85. The View - Wasted Little DJ's

Wasted Little DJs is the debut single by Dundee indie band The View. Before its physical release on August 8, 2006, the single had reached #73 on downloads only, before climbing up to #15 the following week. It spent two more weeks in the UK top 40 at #28 and #40 respectively before dropping out altogether.

The single however went straight to #1 in Scotland the same week it peaked at #15 in the whole of the UK.

The song was voted number 9 in the NME top 50 singles of the year 2006.

Lyrics:

The told me if I write this song for them.

That they would cut my hair for free.

But that's not me no liberties.

The same record for the 16th time

Exact same set you did the last time round

Doesn't bother me we're in harmony.

* Astedwae ittlae ejaysdae

They're the cleverest blonde weekend.

Astedwae ittlae ejaysdae

I WISH everybody danced like them.

Split visions of a talkative therapy

It makes me bend away it gives me E

Doesn't bother me we're in harmony.

[Repeat *]

No low emotions rolling tonight

Young heavy hopefuls staying the night

So stick around and wait for the day.

Craziness kills lazyness N happiness

Takes bad bets no one gives a **** U see we're all out of our little heads.

Craziness kills lazyness N happiness

Takes bad bets no one gives a ****

You see we're all out of our,

All out of our,

All out of our little ****ing heads

Doo doo doo doo...

[Repeat *]

Can anybody dance like them

Can U tell me

Does anybody dance like them

Can U tell me

84. Lemar - It's Not That Easy

"It's Not That Easy" was the first single taken from British R&B singer Lemar's third album The Truth About Love.

Before the single's release, "It's Not That Easy" made the top 3 of the UK radio airplay chart and the top 10 of the TV airplay chart. The week prior to the single's physical release, "It's Not That Easy" entered the top 75 at #41 on downloads alone. In its second week on the chart, once the physical CD and vinyl formats were in store, the single launched Lemar back into the top ten of the UK singles chart, after his former single "Don't Give It Up" peaked outside the top twenty. "It's Not That Easy" peaked at #7.

This Al Green-esque track is the first, but not the highest TV Reality act in my countdown.

83. Regina Spektor - Fidelity

Regina Spektor (Russian: Регина Спектор) (born February 18, 1980) is a Russian-born American singer-songwriter and pianist. Her music is associated with the anti-folk scene centered on New York City's East Village.

Spektor's musical style has drawn many comparisons to fellow singer-pianists Fiona Apple and Tori Amos. However, Spektor has stated that she works hard to ensure that each of her songs has its own musical style, rather than trying to develop a distinctive style for her music as a whole.

She has become a well-known College Radio artist and this single peaked at USA#103 taken from her 4th album "Begin To Hope".

Lyrics:

(Shake it up)

I never loved nobody fully

Always one foot on the ground

And by protecting my heart truly

I got lost in the sounds

I hear in my mind

All these voices

I hear in my mind all these words

I hear in my mind all this music

And it breaks my heart

And it breaks my heart

And it breaks my heart

It breaks my heart

And suppose I never met you

Suppose we never fell in love

Suppose I never ever let you kiss me so sweet and so soft

Suppose I never ever saw you

Suppose we never ever called

Suppose I kept on singing love songs just to break my own fall

Just to break my fall

Just to break my fall

Break my fall

Break my fall

All my friends say that of course its gonna get better

Gonna get better

Better better better better

Better better better

I never love nobody fully

Always one foot on the ground

And by protecting by heart truly

I got lost

In the sounds

I hear in my mind

All these voices

I hear in my mind all these words

I hear in my mind

All this music

And it breaks my heart

It breaks my heart

Breaks my

Heart

Breaks my heart

82. Morrissey - You Have Killed Me

"You Have Killed Me" is the first single from the album Ringleader of the Tormentors by Morrissey. The single was released on March 27, 2006 and debuted at UK#3. The title track was written by Morrissey and Jesse Tobias. Morrissey said it would showcase the "marked difference in sound" brought about by the new influence of Tobias on Morrissey's work while Billboard magazine described it as a "simple, effective first single."

The song is a bizarre reference to Pier Paolo Pasolini's 1961 film, Accattone, about prostitution in the slums of Rome, as is shown in the first two lines of the lyrics ("Pasolini is me"/"Accattone you’ll be"). There is much speculation as to the meaning of this quote. Some fans believe that it is merely an example on Rome's influence on Morrissey whereas some believe that it is a reference to the loss of virginity, since Accattone is Pasolini's first film.

Lyrics:

Pasolini is me

'Accattone' you'll be

I entered nothing and nothing entered me

'Til you came with the key

And you did your best but

As I live and breathe

You have killed me

You have killed me

Yes I walk around somehow

But you have killed me

You have killed me

Piazza Cavour, what's my life for?

Visconti is me

Magnani you'll never be

I entered nothing and nothing entered me

'Til you came with the key

And you did your best but

As I live and breathe

You have killed me

You have killed me

Yes, I walk around somehow

But you have killed me

You have killed me

Who am I that I come to be here?..

As I live and breathe

You have killed me

You have killed me

Yes I walk around somehow

But you have killed me

You have killed me

And there is no point saying this again

There is no point saying this again

But I forgive you, I forgive you

Always I do forgive you

81. A-ha - Analogue

Single and album track "Analogue (All I Want)" was re-recorded and re-written from the first version produced for the album. "Minor Key Sonata" was the original version, and (like the rest of the album) was produced by Martin Terefe and mixed by Flood. Max Martin was brought in to turn "Minor Key Sonata (Analogue)" into a more commercially-friendly product - with a less surreal lyric, and catchier chorus. "Analogue (All I Want)" became a hit in the UK, and is the only track on the album not produced by Terefe. It made UK#10 at the end of January 2006.

Lyrics:

Come back, my darling one

I'm calling on you

The road ahead is long

And I must warn you

I wonder

Where did she go?

If I failed you

I tell you right now

All I want you to know; I love you

All I need is the time to show you

Come back, my fallen son

Don't let them fool you

Cos when the day is done

They'll never move you

Lay down your senseless pride

(Got more than you)

Put out your mournful tones

I tell you right now

All I want you to know; I love you

All I need is the time to show you how I feel

Feel

(Lay down your senseless pride

You travelled once too often, yeah)

I tell you right now

All I want you to know; I love you

All I need is the time to show you how I feel

All I want you to know I love you

All I need is the time to show you how I feel

(Come back, my analogue

I hardly knew ya

The high end sloping off

A thing of beauty

Take hold, my little ones

My minor key sonatas

Show forth your looping grace

A'ha was one of my early #1s of this year, a great comeback single from them, seems they never had a follow up after that

80. Killers - When You Were Young

"When You Were Young" is the first single from The Killers' sophomore album, Sam's Town (released October 3 in the United States, and October 2 in the United Kingdom). The song displays the band's move towards a more "American" musical style, as it is part of an album that was supposedly heavily influenced by the music of Bruce Springsteen. It has proven to be one of their most successful singles, so far peaking at # 14 on the U.S. Hot 100 (only Mr. Brightside peaked higher on this chart at #10 in 2004), as well as their only number 1 to date on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks. It is also their highest charting single to date in the UK and Australia, peaking at number 2 and 10 respectively. The song was nominated for the 2007 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Song", and the single's video received a nomination in the category of "Best Short Form Music Video".

Lyrics:

You sit there in your heartache

Waiting on some beautiful boy to

To save you from your old ways

You play forgiveness

Watch it now

Here he comes

He doesnt look a thing like Jesus

But he talks like a gentleman

Like you imagined

When you were young

Can we climb this mountain

I dont know

Higher now than ever before

I know we can make it if we take it slow

Let's take it easy

Easy now

Watch it go

We're burning down the highway skyline

On the back of a hurricane

That started turning

When you were young

When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes

And see the place where you used to live

When you were young

They say the devil's water

It ain't so sweet

You dont have to drink right now

But you can dip your feet

Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache

Waiting on some beautiful boy to

To save you from your old ways

You play forgiveness

Watch it now

Here he comes

He doesnt look a thing like Jesus

But he talks like a gentleman

Like you imagined

When you were young

(talks like a gentleman)

(like you imagined)

When you were young

I said he doesnt look a thing like Jesus

He doesnt look a thing like Jesus

But more than you'll ever know

79. Belle and Sebastian - The Blues Are Still Blue

"The Blues Are Still Blue" was the second single lifted from the Belle & Sebastian's The Life Pursuit. The track was released in April 2006 on Rough Trade Records, and is produced by Tony Hoffer. The single reached #25 in the UK singles chart.

