Enya, birth name Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin (sometimes presented in the media as the Anglicised Enya Brennan; born 17 May 1961), is the Republic of Ireland's best-selling solo artist and one of Ireland's best known musicians. As a musical group, Enya is a collaboration between three people: Enya herself, who composes and performs the music; Nicky Ryan, who produces the albums, and Roma Ryan, who writes the lyrics in various languages. Enya is an approximate transcription of how Eithne is pronounced in her native Gaelic. Enya is one of the biggest selling female artists in history, and was the world's biggest selling female artist of 2001 and 2002. She has been unofficially ranked as the 12th biggest-selling female artist in the world in 2006.

Today's Artist is: Will Young

William Robert Young (born January 20, 1979) is an English singer and actor. He catapulted to fame in 2002 after winning the inaugural UK Pop Idol contest, and continues to sustain a successful music career.

In February 2002 Young came to national prominence by winning the ITV television programme contest Pop Idol. Contrary to popular belief, Will did not come from behind to win the contest. After having beaten the widely-accepted frontrunner Gareth Gates in the final show, it emerged that he had in fact gained the most votes in six out of the nine weeks of the live show.

Young's first single was a double A-side featuring Westlife's song "Evergreen" and "Anything Is Possible", a new song written for the winner of the show by Cathy Dennis. In March 2002 this became the fastest-selling debut in UK chart history, selling 403,027 copies on its day of release (1,108,659 copies in its first week). It went on to sell over 1.7 million copies, and in the official list of the all-time best-selling singles in the UK issued later that year it was 11th.

Young subsequently revealed that he was gay, in order to pre-empt a tabloid newspaper that was preparing to run a story 'outing' him as gay. He also stated that he had never hidden and was comfortable with his sexuality.

He went on to win the Brits "Best Breakthrough Act", and a plethora of other awards.

Early singles of note, taken from his debut From Now On include "Light My Fire"(in José Feliciano style) and the double A-side (and official Children In Need single of 2003) "You and I"/"Don't Let Me Down".

Taken from his second album, "Friday's Child" was first the hugely successful "Leave Right Now", for which the writer Eg White scooped an Ivor Novello songwriting award. The second and third singles were "Your Game" and "Friday's Child" respectively. This second album is often deemed to be Young's most successful, selling over 1.6 million copies (5x platinum) and containing several tracks co-written by him, the album received a great many accolades and much critical acclaim.

His second Brit, in February 2005, was awarded for the single "Your Game" (co-written by Young and Blair MacKichan). Following sellout theatre and arena tours in 2004, he toured again at outside festival venues in summer 2005. On July 6, 2005, he performed at Edinburgh 50,000 - The Final Push, the final concert of Live 8, a charity concert in Edinburgh to raise awareness for the plight of Africa, where he performed a duet with James Brown singing "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag".

Later in the year, Young met comedian David Walliams and the pair became good friends, with Young appearing at the Little Britain live stage show in Manchester, and later recording a podcast with Walliams, in which they chatted about various aspects of Young's career. The four parts are available on his website and iTunes.

His third album, Keep On, was released in November 2005, along with a revamped website, together with the first single from the same, "Switch It On", which confounded much expectation of the singer as it strayed from the predictable successful ballad formula. He released a second single in the form of "All Time Love" which was very well received, reaching no. 3 in the sales charts and achieving Young's highest ever airplay. A third single "Who Am I" was released in April 2006, accompanied by an innovative video based on old episodes of Blue Peter, whereby Young was superimposed into scenes from decades past.

On 1 May 2006, Young was voted the UK's favourite artist 'ever' in a poll conducted by commercial radio, beating the likes of Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney and the Spice Girls.[1]

On 20 May 2006, he sang "Who Am I", "Leave Right Now" and "Love the One You're With" at the Prince's Trust 30th Birthday.

From 12 September until 2 October 2006, Young toured the UK with his "Keep On Live" tour, which included the songs taken from his album Keep On and a selection of past songs. The official merchandise range for the tour, highlighted by the press included a "tip and strip" pen, which when turned over, reveals Will Young in his underpants.

Today's Artist Is.....

