Yet another national selection kicking off pre-2022!

Eesti Laul is set to commence at the end of November and culminate in the Grand Final on February 12. Songs are being accepted from today until October 20.

The dates of the selection shows are as follows:

November 20 – Quarterfinal 1

November 27 – Quarterfinal 2

December 4 – Quarterfinal 3

December 11 – Quarterfinal 4

February 3 – Semi-Final One

February 5 – Semi-Final Two

February 12 – Grand Final

Up to 40 songs will be selected to compete in Eesti Laul 2022 with a jury listening blindly to all the submissions. An equal number of Estonian language and English/multilingual songs will be chosen to compete in the shows. The Quaterfinalists will be announced no later than October 27.

In the quarterfinals five songs from each show will be chosen to progress to the semi-finals. Three songs will be chosen by the public and two by a jury. In the semi-finals five songs will be chosen for the final from each show, both the semi-finals have two rounds: winners of the first round are decided by the jury vote and TV viewers’ phone votes, and winners of the second round are decided by the viewers’ phone votes.

In the Grand Final the show will have two rounds of voting. The first round will determine the acts in the Super Final and are determined by 50% jury voting and 50% public vote. In the Super Final the Estonian representative is chosen by 100% televoting.

Songs that qualified from QF 1:

2 Jaagup Tuisk "Kui vaid"

6 Stig Rästa "Interstellar"

7 Maian "Meeletu"

9 Boamadu "Mitte kauaks"

10 Evelin Samuel "Waterfall"

My personal ranking:

1. Meeletu 8/10

2. Kaua veel 7.5/10

3. Koos lõpuni 7/10

4. Interstellar 6/10

5. Kui vaid 6/10

6. Everytime 5/10

7. Waterfall 5/10

8. Feel Like This 5/10

9. Mitte kauaks 4/10

10. Hea päev 4/10

Kaua veel should have qualified me thinks. Interstellar is bland by Stig's standard sadly. The only song I liked in Eesti Laul in 2020 is Beautiful Lie (I recall I liked one more but I can't remember which), so apparently the standard stepped up this year. Mitte kauaks is really a big dropoff from Dark Side and Zitti e buoni so I don't think this will bring Estonia qualification.

I really like Waterfall too, lovely to see Evelin again too after so long!

I like Waterful but what would take away the achievement of it in Turin is that the backing vocals would, of course, be recorded.

I have still not come to terms with the frustrating decision on recorded backing vocals being used. <_<

All of tonight's entries are going to be in Estonian, the first for an Estonian NF since 1998.

From what got into the next round tonight, this is a semi decent bop

and I really like this big ballad that the Jury put through

I don't think I've had any wow moments from the first two heats but it's still early days.

Songs that qualified from QF 2:

4 Kaia-Liisa Kesler "Vaikus"

5 Helen "Vaata minu poole"

6 Jyrise "Plaksuta"

8 Andrei Zevakin feat. Grete Paia "Mis nüüd saab"

10 Triin Niitoja and Frants Tikerpuu "Laululind"

My personal ranking:

1. Vaata minu poole 7/10

2. Siiani 7/10

3. Laululind 6/10

4. Elu rüpes 6/10

5. Vaikus 6/10

6. Lõpuks muutub 5/10

7. Kuradile 4/10

8. Mis nüüd saab 4/10

9. Plaksuta 3/10

10. Vahel lihtsalt 2/10

Not two of the worst songs of the qf go through... Overall QF 2 is weaker than QF 1. Siiani is absolutely robbed and I'm baffled the jury find Plaksuta better Siiani like what?

Anna Sahlene made it through the quarter finals with this big "was written with Destiny in mind" inspirational number

Along with the other highlight from STEFAN with a "Avicci Country" style number

Songs that qualified from QF 3:

1 Stefan "Hope"

4 Elina Nechayeva "Remedy"

7 Merilin Mälk "Little Girl"

8 Anna Sahlene "Champion"

9 Alabama Watchdog "Move On"

My QF 3 rankings:

1. Champion (9/10)

2. Hope (7.5/10)

3. Little Girl (6/10)

4. Let's Talk About (6/10)

5. Move On (6/10)

6. Remedy (5/10)

7. Music Saved My Soul (5/10)

8. Three Days Ago (5/10)

9. Under Water (4/10)

10. Take Me Home (3/10)

Remedy is no La Forza and quite disappointing considering the song is far from utilising Elina's vocal capability, except some parts in the end which is woefully inadequate. Hope sounds like by far the strongest song in the selection (or maybe not) and definitely appears to be a favourite, but Champion comes close. Let's Talk About has lots of potential with the styling which probably would be perfect with a much more melodic and harmonic chorus, but sad this is out :( All in all, this is definitely the strongest QF for me so far.

EDIT: Champion grew on me a lot after a few listens but it could sound dated for some.

Estonian Raylee made it through tonight *.*

And this camp bop from Black Velvet is another highlight

Songs that qualified from QF 4:

1 Púr Múdd and Shira "Golden Shores"

2 Elysa "Fire"

3 Minimal Wind feat. Elisabeth Tiffany "What to Make of This"

6 Ott Lepland "Aovalguses"

10 Black Velvet "Sandra"

My QF 4 rankings:

1. Fire 7/10

2. Golden Shores 6/10

3. Aovalguses 6/10

4. Tunnete keel 6/10

5. Quicksilver 5/10

6. Sandra 5/10

7. What to Make of This 5/10

8. Shouldn't Be Friends 5/10

9. Tule minu sisse 4/10

10. My Mom 4/10

Overall ranking: 5.425/10

Top 5 ranking: 7.8/10

This turns out to be a bang average QF for me. Fire is the best song here but the chorus is lacking something, probably because of long-held notes, so this song doesn't sound like it will definitely win the selection. This QF probably feels like the QF that I'm fine with whatever song qualifies. All in all, QF 2 is the weakest for me.

Hope is a bit generic but does have a special sound and is very radio-friendly so definitely will do better than last year
