Commentary

Happy New Year everyone! So in what is probably not a huge surprise to anyone, the VERY long awaited and unexpected return of ABBA dominates my end of year chart, with the Swedish legends taking No.1 and No.3 as well as five other entries, AND the No.1 album of the year.

Instant disco classic Don't Shut Me Down eventually came out on top after I liked both of the comeback singles equally initially, a wonderful addition to the ABBA canon fronted by Agnetha, a tale of love, hope and coping with plenty of nods to previous singles and a killer chorus. Meanwhile, Frida's star turn on the beautifully nostalgic and triumphant ballad I Still Have Faith In You doesn't disgrace itself in third place.

Sandwhiched in between is Melodifestivalen discovery Clara Klingenström, who rode the wildcard wave to come out of nowhere and finish top five in the final, becoming a major star in the process with the fantastic indie-pop strummer Behöver Inte Dig Idag - I so would have loved to see Sweden take a chance on this and have a hunch it might have served them a little better than the good but generic Voices by Tusse. Another song from a strong Melfest year is also in the top ten - Still Young, the schlager final comeback from the iconic Charlotte Perrelli, which finishes 7th.

That's it for Eurovision related songs at the very top, with the highest actual entry, El Diablo by Cyprus' Lady Gaga tribute Elena Tsagrinou coming 16th. There is representation in the top ten from Italian winner, and already global superstars Måneskin, however, who finish at No.8 with the huge hit (thanks to TikTok as much as Eurovision) I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE. Their winner also comes top 40, along with the entries from Belgium and Norway.

The remaining five slots in the top ten are courtesy of BJSC, with Self Esteem leading the pack of my own entries with the incredible modern day Baz Luhrman type track, I Do This All The Time, which should have been No.1 for weeks. It wasn't but she has become a star in the last few months and has topped lots of respected year-end album lists, so despite 'only' finishing 10th in BJSC and not charting at all with I Do This All The Time, she has had the last laugh.

German duo Cora's 80s track Amsterdam is No.5, a bit of an old find for me which unsurprisingly flopped in the BJSC final, but their German ode to the Dutch city is just wonderful. And returning Swedish Italo Disco duo Sally Shapiro's stunning electropop ballad Forget About You is No.6. Also just popping in is another Swede, ishi vu with electronic dance track This Is Your Life, which bagged the bronze medal in its contest and finishes 10th in my end of year ranking.

The highest 'foreign' BJSC entry of a few discoveries scattered among the top 100 is Trifoski's runner-up Try Not To Be Afraid by DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ feat Delilah Brao, Luke Markinson & Anyelisax, marking the second time the mysterious DJ Sabrina has finished top ten in my end of year chart - she also finished 9th in 2019 with my own entry All The Beautiful Things U Do - the two songs are more or less on par for me, both completely brilliant.

Big UK hits (the aforementioned Eurovision winners excepted) are few and far between as is often the way, but kudos to the following for making the grade - Remember by Becky Hill & David Guetta (28), Ed and Elton's recent No.1 single Merry Christmas (29) and two of the former's other chart toppers, Shivers (63) and Bad Habits (85), Adele's comeback Easy On Me (43), two from the year's biggest new star Olivia Rodrigo - good 4 u (51) and drivers license (59), the most unexpected No.1 for years, Cold Heart by Elton John and Dua Lipa (53), Heartbreak Anthem by Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix (58), a triumphant top 10 return from the great ATB, along with Topic on Your Love (9PM) (60), Nathan Evans' novelty sea shanty hit Wellerman (71), Kiss My (Uh Oh) by Anne-Marie and Little Mix (83), Heat Waves by Glass Animals (94), Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish (96), and another Ed track - Overpass Grafiti at 99.

In a great year for many of my favourite acts being active simultaneously, the ABBA album managed to edge out both Delta Goodrem's Bridge Over Troubled Dreams at No.2, and Steps' What The Future Holds Pt.2, the follow-up to my favourite album of 2020. The victor in last year's end of year songs chart, dodie finishes at No.4 with her debut album Build A Problem, while my favourite Aussie group Sheppard complete the top five with Kaleidoscope Eyes. This means usual heavyweights Ed Sheeran and Adele finish as low as No.6 and No.9 respectively, with albums by Agnes, Smith & Thell and Clara Klingenström also in the top ten.

