I'll die living just as free as my hair

| 07 // Hair // 8.57

In 7th place we have the promotional single Hair! One of Gaga's favourite songs on the album, it features Clarence Clemons on sax. It is an uplifting banger about self-empowerment and owning your identity; her hair is her freedom and in the song, Gaga embraces this liberated self through expressing herself. As a child, it was the only thing Gaga could change about herself, and so the song acts as a message to her younger fans too, encouraging them to enact their true selves. Gaga performed the song live on a few TV shows and it helped to spread the message of the album through its empowering nature.

LOVE this one! Not sure it should have beat the two singles that have just dropped out before it, but can't begrudge its joyous, empowering nature! Shocked it's done as well as it has actually :o

Judas is the demon I cling to

| 06 // Judas // 8.73

The second single from the album is out now. A song about falling in love with the wrong guy (but with a biblical twist), it's a rip-roaring cacaphony. The song is a fierce dance song that doesn't once let up throughout its duration and it seems to divide the fandom with many hailing it as one of her greatest, while others dismiss it and consider it to be one of the album's weakest moments. Still, whatever you think of the song, it gets people talking - the song sparked outrage as it was released close to Holy week and the video has biblical references throughout. You guys love it enough to send it very close to the top 5 on the album despite this controversy!

Is that four albums tracks in the top 5?!!! What a demonstration of how much more this was than just the singles *.*

I'll make you squeal baby

Kicking off the top 5 we have this political party anthem! A hard-hitting club track and one of Gaga's favourite songs on the album (and DJWS's favourite), it's insanely playful and dirty. Snippets of the song were premiered at the Anatomy of Change Fashion Show by Thierry Mugler in Paris. The song explores themes of female sexual empowerment, through a metaphor of John F. Kennedy's alleged affair with Marilyn Monroe.

I'll tell them my religion's you

| 04 // Bloody Mary // 9.13

Next out it's the spooky, atmospheric Bloody Mary! It's the first song here to receive a very impressive 9+ average and is described as a rave ballad sung from the perspective of Mary Magdalene. The metaphor of Mary here signifies someone who is both divine but also human, and Gaga relates this to women in modern day who are supposed to be superstars but also real at the same time. It's a song that blurs reality and fantasy and was also the name of Gaga's car - who knew!?
