Simon Cowell has a new singing show starting on ITV soon, though he's just stepped back from judging it. Maya Jama is hosting, with Gary Barlow, Mabel and Craig David on the panel (certainly a mix of people )

The format sounds a little confusing, but I imagine it'll make more sense once it starts. "The show will offer musical variety acts a chance to win a cash prize but then they must decide if they want to cash out or gamble to stay in the competition." is the just of it from the BBC article today.

And it's a mix of fairly professional (but not famous) acts from a variety of genres competing from what I've heard, I know a friend's indie-pop band who are appearing on it!

Mabel has apparently pulled out, seems she wasn't happy with Simon no longer judging lol. Dawn French will now also be on the panel, but she isn't a replacement for Mabel (there will be a 4th judge)

Meh I’m half and half.

I’ll start with my critique so Part of me feels like the audience are always gonna be on the side of the reigning champion though (like it’s sort of set up that we want her to defend her crown) so the vote feels like it’s in her favour from the off if that makes sense (I feel like it may have worked better had say the audience not known the reigning champion it’s a bit of a error to tell them as the shows not live).

It’s alright I suppose and the money concept is interesting but I feel like these kinds of shows just aren’t relevant anymore in terms of finding someone who’s gonna be a successful chart artist but as an entertainment show it’s fine there’s been worse shows out there for sure.

Funny you mention that because I watch it and just find the whole thing so dated

I think it’s harder than ever in the streaming era for new artists to emerge and shows like this don’t have the appeal that shows like X Factor (and previously) Pop Idol had.

I think if they had a panel of people who were all current it may feel trendy (Craig David’s probably the best judge in this aspect of the show and Maya Jamas a good host) but Dawn French, Alesha Dixon and Gary Barlow are never gonna be finding a chart star in 2021/22

I presume for this show the Audience was different each show? They’ve already mentioned about 10 times on tonight’s show that Ella is the reigning champion like why keep saying it ffs I think the audience should’ve been unaware of who the reigning champion was until after they’ve voted it makes it all unbiased in my opinion.

If it didn’t have the irritating Gary Barlow and Maya Jama on it I’d watch but can’t stand either unfortunately.
Having the audience vote is a low figure to base the votes on so it would have been interesting to see would the public have voted any differently, i was rooting for Ella especially from the 2nd show. Is the final going to be live or it is it done and dusted and the decision just down to the audience vote, i wonder would having the votes divided by 3 work on a show like this, say have audience vote, public vote and also the judges to vote.
Does anyone know how the contestants for the show were selected was it via an audition or do they have some form of connection already to the industry?
I was wondering the same, the show seems to be generating very little hype and they have been scarce enough with the information about the show such as how the contestants were selected.

I'm enjoying this so far, the stakes feel really high even without the prize being a recording contract at the end of it. Ella has been sensational but I'm glad she cashed out last night, she deserved to walk away with something and seeing her lose would've been devastating!

Social media has been extremely cynical and I understand somewhat when Cowell is involved but at the same time, Ella's clearly getting through on the strength of her songs + vocals and, until last night, she was easily the best from each group in my view.

I don't really care whether they've had any industry connection or not, if music is your passion then you're undoubtedly going to give cracking the industry a shot and will have made some level of inroad.

I know one of the artists, they were contacted via email and send an audition video filmed at home.

In general, most of the artists on there have previous releases to varying degrees of success. Youngr (from Monday's show) is the only one with a Wikipedia page, and was previously signed by Island Records.

So in a way it's a second chance for most of them, I think the talent on display was great, they are all great singers so it will be interesting to see does it lead to anything for any of them outside of the cash.
It's an odd rule how a contestant who has won the public vote say five times only wins 50k (or even nothing), but someone can win only once tonight they can walk away with 500k??

What I’d have done is… scrap the walk the line part and have one winner from each show and put the winners of each show against one another and then have someone take £500k like that. The concept of someone potentially singing just once and getting £500k is a bit confusing and I’d feel a bit cheated seeing someone do one performance and take it over someone who potentially may have gotten through every show and fell at the last hurdle.

I don’t know if I can see the show coming back though as a nation right now I feel we’re tired of singing based talent shows. From the shows I’ve seen there were a few people on there who had talent but it lacked a personal connection of like rooting for the contestants if that makes sense I know it died a slow death but with X Factor I felt like I knew the contestants on a personal level and I’d root for them where as with this I didn’t really give a toss.

I enjoyed the show but agree that parts of the format were a little confusing. I also thought the contestants in the final were the weakest of any show overall.

One part I don't understand is the first show offer. They offered Ella 10k or continue, but then the next night she had the choice of 20k or continue without having to risk anything between those choices so was guaranteed at least 20k anyway?