A pretty strong year for both songs and albums overall, but like 2020 it was not an easy year outside music - surely 2022 will be better?

27. Reba McEntire - Fancy (Dave Audé Remix)

28. Becky Hill & David Guetta - Remember I've funnily enough only just got into this more now rather than months ago when it was smashing. Becky's really outdone the Voice tag now. 8 years and still going strong even if the majority is featuring rather than the lead.

29. Ed Sheeran & Elton John - Merry Christmas I'd like this a lot more if Mr Elton wasn't singing on it oops. He kinda work okay on the Dua remix but not this.

35. DJ Muscleboy feat Yohanna - Spending My Time

43. Adele - Easy On Me - Unpopular opinion but I liked this to begin with but I got bored of it pretty quickly and coming from someone who is a big Adele fan too oops. The 'Eeeasssy' bits grate after a while for me. She still has the voice obviously though which we all know and love!

53. Elton John & Dua Lipa - Cold Heart (PNAU Remix) wasn't sure about this at first but it clicked eventually and I love it now. I was so slow tweaking on Dua singing another Elton song on top of 'Sacrafice' lmao. I legit thought it was an original song she was singing

Hi Rich! Here are my favourites!

1. ABBA - Don't Shut Me Down - A decent #1 and a decent comeback from ABBA! Whilst it's not my usual genre it was nice to see them get themselves into the Top 10.

4. Self Esteem - I Do This All The Time - Probably my favourite BJSC finalist this year, the chorus is incredibly strong and the talking in the verses is very refreshing.

6. Sally Shapiro - Forget About You

23. Hooverphonic - The Wrong Place - One of the best Eurovision entries this year, whilst I probably prefer Luka as lead singer to Geike this is still a very well put-together song.

27. Reba McEntire - Fancy (Dave Audé Remix)

29. Ed Sheeran & Elton John - Merry Christmas

31. Sheppard - The Reasons Why - This has grown on me a lot as the weeks have gone by, I don't think I've heard many songs with a female lead so it took a while getting used to it but it is a lovely song.

53. Elton John & Dua Lipa - Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)

58. Galantis, David Guetta & Little Mix - Heartbreak Anthem

71. Nathan Evans - Wellerman (220 Kid x Billen Ted Remix)

79. James Newman - Embers - Absolutely didn't deserve nul points! :(

89. Daði Freyr - 10 Years

90. Tusse - Voices

93. Maisie Peters - Psycho

94. Glass Animals - Heat Waves - Really happy to see this become so popular this year! Glass Animals certainly deserve it.

Great chart, thanks for posting!

Yay for We're God appearing here :w00t: #underrated

Also nice to see you're a fan of "Aurora" as well! I had considered sending it to BJSC last year but sent "Getting Late" instead

Thanks for commenting Rob!

Ha yes, quite high for Cora in the end considering how old it is! Glad you liked quite a few of my BJSC entries here this year.

Oh yeah Pete's BJSC Hooverphonic was fab, my 18 I think at the time and a big hit in my end of year chart that year too, they're a really good band.

Oops at Shivers, I didn't expect it to finish so low really, I think it's great but it wore on me after the first few weeks.

Yeah quite an unepxected track from Billie really, one of my favourites from her tbh, it does stand out.

Thanks for commenting Pete,

I was so pleased to see ABBA get a top ten with a new single, no mean feat for new material from a band in their 70s! I'm really glad you liked Self Esteem's track, I agree that it stands out.

Yes I had a feeling you'd approve of Hooverphonic making it to Eurovision, it's a shame what went down with replacing the singers really, but it was such a good song and performance and didn't deserve to flop so hard (3 points in the televote - I voted for it at least!)

Glad the Sheppard song has grown on you, I love Amy's voice and it's a really sweet song.

Embers was definitely a solid song in studio version. The live performance wasn't very impactful but it did deserve some points at least, just got a bit lost I suppose.

Yay for We're God appearing here :w00t: #underrated

Also nice to see you're a fan of "Aurora" as well! I had considered sending it to BJSC last year but sent "Getting Late" instead

We're soooo Good. Completely underrated indeed, at least Dua didn't go without success elsewhere in 2021. It's quite curious that she smashes - deservedly - 90% of the time, but every so often she has a song that doesn't connect as much with the GP. Their loss with We're Good.

Oh yeah I considered Aurora too, and it's a shame I didn't send it in a way as I missed my (usually) annual South African entry. It's a really good song with a lovely vocal.

Thanks for commenting Kath!

my faves of the list

1. ABBA - Don't Shut Me Down – a great comeback for Abba along with #3, I'm not a huge fan but both tracks did make my top 40 for a week

3. ABBA - I Still Have Faith In You

4. Self Esteem - I Do This All The Time

6. Sally Shapiro - Forget About You

28. Becky Hill & David Guetta - Remember

29. Ed Sheeran & Elton John - Merry Christmas

32. Måneskin - ZITTI E BUONI

35. DJ Muscleboy feat Yohanna - Spending My Time

38. ABBA - Keep An Eye On Dan – aha thanks for reminding me this exists, past the novelty of it having my name in the song title it's actually rather decent though

43. Adele - Easy On Me

53. Elton John & Dua Lipa - Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)

85. Ed Sheeran - Bad Habits – this was fairly good by Ed's standards but quickly got rinsed on the radio so never had the desire to listen to it on my own accord

87. Erika Vikman - Syntisten Pöytä

89. Daði Freyr - 10 Years

some great picks from the mainstream hits too, #28, #43, #53, #58 and #60 were all highlights from the chart last year.

Hi Rich! Pleased to see Delta doing as well as ever, it's a strong and tight album from her though I've not listened to it quite as much as usual. I think it's probably a stronger overall package than Wings of the Wild but without the same high highs on the whole? Still great nonetheless! Love Agnes being in your top 10 albums too, a wonderful surprise

I'm not the biggest ABBA fan going (sacrilege I know! :kink:) but Don't Shut Me Down was a nice track so can't begrudge that being your #1! Really liked Clara Klingenström being the Melfest underdog last year, the song grew with each play and crept into my weekly top 40 too after initially not caring too much. Can't believe it's almost Melfest time again, I'm excited!

Ladder In My Tights! *.* I've loved that song for ages now, can't believe they picked All I Wanna Do to be a single over that!

Thanks for commenting! I must check out that remix of Your Love (9PM), I loved the 90s Sequential One mixes.

Thanks Dan, glad to hear you liked the ABBA songs somewhat! Ha, yeah Keep An Eye On Dan is definitely an album highlight, I was a little unsure what to expect when I saw the song title.

Yes Fancy was such a brilliant entry from you, a real curveball that I absolutely loved immediately, glad it did so well for you and would have loved to see it win, even though Midnight Rapture made my chart too.

Agreed about Lauren, such a shame it's not taking off commercially, it sounds like it could have done!

Glad you liked The Kelly Family Christmas song, it's pretty jolly and catchy although I didn't expect it to go anywhere really in the results!

Yes every now and then I do still hear a big chart smash that I enjoy! The ATB song was a really welcome and unexpected top 10 return for him.

Thanks Joseph! Yeah I see what you mean about the Delta album, I do feel like the strongest songs on it were released as singles last year so as a whole it maybe didn't have as much mileage as her other albums, which pretty much always top my end of year charts (apart from Only Santa Knows and the Olivia soundtrack, oops!). But it's incredibly consistent anyway and I do really enjoy it. Agreed about Agnes, her quality never seems to let up.

Ha, I guess not everyone can be but really glad to hear you enjoyed Don't Shut Me Down somewhat. Glad Clara's grew on you too, I really loved her song and that the Swedish public took to her story and infectious personality. She wasn't as professional as all the other acts, particularly with her reactions to getting through etc, but I don't think it mattered. Yeah I'm really looking forward to it starting too!

Unbelievably I never checked out Amy Studt's debut album until this year, even though Misfit was in my 2003 end of year chart. I finally checked it out after seeing a thread about it on Buzzjack and was impressed, but particularly with the complete anthem that is Ladder In My Tights! I too can't believe it was overlooked for that pointless cover, I reckon it could have been another top 10 for her and not derailed the campaign completely like that did :drama:
