Little Big Bear produced a scintillating performance to give Aidan O'Brien his 17th victory in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, but little did we know until the race was over how touch and go the colt's participation was.

O'Brien said: “We had a little bit of a scare with him before the race. After coming up here he kicked a wall and the clip of the shoe went into his hind foot, so he was a bit tender when we put the shoe back on him.

Baaeed has been handed three possible routes to retirement, with trainer William Haggas on Thursday making clear for the first time that the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe will be considered for the exceptional Juddmonte International hero.

Having proved unbeatable over a mile, the world's highest-rated thoroughbred rose to an astonishing new level on his first attempt at a mile and a quarter, crushing Mishriff by six and a half lengths to earn a Racing Post Rating of 138, one that has been topped on turf only by Frankel.

The 13-year-old boy killed following an incident at a beach race meeting at Glenbeigh in County Kerry was Jack de Bromhead.

He is the son of horse trainer Henry de Bromhead.

Emergency services responded to reports of the incident at Rossbeigh beach at about 17:20 local time, police said.

The young jockey was treated at the scene but was later pronounced dead. It is understood he fell from his mount while participating in the race.

The Glenbeigh races is a popular two-day event with young jockeys.

Sunday's racing has been cancelled following the death.

Henry de Bromhead is one of jump racing's leading trainers, winning the last two Champion Hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival with Honeysuckle, and the 2021 and 2022 Gold Cup with Minella Indo and A Plus Tard.

Minzaal won the Sprint Cup at Haydock in a record time as he eased to a first career Group One victory.

The 7-2 shot, trained by Owen Burrows and ridden by Jim Crowley, sat behind the early pacesetters before hitting his stride in the final six furlongs.

The four-year-old won by three and three-quarter lengths, with last year's winner Emaraaty Ana in second and Rohaan in third.

Haydock officials on Saturday bemoaned bad luck with the weather after more than a third of runners on the Betfair Sprint Cup card were taken out, the vast majority due to the quick ground.

A total of 34 horses were pulled out of the track's signature Flat fixture, with the seven-race card taking place on good to firm, firm in places.

The going was changed from good to firm on Saturday morning after a dry and warm night. A total of 8-10mm of rain was forecast on raceday but failed to materialise.

All but four of the non-runners were due to the going on a card that attracted 88 declarations.

New London heads a field of nine runners for Saturday's St Leger at Doncaster.

The Dubawi colt, trained by Charlie Appleby, will seek a fifth win from six races when he runs in the final Classic of the British Flat racing season.

Royal Ascot winner Eldar Eldarov, Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal and unbeaten filly Haskoy are among other contenders.

Meanwhile, Vadeni will take on Mishriff and Luxembourg in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

Godolphin trainer Appleby will be hoping for a second successive Leger win after triumphing with Hurricane Lane last year.

Eldar Eldarov won the rescheduled St Leger at Doncaster as British horse racing resumed and paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

The world's oldest Classic had been put back 24 hours and a two-minute silence was observed before racing began.

Jockeys and trainers bowed their heads before a rendition of the national anthem.

"There is an emptiness as we lost a great friend and ambassador in the Queen," said jockey Frankie Dettori.

David Egan partnered Eldar Eldarov, trained by Roger Varian, to victory in his first ride in the St Leger.

Trainer Roger Varian enjoyed seven winners across three cards on Saturday - at combined odds of 34,838-1.

He had trebles at Ayr and Newbury, and another victory at Newmarket.

Sakheer's impressive victory in the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury was among the highlights, six days after Varian won the St Leger with Eldar Eldarov.

Meanwhile, Danny Tudhope became the first Scottish jockey for 50 years to win the Ayr Gold Cup on home turf as Summerghand triumphed.

The 12-1 shot, trained by David O'Meara, came through late to claim victory and Tudhope punched the air with delight as he emulated compatriot Richard Hutchinson who won on Swinging Junior in 1972.

Newmarket trainer Varian said it was "special" to have seven winners on the same day.

"It's been an amazing week with the St Leger and now all these winners in a flash," he said.

The Aga Khan's team and trainer Jean-Claude Rouget have elected to step Eclipse winner Vadeni up to a mile and a half for the first time in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Last seen when third behind Arc favourite Luxembourg and Onesto in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, Vadeni had originally been targeted at the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot.

But the Aga Khan's racing manager Georges Rimaud told the Racing Post: "We have decided that the forecast for France looks better than England and so we will stay here and profit from the dry spell."

Coral make Vadeni an 11-1 chance for the Arc, with Luxembourg their 4-1 favourite and Alpinista next best at 5-1.

Willie Mullins' Guinness Kerry National hand has been strengthened further after the hat-trick-seeking Rock Road got into Wednesday afternoon's feature race (4.20) at Listowel as first reserve.

The ten-year-old gets the chance to follow up his wins at Galway and Killarney in the €200,000 contest after Jessica Harrington took out Discordantly, who had been a 22-1 chance, because of a stone bruise.

Rock Road joins his stablemate El Barra at the head of the market as Mullins looks to repeat his 2020 success in the valuable 3m handicap with Cabaret Queen.
