I’ve gone off this a bit on a full listen, it’s okay but it’s far from pop album of the year material

I'm really loving it at the moment and prefer it to Charli and Rina's albums. I can't think of any other great pop albums this year? Oops

The only 2 tracks I'm not majorly keen on is Cute & Cruel and True Romance (I have a love hate relationship with that song)

tw: eating disorders + body dysmorphia

Grapefruit continues to grow with every listen. I wasn't going to necessarily share this but it helps to contextualise the song and its meaning: when I was a teenager/early 20s I had a battle with food where I would spit out biscuits and chocolate after chewing it because I didn't want to swallow it among other acts of food rejection. I have had bouts of body dysmorphia probably most of my adult life to varying degrees of intesity and mildness, but I am recently in a much better place with it, although gym has taken over from my obsessions of food and has become a bit of an addiction for me now. It is strange to think that when I was going through this, so too was Tove and it is only now that she is able to properly talk about her battles. Eating disorders are so commonplace and manifest themselves in countless ways (often people not even knowing that they are struggling with their eating). I have taught children as young as 10 that have had eating disorders and I have had heard stories of children I have taught going into their teens after leaving primary school and developing such issues, which then lead to self-harm and more. Someone very close to me currently has body dysmorphia too. I see how it affects people from a stance now where I am mostly in the clear of it and it is a struggle that is not spoken about enough.

Grapefruit is a song that addresses all of that explicitly, honestly, earnestly. It does not hold back or mask its honesty in metaphors or poetic language: it just says outright the battle that so many people face. "Countin' all the calories..." / "Their skin and their bones, that's not me" / "I know my mirrors are lyin'" / "What I see is not me..." / "Wish I could change overnight..." / "I don't like my measurements..." / "Break 'til I wither away" - painful to read, hear and experience but it had to be shared. These are common experiences of people going through eating disorders or body dysmorphia and I am so grateful that someone in Tove's position is addressing it as a result of her own struggles.

It is just one example of why she is one of the best for me. I love the fact that the album explores so many avenues of her femininity: from her sexuality, her problems and struggles, her joys, her battles. A complex insight into her mind, leaving nothing unturned. She continues to amaze me, I love her so much.

<3 it's really great that the power of great music can help us share things like this and feel less alone.

THIS ALBUM. Easily one of the albums of the year for me, sublime, vulnerable and just utterly beautiful.

:cheeseblock:

@ Bal thank you for sharing

Yeah I agree, decent but aside from the pre album tracks and Call On Me I wasn't tooo taken. Grapefruit and No One Dies From Love are excellent in particular though!

'2 Die 4' has finally clicked with me after finding the interpolation a little too corny for a while :cheeseblock:

'True Romance' is so underrated (although I do agree that 'No One Dies From Love' is the best of the singles) - her vocals are an effective gut punch for me rather than a hinderance.

Pre-album aside, my favourites are 'Call on Me' and 'Pineapple Slice' (I can't unhear 'Ring My Bell' by Anita Ward during parts of the production *.*)

i think the problem with this album is she has some really strong music there - true romance, i'm to blame & grapefruit and then for some reason she's backtracked to feature more generic music on the album... like i like songs like 2 die 4 and noone dies from love but their a huge step back from i'm to blame... then she goes fully "please the gays" with call on me.

I love No One Dies From Love, but I feel the album overall is a bit... bare? I think listening to Agnes Magic Still Exists, which has such a rich soundscape even on my shitty earphones that I use for outside, and then this it comes across as slightly disappointing (for now).

Cute & Cruel would make a cute single though.

Finally got round to hearing this in full and it's actually really good! I think I can confidently say it's her second best album behind the debut, and definitely an improvement on the previous couple. Consider me fully back onboard the Tove Lo train!

Oh, and 'Pineapple Slice' = the superior SG Lewis collab.

Co-signed! I think it could challenge for my overall second favourite on the album after 'No One Dies From Love'

No way at both of these points!

Blue Lips >> Queen of the Clouds > Sunshine Kitty > Lady Wood > Dirt Femme

That seems shady to this album but it's just the quality of the others!! All are above 8/10.

I even like 'True Romance' now, which I didn't really think possible. I suddenly "got" it on my second full play of the album, I love how dramatic it gets towards the end.

'Suburbia' is pure sonic bliss and 'Kick in the Head' is so wonderfully bizarre.

I think this is a solid album overall. Just over half the album I've added to my regular playlists. I really like "No One Dies From Love", "Die 4 You" & "Grapefruit". The former has been a regular listen since its release (it's a great song to walk to). "Call On Me", "Suburbia" and "True Romantics" are great too.
I think this might have to be my album of the year now, I get something that I love from every song now and seeing it live was just perfect.
