68. Coldplay - The Hardest Part

"The Hardest Part" is the fourth single from Coldplay's 2005 album, X&Y. The song was released to UK radio and download sites on 3 April 2006 and was released internationally on CD in Europe, Japan, Canada, and Australia in May and June 2006. The international version of the single was made available in the UK on 19 June 2006. In France and the French speaking portions of Belgium and Switzerland "What If" was released instead of "The Hardest Part", and a Belgium commercial CD featured the same B-side, "How You See the World" recorded live at Earls Court.

Like the previous single from X&Y, "Talk", was a tribute to Kraftwerk, "The Hardest Part" was a stylistical nod to R.E.M., who remain a great influential force to Coldplay. In fact, "The Hardest Part" resembled R.E.M.'s 1991 hit Losing My Religion so much the band almost left it off the album.

The music video for "The Hardest Part" was shot on 3 March 2006 in St. Petersburg, Florida at a yacht marina. The video is similar to Weezer's video for Buddy Holly, in that uses a clip from a short-lived 80s program "Attitudes" on the Lifetime network, and has the band digitally inserted. The band essentially plays beside a stage where an 84-year-old lady and her 25-year-old male friend put up an incredible act of athleticism, despite her age. Actress Linda Dano, who played "Felicia Gallant" on the soap opera Another World, is also featured via the Attitudes footage. The video was directed by Mary Wigmore. Another version of the video features a cameo from Chris Martin's father, Anthony Martin, but was never broadcast. It premiered on Wednesday, 22 March at 11:05 p.m. on Channel 4 in the UK.

67. Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

"When the Sun Goes Down" is the second single from Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys, released on 16 January 2006. The song, about prostitution in the Neepsend district of Sheffield, was originally known as "Scummy" and followed debut single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" to UK Number One. The track is featured on the band's debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, released the week after this single.

Original reports suggested its name would be simply "Sun Goes Down", but the full name was confimed on the band's website.

The song's video premiered on MTV2 on 21 December 2005. The song and music video inspired a longer film, named Scummy Man after a line from the song, using the same actors who appeared in the music video to tell the story of 'Nina', the nameless "that girl there" from the song.

Lyrics:

Who's that girl there?

I wonder what went wrong

So that she had to roam the streets

She dunt do major credit cards

I doubt she does receipts

It's all not quite legitimate

And what a scummy man

Just give him half a chance

I bet he'll rob you if he can

Can see it in his eyes,

That he's got a driving ban

Amongst some other offences

And I've seen him with girls of the night

And he told Roxanne to put on her red light

It’s all infected but he'll be alright

Cause he's a scumbag, don't you know

I said he's a scumbag, don't you know!

Although you're trying not to listen

Overt your eyes and staring at the ground

She makes a subtle proposition

“Sorry love I'll have to turn you downâ€

He must be up to something

What are the chances sure it’s more than likely

I've got a feeling in my stomach

I start to wonder what his story might be

They said it changes when the sun goes down

Around here

Look here comes a Ford Mondeo

Isn't he Mister Inconspicuous?

And he don't have to say 'owt

She’s in the stance ready to get picked up

Bet she's delighted when she sees him

Pulling in and giving her the eye

Because she must be ****ing freezing

Scantily clad beneath the clear night sky

it doesn't stop in the winter, no

Around here

They said it changes when the sun goes down

Over the river going out of town

What a scummy man

Just give him half a chance

I bet he'll rob you if he can

Can see it in his eyes that he's got a nasty plan

I hope you're not involved at all

66. Editors - All Sparks

"All Sparks" is a song by Birmingham's British Indie rock band Editors and is featured on their 2005 debut album, The Back Room. It was released 27 March 2006 as the fourth single from the album (UK#21).

It may be named after the band, Sparks, whose website is called All Sparks.