Eminem

Eminem or Slim Shady, is a Grammy and Academy Award-winning American rapper, record producer and occasional actor. Eminem remains one of the most known and best selling rap stars ever.Having sold over 70 million albums worldwide Marshall Mathers is the best selling music artist of the 21st

Eminem is noted for his ability to change his vocal pace and style multiple times within one song without losing the beat, and has been praised for his skill in alliteration and assonance; Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney has praised Mathers for his "verbal energy" and for arousing popular interest in poetry and lyrics.. In 2003 Eminem was also named the second most powerful celebrity on the planet. Mathers is also infamous for the controversy surrounding many of his lyrics. With the enormous success of his highly acclaimed album The Marshall Mathers LP and its subsequent nomination for four Grammy awards including Album of the Year, critics such as GLAAD denounced his lyrics as homophobic and misogynist, while others protested that it promoted violence.

The most recent release from Aftermath was a greatest hits album from Eminem called Curtain Call: The Hits in 2005, a compilation covering many of his previous commercial hit songs, in addition to three new tracks. Mathers has stated that he is taking a break from solo work, but continues to produce and collaborate with fellow Aftermath artists as well as G-Unit artists and rappers under his Shady Records label.

At Aftermath/Interscope, Mathers released The Slim Shady LP, which went on to be one of the most popular albums of 1999, going triple platinum by the end of the year. It moved nearly 1.5 million units in its opening week. With the album's enormous popularity came controversy surrounding many of the album's lyrics. In "'97 Bonnie and Clyde", he describes a trip with his infant daughter, disposing of the body of his wife. Another song, "Guilty Conscience," ends with him encouraging a man to murder his wife and her lover. "Guilty Conscience" also marked the beginning of the powerful friendship and musical bond that Dr. Dre and Eminem would share. The two label-mates would later collaborate on a line of hit songs, including "Forgot About Dre" and "What's The Difference" from Dr. Dre's highly acclaimed album 2001.

The Marshall Mathers LP was released in May 2000, quickly selling two million copies. It was the fastest selling rap album of all time. The first single released from the album, the hit: The Real Slim Shady, was a huge hit, thanks in part to the catchy rhythm and chorus line, "Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?" (adapted from the catch phrase of the TV quiz show To Tell the Truth). It also created some buzz by insulting celebrities and making dubious claims about them; he implies, among other things, that Christina Aguilera performed oral sex on Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit) and Carson Daly (of MTV's Total Request Live). "The Real Slim Shady" is widely considered to be Eminem's "signature" and best commercial single. In his second single, "The Way I Am," he reveals to his fans the pressures from his record company to top "My Name Is" and sell more records, and dismisses the alleged controversial link between music such as that of Marilyn Manson and shootings such as Columbine High School as absurd, instead blaming the parents. In the third single, "Stan" (which samples Dido's "Thank you"), Eminem attempts to deal with his new-found fame, taking on the perspective of a deranged fan who kills himself and his pregnant girlfriend, mirroring "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" on The Slim Shady LP. To this date, "The Marshall Mathers LP" is widely considered to be Eminem's greatest achievement, and a hip-hop classic.

Mathers' third major album, The Eminem Show, was released in summer 2002 and proved to be another smash hit for the rapper shooting to number one on the charts and selling well over 1 million copies in its first week of release. It featured the single "Without Me", an apparent sequel to "The Real Slim Shady", in which he makes derogatory comments about boy bands, Limp Bizkit, Moby, and Lynne Cheney, among others. The album reflected on the impact of his rise to fame, his relationship with his wife and daughter, and his status in the hip-hop community. He also addresses the charges he faced over assaulting a bouncer he saw kissing his wife in 2000. While there is clear anger present on several tracks, this album was considerably less inflammatory than the previous, and as such did not face any protests of misogyny and homophobia that had plagued The Marshall Mathers LP.

2004 saw the release of Mathers' fourth major album, Encore. The album was another chart-topper for the rapper, driven by the formulaic single "Just Lose It", notable for its lampooning of Michael Jackson. Despite the comedic theme of the lead single, Encore also had its fair share of serious subject matter, including the poignant anti-war track "Mosh". By the end of 2005 Mathers was back with a new single, "When I'm Gone", recorded for the greatest-hits set Curtain Call: The Hits.

Queen

Queen are an English rock band formed by Brian May, Freddie Mercury, and Roger Taylor in London, England in 1970 from the remains of Smile, with John Deacon completing the lineup the following year. Britain's most successful band of the past three decades, the band became popular during the mid-to-late 1970s and still retain an extremely large international fan base.

Although initially dismissed by the majority of music critics, especially those in the United States, Queen have more recently been recognized as having made significant contributions to such genres as arena rock, glam rock,m hard rock, heavy metal, pop rock, and progressive rock, amongst others.

Their first chart entry was the 1974 single "Seven Seas of Rhye." More notable was "Killer Queen" from their third album Sheer Heart Attack, which climbed to #2 on the charts. Their greatest success came in 1975 with "Bohemian Rhapsody", a single from A Night at the Opera. In United Kingdom, it spent nine weeks at #1, and was also a worldwide hit. For the next sixteen years, Queen remained active, producing numerous other hits such as "We Will Rock You", "We Are the Champions", "Another One Bites the Dust", and "Radio Ga Ga." In the 1980s, their popularity waned in North America, though they continued to be a successful act in other parts of the world.

As of 2005, according to The Guinness Book of World Records, Queen albums have spent a total of 1,422 weeks or 27 years on the UK album charts; more time than any other musical act including The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

Today's artist is:

ANASTACIA

Anastacia Lyn Newkirk (born September 17th, 1973) is a American Pop Singer, Dancer, Producer & Songwriter and has sold 24 million records since her first release in 2000. She has became the biggest selling female artist in europe of the 21st Century! She is noted for her powerfull, deep & distinctive voice. She is also famous for her trademark tinted glasses and also becomming an inspiration to woman worldwide in 2003 after beating her battle with breast cancer.

Bursting into the scence in 2000 with her worlwide classic, Im Outta Love, Anastacia was competly different to who was in the charts at the time. She is often described as having a black voice inside a white persons body or 'The Little Lady with the BIG voice' as she is only 5'1". Her debut album, Not that Kind, which consisted of Pop, Dance & Soul sold an impressive 4 million in Europe and 5 million worlwide, despite not making in Impact in her Home Country.

After the sucess of Not that Kind, Anastacia released her 2nd studio album, Freak of Nature, which sold 7 million worlwide. Freak of Nature showed a new light to Anastacia, the songs where more up-to-date, funkier, more powerfull and showed a new style/image of Anastacia, especially that awsome 6-Pack! At the end of 2002 Anastacia was ready to record her 3rd studio album. Everything was brought to a stop when the world found out that Anastacia was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

Anastacia was told that she was diaognised with the killing diese on Febuary, 2003. Anastacia had big plans ahead of her at this point, she had a new song and video to shoot, a duet with Mariah Carey to do, but all was brought to a stop. She went in for the 8 hour long operation, with over 40% removed from her breast. 4 days after her operation Anastacia went into the studio and recorded a song for the chicago soundtrack, Love Is A Crime. The next day she went in for the video shoot. She said that during the video shoot there was a bucket next to the stage for everytime she threw up after each take, also during the shooting of the video, she was suffering from a 40 Degree's fever, despite this she was still able to dance about and look stunning!

Throughout her treatment, radiation and thearopy, Anastacia began writing her 3rd album and finished recording at the end of 2003 in time for a release for 2004. She wrote all her songs during this time, but only two songs on the album where about the experiance of cancer, one of which was released with all proceeds going to her breast cancer fund. The album was released in March, 2004, selling 8 million worlwide. The single, Left Outside Alone, is one of her biggest singles to date. The song was written about her father who left her at a younge age, and sadly passed away last year. Anastacia also mentioned that at the begining of the song, the Amy Lee style vocals that open the song up is what she sounded like during her cancer treatment and after getting her voice back, she still wanted a bit of the cancer experiance added to the song.

Bit of history - Before signing to Sony, Anastacia apeared on the cut. Although she never won it, her performance rolled in phone calls from the likes of Michael Jackson & Elton John, and also recieving phone calls from EVERY record company asking to sign her up. After a long talk with Jackson, she signed up to his parter company. Before releasing Im Outta Love, Anastacia spent 6 months batteling with the company as they forced her to change her voice, change her style, ditch the growl and the glasses, Anastacia refused and was aloud to release what she wanted her way, and thank god she did!

