially as well but I wonder if it can climb from there.

Lots of Eurovision here! I quite enjoyed SHUM although I have to say I still prefer Solovey, other favourites from your picks are 10 Years, Mata Hari and Discotheque. Great to see I Do This All The Time enter from BJSC (my +18!) plus Boy Like a Girl and Young Summer, and I'm quite enjoying Heartbreak Anthem as well, a real return to form from Galantis!

It's another great piece from Worakls, another I'd have considered for BJSC if I hadn't already sent and won with "Storm".

Haven't heard that Love Tonight remix, the original is really great anyhow.

"Sky Wheel" may well be my fave BJSC discovery of the year, what a find.

I'm enjoying Hearbreak Anthem a fair bit, the drop is great for a dancepop track I think too.

Well the run for SLY had to come to an end sometime but it will likely make a very high feature in my end of year chart. I'm now looking forward to hearing their new release this Friday, could be a tough chart battle between them and Calvin Harris if they both deliver.

I missed the Eurovision performances because I was working but caught up the results so I've not even heard half the songs. I did listen to Shun yesterday though and it's a bop. :music:

Sky Wheel is fantastic. Very nice starting point on your chart for that one.

Heartbreak Anthem is a great title for this track. Great stuff. Top 10 officially as well but I wonder if it can climb from there.

I'm really hoping close can reverse it's falls here. Oh my god, the production on this is superb.

Shum is easily the best thing sent to Eurovision in many years, for me. Very pleased with the result it got too.

I think Heartbreak Anthem could very well climb a bit in my chart, perhaps a future top ten.

Lots of Eurovision here! I quite enjoyed SHUM although I have to say I still prefer Solovey, other favourites from your picks are 10 Years, Mata Hari and Discotheque. Great to see I Do This All The Time enter from BJSC (my +18!) plus Boy Like a Girl and Young Summer, and I'm quite enjoying Heartbreak Anthem as well, a real return to form from Galantis!

We'll have to see how long Eurovision will last, most of the time the tracks drop out quickly, though Shum will likely have a bit more of an extended run.

Heartbreak Anthem is very much as you say, I hadn't been fond of Galantis' output in recent times.

Loving the BJSC and Eurovision invasions! Stockholm Noir was another great winner for FARC <3 and my favourite of those you charted would have to be Sewerslvt, my silver medal, a massive improvement from the last entry by them! Love that Go_A have charted as high as #2 here *.* it certainly was a massive standout! I initially wasn't sure about the vocals but by the end I was sold on how whacky it was :lol: here for Måneskin being here of course, what an anthem <3

 

Otherwise it's great to see 'Heartbreak Anthem' here - my favourite Galantis song in about 6 years, what a return to form!

Go_A was a huge standout! Didn't expect a song like that at Eurovision but it clearly went down well with the voting public.

It's certainly the best Galantis song in many years, they've been various shades of disappointing in recent times.

yep, BJSC has that effect to propel a song back in, although it'll probably fall fairly quickly now.

Yes! With that much of an Avicii vibe it was always going to appeal to me a lot, it was very unlucky to not get my +18 just because the Aeroche entry was truly outstanding.