Lyrics:

You're answering questions that have not yet been asked

All sparks will burn out in the end

You burn like you're bouncing cigarettes on the road

All sparks will burn out in the end

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out in the end

You're casting opinions at people who need them

All sparks will burn out in the end

Well be careful angel, this life is just too hard

All sparks will burn out in the end

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out in the end

You burn like you're bouncing cigarettes

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out in the end

65. Jealousy - Lucy

Four years ago the UK was taken by storm by a phenomenal tune called “Starlight†by the Supermen Lovers.

At number 1 for four weeks and with sales of 3 million copies worldwide, this massive track introduced the supreme vocalist, Mani Hoffman (who also co-wrote the Starlight track) to a wider music audience.

Jealousy and their first single ‘Lucy’ is in fact a fusion of two highly successful French bands ‘Live Saver’ signed to Prozak Trax (the #1 French dance label) and featuring writer/producer Pierre Hinard (co-writer and co-producer of ‘Lucy’ and the massive single ‘Obsession’ by Aventura) and ‘Work to Beauty’ which featured Mani Hoffman on their successful Epic France released single entitled ‘Thing’

Pierre and Mani had very similar styles and tastes in music and decided after the success of ‘Starlight’ and ‘Obsession’ to work together on a brand new project which became the band, Jealousy.

The band are currently touring Europe in support of ‘Lucy’ – A potential #1 with its powerful bass line and fantastic string arrangement, also features up and coming singer-songwriter Sophie Delila who has worked with MC Solaar and Jamiroquai.

Single Review:

This is more like it. Sugary rubbish chart-chomping summer house with not one but four radio edits that don't outstay their welcome. In fact, by the time the inevitable eight-minute noodle (albeit with dead good tom-tom drums) arrives to disappear up its cute, dayglo-panted backside, you really will be too blissed out to care.

Though proffering lyrics that never bother to get much further than "Luceee, you're aaaall I neeeeeed, Luceeee", Jealousy are a Eurodance supergroup of sorts, combining the vocal talents of Mani Hoffman (previously of Superman Lovers) with producer Pierre Hinard and up-and-coming vocalist Sophie Delia on two K-Klass remixes, three remixes by Life Saver (an alter ego of Hinard) as well as the original radio mix. It all adds up to nigh on half an hour of cheery cluby dancey housey pop that, added to a few martinis and an outdoor mixing deck, you could make a party out of on its own.

Fair enough the summer's almost over and it's wet and cold outside but don't let that get you down. Lock yourself in your bedroom with Jealousy and before you know, it all those nasty emo boys with bad hair, tattoos and whining will be nothing more than a fading memory. Thank you, Jealousy.

64. Massive Attack - Live With Me

This stunning track featuring the soulful vocals of Terry Callier made UK#17.

Single Review

It's a shame that this first single release from Massive Attack in three years is lifted from a greatest hits package (Collected) rather than a forthcoming new album, but at least it's a small morsel for fans to get their teeth into. Some extremely evocative and rich vocals come courtesy of soul legend Terry Callier, who builds Live With Me to a mesmerising climax against a backdrop of lush, expansive strings and a rolling, hypnotic bassline. It's clear the band have lost none of their distinctive edge - let's just hope we're not in for another three year wait for more fresh material.

63. Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks

To date this Swedish trio are probably best known for the 2006 single "Young Folks" which featured Victoria Bergsman of The Concretes, and was a top 40 hit in the UK Singles Chart. It was also placed at number 2 in NME's 50 best tracks of 2006, pipped by "Over and Over" by Hot Chip.

Single Review:

Ever played that game in your local indie joint, whereby you have to come up with the strangest and the most mesmerizing collaboration that could happen betwixt different acts? Well a blend of Belle & Sebastian and Sonic Youth must be in any top three. Well, this expansive outfit have produced a song that means you don’t have to imagine what such a merging of sonic and summery sounds would produce. For the A-side, a whistling stroll makes for a playful feel and a yearning male and female vocal to and fro, helps the band cover the topic of loyalty in a silk blanket.

An ambient/folk B-side, Ancient Curse casts an eerie shadow over matters with the aid of a hauntingly hollow percussive element and low key vocals help to complete the mystic feel. Writers Block, the third album from this sojourning Swedish outfit, is released on the 14/08/06 and there is enough here to tempt you into taking on this adventure without leaving your home, well if you buy it on the net that is.

62. Fergie - London Bridge

"London Bridge" (USA#1/UK#3) is a pop-hip hop song co-written and performed by American singer Fergie for her debut album, The Dutchess (2006). It was released as the first single from the album, on July 18, 2006.

The song was produced by Polow Da Don (who produced The Pussycat Dolls's "Buttons") with lyrics by Sean Garrett, (who helped on the writing of Usher's "Yeah!"). Fergie describes the song as being "kind of like a punch in the face to let people know I'm coming out.. I've been getting way too into myself nowadays and I just wanna have fun with as many men as I can possible." The song is a club track that only lightly touches on personal lyrics about fame and celebrity ("It's like every time I get up on the dude/Paparazzi put my business in the news").

It was released to radio on July 13, 2006, however it was leaked on internet June 29, 2006. The music video premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on July 18, 2006 and peaked on TRLs countdown at number five. The song was released on iTunes on July 25, 2006. After only five days on iTunes it reached number one on the countdown.

It is amusing to note that the bridge featured on the alternative cover of the single is not in fact London Bridge but the Tower Bridge. This is presumably because the actual current London Bridge is of no particular architectural significance, and consequently many people confuse the two. This mistake is also made in the ending of the video for the song (British audiences have noted this after her video debuted in the UK). The use of this bridge has been said to be intentional many times by Fergie herself as well as people who worked on the video.

On most stations, a radio edit changes the subtitle (normally "Oh $h!t!" to "Oh Snap!", to prevent bleeping or blanking). This edit was also used in the music video.

Fergie performed the song at the beginning of 2006 MTV Video Music Awards's Pre-Show On The Rock. It was also performed during the second season finale of So You Think You Can Dance. Also, on the same show, a dance set to "London Bridge" was choreographed by Shane Sparks, and performed on July 19 by Travis Wall and Donyelle Jones.

61. Jamelia - Beware Of The Dog

"Beware of the Dog" is the second single release from Jamelia's third studio album, Walk with Me [1]. The single is notable for its sample of Depeche Mode's song "Personal Jesus".

"Beware of the Dog" was the second single from Jamelia to enter the UK top 40 on downloads alone. It was also the highest download only entry of the week and the only song to reach the top 40. The single has also been an airplay hit, reaching BBC Radio 1's A-list and peaking inside the top twenty of both the TV airplay and radio airplay charts. Upon its physical release, "Beware of the Dog" peaked at #10 in its second week on the charts, Jamelia's second top 10 hit from Walk With Me and her seventh UK top ten hit in total.

Jamelia has performed the track with UK rock band Feeder, at their November 2006 gig at the London Coronet. "Beware Of The Dog" has also been used in the advertisement for UK television network's Channel 4 show, Goldplated.

Lyrics:

Do you know how much you want it?

You're trying to be cool about it

You're trying to big about it

You're constantly just denying

You're like a moth to a flame

You hardly wane

But listen 'cos I know what I'm saying

He's trying to catch you in it

And then he'll back you in it

Cos he's just another girl addict

And if you give it away

You've gotta be crazy

Stop!

You better shake him off

Before he gets ya

(He's coming to getcha, he's coming to getcha)

Stop!

He'll only build you up

And then he'll getcha

He's dirty to the bone - beware of the dog!

I was damn near addicted

I got into trouble with him, I got in the bubble with him

Everything was just how he wanted

Oh but then I got wise

I got out of sight

So take me advise

Chorus x 2

I know you hear me

I know you hear me - I KNOW YOU HEAR ME!

Arr! Arr!

You better reach out and touch me!

(Reach out and touch me)

Chorus x 4

Beware of the dog...

Beware of the dog...

Beware of the dog...

Fergie? :o There's a shocker!