Todays Artist Is:

Shakira

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (born February 2, 1977), known simply as Shakira, is a two-time Grammy Award and eight-time Latin Grammy Award-winning Colombian singer-songwriter, musician and record producer who has been a major figure in the pop music of Latin America since the mid-1990s. After her exposure to the English market, Shakira has arguably become most influential Latin American female musicians of all time. Shakira has the honor of being the highest selling Colombian artist of all time and the only artist from that country to have had a #1 single in the USA.

Shakira is best known for mixing different sound styles in her songs and albums, for her critically acclaimed lyrics and for her dancing style which primarily features belly dancing. Noted for her aggressive, rock-influenced approach, Shakira maintained an extraordinary degree of creative control over her music, especially for a female artist; she wrote or co-wrote nearly all of her own material, and in the process gained a reputation as one of Latin music's most ambitiously poetic lyricists.

Although her first 2 albums ‘Magia’ & ‘Peligro’ brought her very little success, her third album ‘Pies Descalzos’ which took an Alanis Morrisette approach, sold over 5 million worldwide. It included the huge single ‘Estoy Aqui’ and other notable hits such as ‘Pies Descalzos Suenos Blancos’ & ‘Donde Estas Corazon?’ After a remix album [which sold 1 million copies], Shakira began writing for her upcoming album, but the lyrics were unfortunately stolen in her suitcase and were never found. Never to be the one to stop, Shakira continued to write & in 1998, released her 5th album ‘Donde Estan Los Ladrones?’. The album contained 2 latin chart #1’s, and made her famous throughout the world. At a total of 8 million sold, it is one of the the most successful spanish albums in history. She then became the first Spanish artist to do an MTv Unpluggedm and it reached a multi-cultural audience, and was the beginning sign that she was about to shake the world. The MTV Unplugged album sold around 2 million copies.

From 1999 onwards, Shakira began heavy studies in english. Her goal was to create an album of songs that werent translated from previous records, but were all new material. In 2001, she released ‘Whenever, Whereevr/Suerte’ and took the world by storm. The album laundry Service eventually went on to sell over 15 million copies, and to this date remains the most successful spanish crossover, and shakira’s most successful album. She then went on the ‘Tour Of The Mongoose’ and the DVD ‘Live & Off The Record’ sold over 1 million copies.

In 2005, after 4 years of no new material, Shakira came back with a bang. Her comeback single ‘La Tortura’ ft Alejandro Sanz became one of the biggest spanish language songs in history, bridging borders between langauges, cultures and generations. The song spent 25 weeks at #1 on the latin tracks, and was the lead single for the album ‘Fijacion Oral vol 1’ which became the fastest selling latin album of all time, and has sold nearly 5 million copies in under two years. The album also conatined the Spanish #1 ‘No’ the Latin American favourite ‘Dia De Enero’ and new single ‘La Pared’. She followed this album up with the new english language album ‘Oral Fixation vol 2’ although ‘Don’t bother’ was critically praised, it failed to perform well, and didn’t manage to peak within the billboard top 40. Nevetherless, its mother album went in at #5, which made her the first artist in History to have 2 albums chart in the top 5 in the same year in different languages.

Although the album seemed destined to bomb, it was saved by a song called ‘hips Don’t Lie’ which featured Wyclef Jean. The song became one of the biggest songs in worldwide history, and broke many records including most played song in American history and fastest digital download, with over 266K in 7 days.

She recently released ‘Illegal’ and an upcoming duet is planend with Beyonce entitled ‘Beautiful Liar’ which is sure to be a smash hit. Shakira is a rarity, a female who fought against the odds and became one of the most popular signers to grace the earth. Considered an icon to the people of Latin America, millions of adoring fans, and with nearly 50 million records sold, hunderds of awards [including grammies] under her belt, and a record breaker throughout her career, Shakira is one of the most successful and innovative artists of our generation, and although the majority of you will know her for her hip shaking, there is an illustrious career just waiting for you to discover, of which millions of people already have. We salute you Shakira!

Oasis

Oasis are an English rock band, formed in Manchester in 1991. Led by lead guitarist and principal songwriter Noel Gallagher and his younger brother, vocalist and songwriter Liam Gallagher, they are one of the most successful and prominent English music groups to emerge during the 1990s and with 50 million in album sales and 8 UK number-one singles. The Gallagher brothers are the only remaining original band members from when the band were formed in 1991. The present line-up is completed by Gem Archer (rhythm/lead guitar and songwriting) and Andy Bell (bass guitar and songwriting) and Zak Starkey (drums and percussion), the son of Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr, is a semi-official member.