Single Review:

'The Blues Are Still Blue' sounds like a great pop record that never was from, oooh, 1973; a little bit T-Rex, a little bit Bowie, maybe even a little bit Cockney Rebel, but actually not quite like any of the above. There's an easy clubbable kind of beat that rolls along with a swaggering insouciance, while Stuart Murdoch adopts an atypically sexy purr to deliver a neat pop meditation on doing your laundry, and how getting your whites and coloureds mixed up is a little like the muddle created when boys and girls get together. The only thing, it seems, you can effectively rely upon is that the blues will resolutely remain the blues.

Along the way, over its four brief minutes, we meet a suitably Murdochian cast of outsider hipsters, feisty girls, morally questing teens and can't-be-bothered cleversticks. All of whom come together to make 'the Blues Are Still Blue' a classic Belle And Sebastian single, pegged around their biggest and catchiest chorus this side of the Millennium.

77. Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces

Smiley Faces" is a song by Gnarls Barkley and is featured on their debut album, St. Elsewhere. It was released 17 July 2006 as the second single from that album in the United Kingdom.

In the music video, a music historian (played by Dennis Hopper) and an A&R executive (played by Dean Stockwell) are interviewed about whether or not Gnarls Barkley (the person) exists and if he's behind the music scene. The video shows musical acts and cultural events from the 1920s to the 1990s, with Cee-Lo and producer Danger Mouse in the background. The effect is similar to that of Woody Allen editing himself into archival film footage in Zelig.

The song entered the UK Official Download Chart on 3 May 2006 at number 152 and is climbed the chart until its peak at number 12 on 9 August 2006. It then entered the UK Singles Chart on July 16, 2006 at number 23 based on download sales alone, climbing to number 10 after the physical release was available. It was the follow up to Crazy and is the only Gnarls Barkley track to appear in my countdown.

Lyrics:

What did you do? What did you say?

Did you walk - or did you run away?

Where are you now? Where have you been?

Did you go alone - or did you bring a friend?

I need to know this - cause I notice when you're smilin'

Out in the sun havin' fun and you're feelin' free

And I can tell you know how hard this life can be

But you keep on smiley for me

What went right? What went wrong?

Was it the story - or was it the song?

Was it overnight - or did it take you long?

Was knowing your weakness what made you strong?

Or all the above - oh how I love to see you smilin'

And oh yeah - take a little pain just in case

You need something warm to embrace

To help you put on a smiley face

Hey, put on a smiley face

Don't you go off into the new day with any doubt

Here's a summary of somethin' that you could smile about:

Say for instance, my girlfriend she bugs me all the time

But the irony of it all is that she loves me all the time

I want to be you - whenever I see you smilin'

Cause it's easily one of the hardest things to do

Your worries and fears become your friends

And they end up smiley at you

Put on a smiley face

 loads of great songs so far, my faves that i can remenber are Rihanna, The Feeling, Morrissey , Sandi Thom & Beyonce

76. James Morrison - You Give Me Something

"You Give Me Something" is the first single by British singer James Morrison, which was released on July 16, 2006 (peaked at UK#5). The song is featured on his debut album, Undiscovered, which was released on July 31, 2006.

When James Morrison was in New Zealand, and appeared on the New Zealand Idol show, the two finalists asked Morrison what the meaning behind the song was, and Morrison said that it was intended to be a 'harsh love song', and the lyrics mean that the protagonist of the song does not love the person as much as she loves him, but is willing to give the relationship a try.

Single Review:

There's something special about James Morrison…He looks like a youthful Joe Cocker, and has a voice that starts arguments over whether he sounds more like Al Green or Otis Redding. Whatever, his voice is incredible, soulful and soothing.

The young fella from Rugbys been alive for just 21 years but his voice sounds like its been around for generations. His first single You Give Me Something will be released on July 17th followed by his debut album Undiscovered two weeks later on July 31st.

You Give Me Something is a spellbinding, bittersweet, bluesy-soul song about concealing true emotions in the early stages of a relationship, played mellowingly through an acoustic guitar and sung with a power and character of someone twice his age.

75. Will Young - Who Am I

"Who Am I" is a popular song co-written by songwriter and ex-Brother Beyond musician Eg White, and singer Lucie Silvas. It was recorded by Will Young and featured on his third album, Keep On. The track was released as a single on 24 April 2006.

The song entered the UK Official Download Chart on 12 April 2006 due to individual album tracks being available to download. It then entered the UK Singles Chart on 23 April at number 47 based on download sales alone. The following week it had moved up to number 11, after the physical release had become available. It is Young's first single to fail to reach the top 5 in the UK.

"Who Am I" was shortlisted for the Popjustice £20 Music Prize in 2006.

