June 29, 20214 yr Impressed with England tonight! Most attacking they've looked so far and against the strongest team yet is commendable! Plus a big historic result for the record books! Feels like the Worlds where we got through against Colombia in the Round of 16 to an easier team in the quarter final, possibly Sweden again?
June 29, 20214 yr I'll go for an England - Italy/Belgium final. Edited June 29, 20214 yr by common sense
June 29, 20214 yr England were certainly better in the second half when they committed more players forward and it was great to see Wembley half full and making lots of noise.
June 29, 20214 yr This morning it had been 55 years since England won a tournament knockout game against Germany. It's now just over half an hour. The first time in my life and it feels weirdly important. I echo this. So many times Ive watched England being knocked out of major tournaments by Germany. Like Southgate said they have to make it count on Saturday and not throw it away by losing.

Same here, I missed 1970 as I wasn't yet born but '90, '96 and '10 are seared in to my memory, especially the first two. Today was more than important, for us old gits, it was cathartic. Which brings me to a question for those who aren't old enough to have first hand experience of the games up to, let's say Euro '96 - how do you see the rivalry? It feels a bit like today's team didn't struggle with the weight of history, aware of course but it's not a burden on their minds. How do those under 30 feel about it?

It's been said many times that England - Germany is just another match for Germans. It's only the English who build it up to be such a big deal. I love Germany and am well over 30. That, of course, doesn't mean I don't support England when we come up against the Germans.
June 29, 20214 yr At some point people might recognise Southgate knows what he's doing, superb performance. After the first 15 minutes really thwarted Germany, creating few chances but they're good ones and that can be all you need with the quality up front. Shaw immense, Trippier not far behind. Yes, there's a reason why Southgate got the job ahead of some random bloke (or blokess) on Twitter

That, of course, doesn't mean I don't support England when we come up against the Germans. I'm with you there on both counts. West Germany were always my second favourite team and then Germany were by default. There wasn't that much of a deal about it here until 1990 and '96 made it huge because it was becoming a habit. Those who are younger won't remember that first hand and is why I wonder if it resonates as much to the younger members on here.

I'm not in the under 30 bracket but I have never seen Germany as particular rivals - although 96 was the first tournament I ever followed. I find it quite cringe that Germany are referred to as rivals as it feels like an excuse for out of date war references under a sporting guise and everyone should have moved on a long time ago.
June 29, 20214 yr Why did Sterling do an interview with Apple earphones in Rice did too. I took it to be so that they could hear the interviewer's question over the crowd noise through a feed
June 29, 20214 yr Nothing in club football can compare to the euphoria of beating your rivals in an international tournament. I'm absolutely buzzing. COME ON ENGLAND!!! Agreed, international football is far better, prob just because the important moments only come every other year!
June 29, 20214 yr Germany's performance was pretty poor in that match tbh, they had very few chances. England played well and deserved to win. Edited June 29, 20214 yr by sn👠ke
June 29, 20214 yr I honestly hope Sweden and Ukraine knock yall out, Rooney is absolutely unbearable right now (off the site). If it does indeed “come home” then rip my sanity

June 29, 20214 yr Rice did too. I took it to be so that they could hear the interviewer's question over the crowd noise through a feed It’s because interviews have to be socially distanced and with the crowd there now it’s hard for players to hear those questions from a distance.