Musically and lyrically, they cite bands from the British Invasion such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Kinks as influences. They also cite The Smiths, The Jam, T.Rex, Led Zeppelin, The Sex Pistols, The La's, The Stone Roses and even The Bee Gees, as other key influences.

With the success of their critically acclaimed debut album Definitely Maybe and its 20 million selling follow-up, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?; coupled with a rivalry with contemporary band Blur, Oasis became one of the most successful and prominent English bands of the mid-90s and one of the leaders of the Britpop movement. The Gallagher brothers featured regularly in tabloid newspaper stories, and cultivated a reputation as both bad boys and a band of the people. At the height of their fame, their 1997 third album Be Here Now reached #1 in the UK charts and also became the fastest-selling album in chart history, with almost half a million copies sold on the first day alone. Oasis have sold more than 60 million records (including singles) worldwide.

Having survived the loss of founding members and sustaining support from their loyal fan base, Oasis have managed to outlast many of their Britpop contemporaries. In 2005, the Guinness Book of World Records declared Oasis the "Most Successful Act of the Last Decade in the UK." - Wikipedia

U2

http://image.listen.com/img/356x237/7/3/4/8/688437_356x237.jpg

U2 are a rock band from Dublin, Ireland. Formed in 1976, U2 have consistently remained the most popular band in the world since the mid 1980s. The band have sold upwards of 170 million albums worldwide, and approximately 50.5 million albums in the U.S alone. The band have had six #1 albums in the US and nine #1 albums in the UK and are one of the most successful rock bands of all time. They have won 22 Grammy awards, more than any other recording artist. Island Records signed the band in March 1980. U2 released its first international single "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" in May 1980 and released its first album, Boy the following October. It was met with critical praise and is considered by some as one of the better debuts in rock history. Despite Bono’s unfocused, seemingly improvised lyrics, Boy had a specific theme – an examination of the hopes and frustrations of adolescence, touching on fear over sex, identity confusion, death and uncontrollable mood swings. The album gave the band their first hit single, "I Will Follow," which remains a fan favorite to this day. Boy's release was followed by U2's first tour beyond Ireland and the United Kingdom. Despite their unpolished nature, these early live performances nevertheless helped demonstrate U2's potential, as critics noted that Bono was a very "charismatic" and "passionate" showman. One critic was even reminded of a young Rod Stewart. U2 made their first appearance on US television on the Tomorrow show, on 4 June, 1981, performing "I Will Follow" and "Twilight"..

The band's second album, October, was released in 1981. The album contained spiritual lyrics with Bono, The Edge and Larry being committed Christians and making little effort to hide that fact. The three band members had joined a religious group in Dublin called "Shalom," which led all three to question the relationship between the Christian faith and the rock and roll lifestyle. [17] While the Bible has remained a major source of inspiration for Bono’s lyric writing, October is U2's only overtly religious album and is generally held to be among their less successful work.

In 1983, U2 returned with a newfound sense of direction and the release of their third album, War. The album included the song "Sunday Bloody Sunday," which dealt with the troubles in Northern Ireland, including the IRA, using religious imagery. The album's first single, "New Year's Day", was U2's first international hit, reaching the #10 position on the UK charts and nearly cracking the Top 50 on the US charts MTV put the "New Year's Day" video, directed by Meiert Avis, into heavy rotation, which immediately launched U2 to the mass American audience. For the first time, the band began performing to sold-out concerts in mainland Europe and the U.S. on their subsequent War Tour. The image of Bono waving a white flag during performances of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" became a familiar sight. U2 recorded the Under a Blood Red Sky EP on this tour and a live video was also released, both of which received radio and MTV play and helped expand the band's audience. The band released their fourth album, The Unforgettable Fire, in 1984 with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois receiving producing credits.

In March 1987, U2 released The Joshua Tree. The album debuted at #1 in the UK, quickly reached #1 in the U.S., and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, as well as a second Grammy for the "Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal". The singles "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" also quickly went to #1 in the U.S., with "Where the Streets Have No Name" being another heavily played track. The Joshua Tree is not only widely considered one of the band's best albums, it is often considered one of the greatest albums ever recorded. It was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the band's "three masterpieces" (alongside Achtung Baby and All That You Can't Leave Behind), as well as appearing at #26 on the magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It has sold over 10 million copies in the US, over 9 million in Europe and over 25 million worldwide which makes it their best selling album.

In November 1991, U2 released the often experimental and distorted Achtung Baby in which the band had used influences from dance music. It was also a more inward and personal record (Edge going through a divorce), and as a result, darker than the band's previous work. Bono refers to U2's new sound as "4 men chopping down the Joshua Tree". Commercially and critically it was one of the band's most successful albums with sales of over 17 million, and like The Joshua Tree, is often cited as one of rock's greatest. Throughout the 90's U2 continued to experiment and released "Zooropa" & "Pop" which were less succesful.

All That You Can't Leave Behind, was released in October 2000, and was considered by many of those not won over by the band's 1990s experimentation, as a return to grace. The album featured the band reverting to its traditional sound of the 1980s. Regarded by many, including Rolling Stone magazine, as U2's "third masterpiece" alongside The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, it was once again produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. It debuted at #1 in 22 countries and spawned a world-wide smash hit single, "Beautiful Day," which also earned three of a total of six Grammy Awards associated with the album. "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of", "Elevation" and "Walk On" were also successful singles. The album also would win the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2002 and garnered two Record of the Year awards in consecutive years. It has sold over 12 million to date.

The follow up album "How to dismantle an atomic Bomb" was released on 22 November worldwide and 23 November in the United States. It debuted at #1 in 32 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the band's native Ireland. It sold 840,000 units in the United States in its first week. This was a personal record for the band, nearly doubling the first-week sales of All That You Can't Leave Behind in the US. 2005 also saw U2's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in their first year of eligibility. Worldwide sales as of 2006 number close to 10 million copies sold. In 2006 the band released their third 'Best of' U218 Singles.

STEPS

Steps are a highly successful pop group who went on to sell 14 consecutive top 5 singles (a feat for a British act at the time bettered only by the Beatles) and sold more than 10 million albums from when they formed in 1997 to the time they eventually split on Boxing Day 2001. The group was made up of Claire Richards, Ian (‘H’) Watkins, Faye Tozer, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee. They were the brainchild of pop master, Pete Waterman, who wanted to recreate the sound of ABBA and blend it with a more modern sound.

However, their first single - the line dancing classic, 5,6,7,8 - was not like this style, and as a result missed the top 10 in the UK despite it hitting the number one spot in Australia. Nevertheless, after featuring on the video game Dancing Stage Euromix 2, the song became one of the highest selling singles never to actually reach the top 10. The hits continued as their cover of Bananarama’s, Last Thing On My Mind entered the top 10 at number 6 in 1998, closely followed by the ABBAtastic One For Sorrow, which soon became their highest charting song at number 2. Their next single was a double A side - Heartbeat, a ballad from the Step One album and Tragedy, a Bee Gees cover with an unforgettable wedding day inspired video. The tracks gave the band their first ever UK number 1 single in January 1999. Better Best Forgotten was the final track taken from the group’s debut album, and despite charting at a respectable number 2, was, in my honest opinion, Better Best Forgotten.

The group returned in the autumn of 1999 with their follow up album Steptacular. The album went to the top of the charts giving Steps their first number 1 album. Including Tragedy, the group released a total of six singles from the album including After The Love Has Gone, Deeper Shade Of Blue and When I Said Goodbye, which was released with the Latin, based Summer Of Love. All the songs released from the album were very successful, each reaching the top 5. The band then completed a sell out national tour, and was awarded the Brit Award for Best Selling Live Act of the year in February 2000.

Later that year, the group returned with their third studio album entitled ‘Buzz’ which entered the UK charts at number 4, on which the individual members of the group each co-wrote a song, which they would then go on to sing on their tour. The album featured the group’s second and final number 1 song, Stomp, as well as a cover of Kylie Minogue’s Better The Devil You Know and the classic It’s The Way You Make Me Feel which I am assured by many is their favourite Steps song. The album became the last full studio album of new material for the band who were about to enter the Golden Era.

