Posted July 20, 20213 yr Hi all! This thread is the thread for covering Miscellaneous Sports at the Olympics this year. This includes the following sports: Archery, Fencing, Field Hockey, Modern Pentathlon, Shooting, Skateboarding, Sport Climbing, Weightlifting. Feel free to discuss all the ins and outs of the sports, any predictions you may have, support for the athletes and anything else you notice as we kick off on Friday!
July 21, 20213 yr Author World Number 1 in shooting had to pull out due to COIVD. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/57917553 Hope she is well.
July 26, 20213 yr Did anyone see the Skateboarding section of the highlights show yesterday and think it... made a bit of a mockery of it? It was good to see them spotlight it but they didn't seem to be taking it very seriously with the way Nihal was covering it. Looked like a decent competition anyway!
July 26, 20213 yr I've seen bits of it more than many other sports, I think people are delighting in the novelty. Especially since that 13-year old girl won gold for Japan, I can't imagine being that cool - host nation's doing well on the medal table (the least they deserve) :D
July 26, 20213 yr Hong Kong won their second ever gold medal at Summer Olympics as Cheung Ka Long beat Daniele Garozzo at the men's foil individual event by 15-11. What a moment for Hong Kong! https://hongkongfp.com/2021/07/26/breaking-...tokyo-olympics/ Edited July 26, 20213 yr by uhsting
July 26, 20213 yr That's good to see! Always good to see the less-successful countries get their moment in the spotlight.
July 26, 20213 yr The Philippines also got their first Olympic Gold ever today with Hidilyn Diaz in the weightlifting!
July 27, 20213 yr I like watching the Taekwando. The rules seem a bit complex though, even after reading Wiki, with the coaches able to challenge some decisions. Edited July 27, 20213 yr by common sense
July 27, 20213 yr Author Al-Rashidi from Kuwait won his second bronze medal in skeet shooting at the age of 58!!
July 27, 20213 yr The Philippines also got their first Olympic Gold ever today with Hidilyn Diaz in the weightlifting! I will tell the wife and she will be pleased. They entered 29 athletes apparently.
July 29, 20213 yr Another country picking up their first Olympic medal ever as San Marino won a bronze in the women's trap shooting! First Flo Rida and now this, what a year for San Marino x (this also makes them the least populous country to ever win an Olympic medal - I was surprised to learn their population is even smaller than Bermuda's! Though Bermuda retain their record for least populous to win a gold medal). GB also picking up a shooting bronze from the men's trap event.
July 29, 20213 yr Didn't even know we had an athlete in the shotting so well done to Matthew John Coward-Holley and all his various names ;)
August 2, 20213 yr A silver medal for Emily Campbell in the weightlifting. It's the first GB medal in the sport since 1984 and the first ever for a female weightlifter. The Chinese woman who won the gold was in another league.
August 2, 20213 yr Author It will be a repeat of Rio as Great Britain play Netherlands in the semi-final.
August 2, 20213 yr Having a shootout like that is more interesting to watch than just taking the penalty from the spot. The goalkeepers are much more involved.
August 2, 20213 yr Well done to Emily Campbell! First British female weightlifter to get a medal is some achievement. Laurel Hubbard ended up way outside the medals then, you do wonder whether all the debate going on around her affected her in some way.
August 3, 20213 yr I did know that weightlifting was not exactly historically a strength (no pun intended) for GB but didn't quite realise just how poor our record in it is - this being our first medal since 1984 and our first silver since 1964, with our one gold medal in the entire history of the Olympics being in 1896 (!) Fantastic achievement for Emily. And nice to know that the gold was comprehensively never in play with Li Wenwen's first attempts being enough for a gold medal, even before she went on to better them with both her second and third attempts  has to be one of the least competitive golds of the entire games.
August 4, 20213 yr Well done to Sky Brown for the bronze in the skateboarding! I thought the sounded a bit American, turns out she's half-Japanese so technically that was a Japanese sweep of the podium in that contest :kink:
