1 Marshmello - American Psycho NEW

"American Psycho" becomes yet another completely undeserved number 1 - it hasn't appeared in any European country's singles chart. It's Marshmello's first chart-topper. Until now, his highest peak position was number 2 - achieved by "Happier".

But the biggest news this week is regarding Eurovision! Until this edition of the chart, no songs from this year's Eurovision had charted - even "Space Man" by Sam Ryder, which at first seemed to have most success around Europe.

However, now, THREE MONTHS AFTER THE CONTEST, a song from it finally debuts at number 13 - the Armenian representative, "Snap" by Rosa Linn!

1 Gorillaz - Cracker Island NEW

Just as I expected, last week's number 1 - "If I Can Dream" by Måneskin - has gone out of the chart... And I was sure that it would be replaced by another absurd chart-topper - which is also true!

"Cracker Island" becomes the first number 1 of Gorillaz in MTV Europe's European chart. Until now their peak position was number 3, achieved by "Feel Good Inc." in 2005.

Central Cee debuts at number 7 with "Doja". The song mentions Doja Cat, who is currently at number 11 with "I Like You" - a collaboration with Post Malone...

Funnily enough, Post Malone experienced the same in 2019 when he was in the highest reaches of the chart with "Circles"... and then "Post Malone" by Sam Feldt appeared in the chart!

The 2 singles of Harry Styles keep yo-yoing. "Late Night Talking" falls 2-11. It's replaced at number 2 by "As It Was", which climbs 12 places from number 14...

Would you believe it - last week's number 1, the record-breaking smash hit "Cracker Island" by Gorillaz has gone out of the chart?!...

The new chart-topper is "Despecha" by Rosalia, which at least reached number 1 in Spain and in addition the Top 20 in France and Switzerland - so it has had some success...

1 Arctic Monkeys - There'd Better Be A Mirrorball NEW

"Hold Me Closer" by Cornelia Jakobs was the Swedish representative at this year's Eurovision, where it reached number 4. However, it hasn't charted here...

On the other hand, another song titled "Hold Me Closer" debuts at number 7! Elton John has already had 2 chart-toppers during the past year - "Cold Heart" (with Dua Lipa) and "Merry Christmas" (with Ed Sheeran). But this is the first hit of Britney Spears since "Pretty Girls" appeared in the chart in 2015.

What about the newest flabbergasting number 1? "There'd Better Be A Mirrorball" marks the first appearance of Arctic Monkeys in MTV Europe's European chart since "Brianstorm" back in 2007 - FIFTEEN YEARS AGO! Before that, they scored 2 other hits - "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" and "When The Sun Goes Down" (their highest-peaking one until now; it reached number 8).

3 David Guetta & Bebe Rexha - I'm Good 2 Up

2 Rosalia - Despecha 2 Up

1 Harry Styles - As It Was 2 Up

"As It Was" by Harry Styles returns to number 1 - this is its sixth (nonconsecutive) week there. And this is an extremely impressive achievement for 2 different reasons!

"As It Was" was last at the top in the chart of June 18. Later it fell as low as number 16... However, now the song returns to number 1 - 14 WEEKS after it was there last!

...And this would have been a record... if it hadn't been for "Shallow" by Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper!

"Shallow" spent 2 consecutive weeks at the top at the end of October and the beginning of November 2018. Then it fell down but, helped by the Oscars, it returned to number 1 in March 2019 - either 17 WEEKS (if we only count "normal" editions of the chart) or 18 WEEKS (if we also count the special edition of the chart for the whole year 2018) LATER!!!!!!

Still, the other thing "As It Was" achieves IS a (joint) record. It's now had 5 separate runs at the top! In the history of MTV Europe's European chart, only 2 other songs have had 5 separate runs at number 1 - "Alors On Danse" by Stromae (in 2010) and "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello (in 2019).

1 Lewis Capaldi - Forget Me 19 Up

As I have mentioned previously, I have extrasensory perception... When "Forget Me" by Lewis Capaldi entered the chart at number 20 last week, I wondered: "Could it actually climb to number 1 next week?"

Well, it's happened now! And its 19-place climb is a record!

Yes, there have been times when the chart has been bigger than a Top 20 - and during those times there were several instances when a song climbed to number 1 from outside the Top 20.

But during the times when the chart has been a Top 20, no song has climbed to the top from number 20 - at least since 1990...

Until now, the biggest climb to the top from inside the Top 20 has been from number 19. This has happened 3 times - first achieved by "Outside" by George Michael in 1998. The other two 18-place climbs to number 1 are actually from earlier this year - "So Good" by Halsey and "Vegas" by Doja Cat.

Just one more thing - "Forget Me" becomes Lewis Capaldi's second chart-topper after "Someone You Loved", which reigned for a total of 9 weeks in 2019.

Last week's chart-topper - "Forget Me" by Lewis Capaldi - has fallen 18 places to number 19! Here is its unbelievable chart run:

20-1-19

"Pink Venom" by BLACKPINK was at number 2 last week... but has gone out of the chart! It's replaced by their follow-up "Shut Down", which debuts exactly at number 2!

"Blue" by Eiffel 65 topped the chart in September 1999. 23 YEARS LATER a song which samples it also reaches number 1!

"I'm Good" becomes David Guetta's eighth number 1 in MTV Europe's European chart after "When Love Takes Over", "Sexy Chick", "Titanium", "Dangerous", "This One's For You", "Flames" and "Let's Love".

When it comes to Bebe Rexha, this is her second chart-topper. Could you guess which was the first?...

..."Sabotage"!...

1 Sam Smith & Kim Petras - Unholy 19 Up

My extrasensory perception strikes again (although this time it was more predictable)! When "Unholy" by Sam Smith and Kim Petras entered the chart at number 20 last week, I wondered: "Could it climb 19 places to the top next week"?

And so it does! Just 2 weeks after "Forget Me" by Lewis Capaldi became the first song (at least since 1990) to go 20-1, "Unholy" does the same!

Sam Smith scores their sixth number 1 after "Writing's On The Wall", "Too Good At Goodbyes", "Promises", "Dancing With A Stranger" and "Diamonds". On the other hand, this is the very first appearance of Kim Petras in the chart.