The band released their Gold: Greatest Hits album in 2001 which contained all of their hits as well as songs including Chain Reaction and Words Are Not Enough, both of which sailed into the top 10 in early 2001. The band took the album on the Gold Tour in the autumn of the same year before announcing their sudden split on Boxing Day, leaving many fans gutted and disappointed. H and Claire went on to have a semi-successful pop career as well as short stint presenting Saturday morning favourite SM:TV Live with Brian Dowling and Tess Daly. Faye entered the top 10 with a song she had recorded with Russell Watson, and Lisa and Lee featured on two separate MTV reality TV programmes. Neither had much success, with Lisa having to give up her UK solo career and Lee being chucked out of MTV’s Totally Boyband for bringing nothing to the band. Lisa has commented that their may be a Steps reunion on the cards as they were approached at the end of 2005. Keep your eyes peeled everyone!

Todays Artist Is:

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1970) is an American pop and R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. Carey made her debut in 1990 under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola and became the first recording act to have its first five singles top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Following her marriage to Mottola in 1993, a series of hit records established her position as Columbia's highest-selling act. According to Billboard magazine, she was the most successful artist of the 1990s in the United States.

Carey took more control over her image and music following her separation from Mottola in 1997, and she introduced elements of hip hop into her album material. Her popularity was in decline when she left Columbia in 2001, and she was dropped by Virgin Records the following year after a highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown and the poor reception of Glitter, her film and soundtrack project.

In 2002 Carey signed with Island/Def Jam, and after an unsuccessful period she returned to the forefront of pop music in 2005.

In 2000 the World Music Awards named Carey the Best-Selling Female Artist Of All Time, and she has recorded the most U.S. number-one singles for a female solo artist (seventeen).

In addition to her commercial accomplishments, she is well-known for her melismatic singing voice, vocal range, power, and use of whistle register. Critics have said that Carey's efforts to showcase her vocal talents have been at the expense of communicating true emotion through song.

Saturday 23rd Of December.

Todays Artist Is:

Paul McCartney

Sir James Paul McCartney, MBE (born 18 June 1942, Liverpool) is an English singer and songwriter. Following his departure from The Beatles, McCartney launched a successful solo career and formed the band Wings with his wife, Linda McCartney. McCartney has also worked on film scores, classical music and ambient/electronic music. He has released a large catalogue of songs as a solo artist, and has also taken part in projects to assist international charities.

McCartney is listed in The Guinness Book Of Records as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history, with sales of 100 million singles and 60 gold discs. McCartney's song "Yesterday" is listed as the most covered song in history and has been played more than 7,000,000 times on American TV and radio. Wings' 1977 single "Mull of Kintyre" became the first single to sell more than two million copies in the UK, and remained the UK's top seller until surpassed in 1984 by Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (to which McCartney contributed background vocals). Paul also played Bass Guitar on the 2004 Band Aid 20 remake.

McCartney's company MPL Communications owns the copyrights to more than three thousand songs, including all of the songs written by Buddy Holly, along with the publishing rights to musicals, such as Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, and Grease. He also invested £30 million of his own money into setting up the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts which was opened by the Queen in 1996. It's musical graduates have included video/film director Liam Lynch, The Zutons & Sandi Thom.

Aside from his musical work, McCartney is a painter, an advocate for animal rights, vegetarianism, and music education, and is active in campaigns against landmines, seal culls and Third World debt.

Including his career with the Beatles, Paul McCartney has had 29 USA #1 singles (including 9 post-Beatles) & 21 UK #1 singles (4 post-Beatles); 27 USA #1 albums (including 8 post-Beatles) & 22 UK #1 albums (7 post-Beatles), which is more than other other person in all four categories.

In December 2006, Sir Paul McCartney finished 2nd in a BBC poll to find the UK's Leading Living Icon, behind Sir David Attenborough (Other musical icons inside the top 10 were Morrissey (3rd); David Bowie (5th) & Kate Bush (7th)).

Christmas Eve thanks to Jester!

Christmas Eve - Sunday 24th December

Today's Artist is:

GIRLS ALOUD

Girls Aloud are a pop group from the United Kingdom.

Created from TV talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, Girls Aloud have achieved notable success, with thirteen top 10 hit singles in the British charts (including two number one singles) and four hit albums (including a number one album). Internationally their music has also been released throughout UK, Europe, Australia and Asia.

For a modern pop group, they have received unprecedented praise from broadsheet newspapers and the rock music press, with publications including the Observer, and the NME giving rave reviews to their music.

All of their thirteen singles have entered the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart: a feat no other girl group has ever achieved. They are also one of the few reality TV acts to have had continued success.