Single Review:

In answer to his question, Will Young is already one of pop's survivors. But the lyrics of this song also suggest he's a determinedly single-minded individual too.

This third single from Keep On is one of that excellent pop record's syrupy R&B-lite love ballads. Musically it starts simply, showcasing Will's voice, and builds inexorably to a lighters-aloft chorus replete with strings.

Lyrically though it's weepily intriguing. An intelligent examination of a relationship's end laced with regret, in it Will tells (presumably) his ex that number one comes first. "I always found a reason why I never put you first," he laments. "Who am I to tell you that I would never let you down... Who am I to tell you I'll always catch you when you fall? I wouldn't be myself at all." This declaration of single-mindedness must come like a hammer blow to whoever it was written about. Pity the poor boy - even Will's smile surely wouldn't console him.

And there was everybody's mother thinking Will was such a nice boy. Whodathunk?

73. Joan As Police Woman - The Ride

Joan Wasser (born July 26, 1970, in Biddeford, Maine) is a violinist and singer/songwriter in the indie rock world. Her best known album is titled Real Life. In addition to her stint with the Dambuilders, Wasser's resume includes live performances and studio work with Lou Reed, Tanya Donelly, Sheryl Crow, Dave Gahan, Elton John, the Scissor Sisters, Antony and the Johnsons, Joseph Arthur and Rufus Wainwright.

The Ride was the 2nd of 4 singles taken from "Real Life" and failed to make the UK#75.

Lyrics:

Starting now the wait is over

As long as you jump the ride

‘Cause I won't highway-walk forever

As long as you jump the ride

As long as you follow me

This is what I do, like I do

I've been on the ride before

It never stops at all

It never stops at all

You'll start your engines like a virgin

As long as you jump the ride

We'll cut the whip and lose the anchor

As long as you jump the ride

As long as you follow me

This is what I do, like I do

I've been on the ride before

It never stops at all

It never stops at all

As long as you follow me

This is what I do, like I do

I've been on the ride before

It never stops at all

It never stops at all

Don't you feel for us

That we're on the round and round?

Don't you hear

The endless motor sound?

As long as you follow me

This is what I do, like I do

I've been on the ride before

It never stops at all

It never stops at all

It never stops at all

A very good list of songs TIP!

Some slip under my radar but Sandi, The Rogues, Rihanna all great and I'm also very happy to see 'Moodswings' is somewhere in you top 100. I will watching everybody's charts to maul them if it's not present.

Not too keen on Morrissey tbh find him very bland and dull and Mikey, A-Ha had a followup single later on the year that just made top 40 :P

Henrietta was released on June 12, 2006 by Scottish band The Fratellis. It was their first UK top-40 hit, charting at number 19, on the chart released on June 18, 2006. It charted even higher in Scotland, going in at number 6.

Henrietta we got no flowers for you

Just these three miserable c**ts

sitting on the back seat banging on the off beat

we know you love us and you probably do

although you're husband may cut us

he's such an animal though everything is possible

give us a kiss and maybe we can go out

it's hard to miss you when you follow us about

buy us some shoes and maybe take us for cola

we'll get you there in some filthy big gondola

clean out the bank and bump off your daddy

you can come live with us among the has beens and the addicts

these are crazy times down at Costello music

you can answer the phone and talk nice anyway you choose it , come on

Dear Henrietta we're just three lonely boys

Though the girls love us we're so

into you incredibly we'd love to see you terribly

we'd love to hate you but we don 't have no choice

come be our wa ha ha ha

honey, honey three four one time once more

give us a kiss and maybe we can go out

it's hard to miss you when you follow us about

buy us some shoes and maybe take us for cola

we'll get you there in some filthy big gondola

clean out the bank and bump off your daddy

you can come live with us among the has beens and the addicts

these are crazy times down at Costello music

you can answer the phone and talk nice anyway you choose it , come on

71. Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill

"Harrowdown Hill" is a song by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and is featured on his 2006 album The Eraser. The song was released 21 August 2006 as a limited edition single from that album in the United Kingdom, peaking at #23 in the UK Singles Chart. The single's release follows Radiohead headlining the 2006 V Festival. A video for the song was released 31 July and had its first play on Channel 4.

Lyrics:

Don't walk the plank like I did

You will be dispensed with

When you've become inconvenient

In the harrowdown hill

Where you went to school

That's where I am

That's where I'm lying down

Did I fall or was I pushed?

