Does anyone listen to the Massive 40? It's a Sunday chart show played mostly on community radio stations, presented by Jason Scott. It's been going for about a decade now, under various names.

They make the dubious claim that they are "the chart to trust" (to me, it looks suspiciously close to the iTunes chart at around 9pm on a Friday night!)

But if you don't mind that the chart is even less meaningful than the Big Top 40, it's actually a good listen. It's got a cutely retro feel and sounds like a proper chart show.

It's also quite fun to hear some of the proper random songs that make the lower end of the chart. Sam Bailey and Matt Goss sneaked in the other week haha. I've discovered a few gems from it actually, like The War On Drugs track in this week's chart. It's kind of like listening to the official chart cerca 2004 before they included downloads.

Here's this week's chart:

1 1 = Elton John feat. Dua Lipa Cold Heart

2 3 +1 Ed Sheeran Shivers

3 2 -1 Ed Sheeran Bad Habits

4 NEW Taylor Swift Wildest Dreams (Taylor's Version)

5 7 +2 Joel Corry & Jax Jones Feat. Charli XCX & Saweetie OUT OUT

6 18 +12 David Guetta, MistaJam & John Newman If You Really Love Me (How Will I Know

7 14 +7 Becky Hill & Topic My Heart Goes (La Di Da)

8 NEW Bring Me The Horizon DiE4u

9 21 +12 Dermot Kennedy Better Days

10 10 = Jonasu Black Magic

11 13 +2 Radio Rain & DJ Craig Gorman Talk About

12 11 -1 The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber Stay

13 5 -8 Ed Sheeran Visiting Hours

14 16 +2 The Weeknd Take My Breath

15 8 -7 Abba Don't Shut Me Down

16 29 +13 Ella Henderson, House Gospel Choir & Just Kiddin Risk It All

17 9 -8 Abba I Still Have Faith In You

18 25 +7 Anne Marie & Little Mix Kiss My (Uh Oh)

19 28 +9 Clean Bandit & Topic Feat. Wes Nelson Drive

20 34 +14 Glass Animals Heat Waves

21 NEW Ewan McVicar Tell Me Something Good

22 NEW Placebo Beautiful James

23 22 -1 Tones And I Fly Away

24 24 = BURNS Talamanca

25 NEW Lil Nas X That's What I Want

26 23 -3 Becky Hill & David Guetta Remember

27 NEW Luke La Volpe Alter Ego

28 26 -2 Marshmello & Jonas Brothers Leave Before You Love Me

29 12 -17 Rag'n'Bone Man Alone

30 38 +8 Olivia Rodrigo Good 4 U

31 NEW Shawn Mendes & Tainy Summer Of Love

32 NEW Liam Payne Sunshine

33 NEW Griff One Night

34 NEW The War On Drugs I Don't Live Here Anymore

35 33 -2 Calvin Harris Feat. Tom Grennan By Your Side

36 15 -21 JLS Eternal Love

37 NEW Sabaton Feat. Tina Guo Have Mercy

38 32 -6 Galantis, David Guetta & Little Mix Heartbreak Anthem

39 NEW Jonas Brothers Who's In Your Head

40 NEW Central Cee Obsessed With You

Obviously it's complete nonsense as a chart, but it's kind of how I wish the chart was - more varied, faster moving, and more pop-leaning.

Anyway, give it a go on Sunday - I listen via http://www.hiveradiouk.com

Does anyone listen to any of the other alternative chart shows? I believe Hits Radio have one of their own now for instance, as the Big Top 40 is exclusive to Capital and Heart now. Think there are some others?

I couldn’t listen to anything like that without getting annoyed that something that isn’t a proper chart (and doesn’t even define its terms) is being presented as a chart. Sure the above list of songs may match my personal taste better than the official chart, but I can listen to all those tracks in my own time anyway. Sure the Radio 1 show is banal. Sure the presenters obviously don’t care too much about the chart and report “facts” that aren’t true and make weird decisions about what to skip. But at least it’s the actual chart.

Sorry that’s of no help to you whatsoever! B-)

Massive top 40 and big top 40 than Sunday get bit confused.

I just listen to chart show update radio 1 on Sunday

Before I got to properly understand how the chart works, I used to listen to a chart show every Sunday that was on my local radio, and I just assumed it was accurate (which I now know it’s not). I just wonder to myself how all these other charts that aren’t the radio 1 official chart actually get their information from to make up the chart? I sometimes even wonder if it’s made up in a way.
The Big Top 40 occasionally gets a listen from me, it at least feels less like it's made up at the drop of the hat.
Basically what Julian says - that's a great chart and I would love the official chart to look more like that but I'm not bothered about listening to a rundown of it as I have my own playlists for the songs I like. You're right though, it does have a very cute, retro feel to it and I wish the official chart was as varied as that!

The Big Top 40 is based on data from iTunes and Apple Music, plus radio airplay (probably from Capital & Heart only now), though quite heavily weighted towards downloads. The old Hit40UK/Pepsi Network Chart before that used OCC/CIN data, with the top 10 being pure sales.

I suspect some of the other ones aren't as scientific.

Don't you guys ever just listen to the radio just for a change though?

Plus perhaps it's an age/nostalgia thing for me.. it's quite nice to listen to an old-fashioned chart show on a Sunday afternoon like the ones I listened to as a kid.

I do love a good chart show - I’ve listened to some great ones recently from the 90s and early 2000s that have been linked on here. I think I’m just too much of a geek to enjoy it if I don’t believe the chart is accurate! ;) But maybe I’ll give this one a listen sometime.

I used to listen to big top 40 but haven't for a while, alot of the stuff in the charts now don't cover my music tastes. There just isn't the variety of genres there used to be in the mid 00s.
