I'm somewhat amazed this isn't the highest NEEDTOBREATHE song in my countdown as it's one of the songs that has absolutely been a soundtrack to my year but, thanks to my points system, here we are! This song is just so joyous and the tune just flows so freely, making it a song that is simply a pleasure to listen to over and over again.

The #1s are falling thick and fast now we're into the Top 25, and the next to go is The Knocks' highest offering for the year in 'The River'. This is the sort of dance song that is just perfect for the winter, very cosy and warm-sounding and very much a soundtrack to those bus journeys on dark evenings. In hindsignt it was pretty unlucky to only spend a single week at the top!

Successive #1s in a row now! And a song which I have to say I wouldn't have gone anywhere near when I first got into Nico & Vinz. Thankfully I've come to appreciate low-key songs a lot more over the past few years, allowing me to understand how good this song is. It was the #1 when I initially compiled my EOY so was difficult to rate but I think this position suits it nicely!

We've definitely hit a run of songs which were in my chart when I compiled this EOY :P (the algorithms definitely benefitted some of them more than reasonable but I think this does deserve to be in the Top 20!) An incredibly funky dance-pop song with a focus on the beauty of dancing, this one is yet to grow old on me, and they finally released a clean version of it so I can listen guilt-free too!

Aaand another song still in my chart! This was in the Top 10 at the same time as Glass Animals but couldn't be more different, tackling the difficulties of mental health and not being able to share your feelings. There are some abnormalities in the piece (the beat 'lifting' as the line about jumping from the second floor is sung is an interisting one) but they have taken an incredibly sad narrative and made it into an incredibly beautiful song.

Into the Mystery sounds really lovely, that's an impressive chart run and quite a low peak to manage the top 20 but a great discovery for me!
Fair result for "Trouble" which was literally only released last November.

The Coronas swap their #3 from last year for a #15 this year which isn't bad in the slightest! I added this song to my playlist after the promise of a 'single version' on Spotify - they don't appear to have promoted the 'single' very well as there was never a music video but that doesn't stop this song from being fantastic. It has everything in it that a Coronas song needs and continued to stick in my head throughout all the cold months last year.

It feels quite odd this being in my 2022 EOY as it is a 2021 song, and particularly since they've had an entirely new era since this song! The January lull whilst it was out also means that it was in the Top 5 before I moved things around a bit so #14 is probably a more reasonable result for this song. It's a very nice song anyway, the song being about being there for someone when they need it the most and giving them the reassurance they need.

This was CoCo and the Butterfields' only #1 this year, but remarkably not their highest song! There's something special about this song, a very powerful track about the places they grew up, and whilst I've never been to Canterbury (let alone grown up there!) it's very relatable, talking about how life used to be and going back to that life whenever possible. The music video also has sections in sign language which is a nice touch as well.

And just missing out on the Top 10 we have this steel drum-infused dance tune, and with its theme of making time for people whenever you're feeling down it was perfect for the lockdown we were all facing at that point in the year. Although it also worked very nicely during the sunnier months and managed to just about stick around in my charts to see them. It's a great song and I should definitely pay more attention to Purple Disco Machine!

yay for Fireworks making a high appearance! although it was PDM's Let the Sun Shine remix that really did it for me last year - then this year his new one In The Dark is very good.

Never did I think a song which missed the Top 10 in my weekly chart would make it there in the EOY but here we are! It took me so long to finally get into this song that I didn't think a #1 would be particularly suitable, but it's been rewarded with what is probably the longest chart run in my chart ever (I've not actually counted but 7+ months in is pretty good going!) The song has a really ear-grabbing chorus, but the way the song evolves and builds throughout, with various peaks and troughs, makes it sort-of a work of art. Very much deserving of its Top 10 spot!

Danny Vera's debut hit in my chart was the first #1 of 2021, and a very worthy one. The song pretty much only has one extended melody which is repeated throughout the song, but those dark-sounding vocals and very laid-back guitar strings (building up throughout the song) caught me on first listen and stuck with me through the first part of the year, eventually racking up a full five weeks atop my chart. Definitely need to look out for more from Mr. Vera as I've liked what I've heard very much.

I hadn't really paid much attention to White Lies since Tokyo (and not too much before that) but this song appeared on my Discover Weekly and just grabbed my attention. The song just works so well together, and the theme of trying to keep yourself together when your mind is pulling in all directions is of course very topical. Some lyrics I don't necessarily agree with in there, but the song itself is a very good piece of music.

Get that 2015-esque chart run :P Fair to say it took me a while to fully warm to this song after liking it on first listen, however once I did it quickly became one of my favourites, and my favourite London Grammar song by quite a way. The slow ballad-esque style, the way her voice stands out, the overarching theme of despair as the song goes on, all of these things make the song what it is. And whilst I'm not always a massive fan of this group, I recognise a good song when I see one, and this is most certainly that.