Did I fall or was I pushed?

And where's the blood?

And where's the blood?

I'm coming home

I'm coming home

To make it all right

So dry your eyes

We think the same things at the same time

We just can’t do anything about it

So don't ask me

Ask the ministry

Don't ask me

Ask the ministry

We think the same things at the same time

There are so many of us

So you can't count

We think the same things at the same time

There are too many of us

So you can't count

Can you see me when I'm running?

Can you see me when I'm running?

Away from them

I can't take their pressure

No one cares if you live or die

They just want me gone

They want me gone

I'm coming home

I'm coming home

To make it all right

So dry your eyes

We think the same things at the same time

We just can’t do anything about it

We think the same things at the same time

There are too many of us

So you can't count

It was a slippery, slippery, slippery slope

It was a slippery, slippery, slippery slope

I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness

I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness

70. Jewel - Goodbye Alice In Wonderland

Goodbye Alice In Wonderland was a test promo single released from the same titled album. The song was (and video) released to radio early January 2006. Promotional singles were sent out to radio stations and television stations. However, the song was never picked up by the radio (some view this as intentional) therefore never charting within the US. The single was only released in the US (USA#80).

Some people also view the single as a double-A side to the single Again and Again due to the fact that promo singles were sent out containing both tracks, Goodbye Alice In Wonderland and Again and Again.

Lyrics:

Its four in the afternoon

I'm on a flight leaving LA

Trying to think about my life

My youth scattered along the highway

Hotel rooms in headlights

I've made a living with a song

guitar as my companion

Wanting desperately to be belong

Fame is filled with spoiled children

They grow fat on fantasy

I guess that's why I'm leaving

I crave reality

So goodbye Alice in Wonderland

Goodbye yellow brick road

There is a difference between dreaming and pretending

I did not find paradise

It was only a reflection

Of my lonely mind wanting

whats been missing in my life

I'm embarassed to say

The rest is a rock and roll cliche

I hit the bottom when i reached the top

but i never knew it was you

Who was breaking my heart

I thought you had to love me

But you did not

Yes, a heart can hallucinate

If its completely starved for love

Can even turn monsters

Angels from above

you forged my love just like a weapon

and turned it against me like a knife

you broke my last heart string

you opened up my eyes

So goodbye Alice in Wonderland

Goodbye yellow brick road

There is a difference between dreaming and pretending

That was not love in your eyes

It was only a reflection

Of my lonely mind searching

for whats been missing in my life

And growing up is not the absence of dreaming

Its being able to understand the difference between

The ones you can hold and the ones that you've been sold

Dreaming is a good thing

Cause it brings new things to life

Pretending is an ending

That perpetuates a lie

Forgetting what you are

Seeing for what you've been told

Truth is stranger than fiction

This is my chance to get it right

and life is much better

Without all of those pretty lies

So goodbye Alice in Wonderland

and you can keep your yellow brick road

There is a difference between dreaming and pretending

these are not tears in my eyes

they are only a reflection

Of my lonely mind finding

they are only a reflection

Of my lonely mind finding

i found whats missing in my life

69. Chicane ft Tom Jones - Stoned In Love

"Stoned in Love" is a dance track by Chicane (Nick Bracegirdle), with vocals performed by famed pop singer Tom Jones. It was released as a single on April 24, 2006.

The song is the latest in a series of genre crossover recordings for both musicians, Bracegirdle having recorded previous hits with Celtic folk singer Maire Brennan and rock singer Bryan Adams, and Jones having recorded the house music hit "Sex Bomb" with producer/DJ Mousse T. It peaked at UK#7.

Lyrics:

if you could see me here this way

Looking backwards from today

Would you do it all again...?

if i could roll it back to you

Just like lovers always do

i am stoned in love but not with you

Good luck…

Because we are not feeling stoned in love

it is how i am feeling now

i feel the love is made of stone

We are not feeling stoned in love

Good luck…

it's when i feel stoned in love

it's how i am feeling now

i feel the love is made of stone

Wait and feel the stoned in love

Quick and watch the past away

But we go upset with blames

i do it all again..as if i care…

Stoned in love but not with me

Oooooooo.....

You are stoned in love but not with me...

Good luck........

Because we are not feeling stoned in love

it is how i am feeling now

i feel the love is made of stone

We are not feeling stoned in love

Good luck…

it's when i feel stoned in love

it's how i am feeling now

i feel the love is made of stone

Wait and feel the stoned in love

Stoned in love…