Beware Of The Dog is Jamelia's best single since 'Thank You'. SAY was bearable but really everything else she's ever released has been c**p.

Lots of good songs there, shame Voodoo Child isn't any higher, although saying that I don't think it'll make my top 100! Despite me listening to it loads.

60. Pipettes - Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me

Your Kisses are Wasted on Me" is the first single to make the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart for The Pipettes (UK#35). It was released on March 27, 2006 and available on CD, double 7" vinyl and digital download on Memphis Industries. The single was accompanied by another music video and garnered substantial airplay.

The girl-group trio from Brighton released the excellent debut album "We Are The Pipettes" which is well worth buying.

Review:

Polka dot dresses, 'Girl Power' and synchronised dance moves. It's not a Spice Girls comeback, it seems pop music has just got another saviour. Two minutes' worth of Summery 60s harmonies probably hasn't sounded quite this good since - well, the 60s (that's another one - Obvious Statements Ed). Keyboards and harmonies reach uncharted heights as the Brighton girls serve up some heartbreaking lyrics on splitting up. It seems The Pipettes have hit their stride.

'Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me' is sure to have even the clumsiest of sweaty 'indie' kids choreographing their own routine at the discotheque. With a live stage act looking like a scene out of Happy Days and killer melodies to boot, it'd be foolish to overlook the feelgood factor of 2006.

59. Robbie Williams - RudeBox

"Rudebox" is a single from musician Robbie Williams, taken from his album Rudebox. It is based around a sample from the song "Boops (Here To Go)" by Sly & Robbie. The single was released on September 4, 2006, although download purchases allowed it to reach number 30 in the UK Charts on September 3. After the release of the CD single, it went up 26 places to number 4 selling 24,821 copies, beaten by Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland's "Promiscuous", Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" and Scissor Sisters' "I Don't Feel like Dancin'". Although a relatively high chart position, Williams was mocked by sections of the tabloid press who said the single was a failure. He responded to the criticism by joking about it, telling an audience at his concert in Leeds on September 8th that the song was "number one... in Germany". He also made the comment "be honest" at the end of performing the song at Roundhay, possibly indicating that he didn't even like the song himself.

The track debuted at #1 on the German Charts and reached #1 on Downloads in the same country.

On October 19, Robbie performed the song (along with "Rock DJ") at the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City.

The song has caused controversy in the UK, on TV, radio and in the tabloids, due to the radical change in direction from most of Williams' other material, with The Sun newspaper claiming it was the "worst song ever".

Review:

Sometimes I wonder why I don't have time to sleep. So I did some investigating. It turns out that this article is this site's tenth review of a Robbie Williams single. Tenth! Stoke's most famous product seems to release an album every year. 2006 will see another, and Rudebox is the lead single from it.

So is this tenth opus any different to the radio-friendly but collectively borderline naff nine that went before? And what the hell is a Rudebox anyway?

Yes, it is different. He's gone electro. Sly & Robbie's funky Boops (Here To Go) sample provides the wall-shaking bass on which the rest of the piece hangs. And that's just as well - over the top of it we're treated to Robbie's lazy rapping. He sounds like a disinterested, stoned Shaun Ryder welded to a vocoder.

This release is really about the various club mixes by the likes of Chicken Lips and Soul Mekanik. They're fun. The lyrics aren't. "TK Maxx costs less, Jackson looks a mess..." we are informed. Such stream of consciousness rambles might have worked for Virginia Woolf, and Alison Goldfrapp has somehow got away with nonsensical lyrics for years, but Robbie doesn't for a moment cut it. And what's with the Gorillazesque cover art, complete with graffiti? There's nothing like trying, I suppose.

Forget this and go buy some Sly & Robbie.

I love that Pipettes song

58. Dirty Pretty Things - Bang Bang, You're Dead

Dirty Pretty Things is the band fronted by former member of The Libertines, Carl Barât. The formation of the band was announced in September 2005, after The Libertines had split up in 2004 due to a falling out between Barât and Pete Doherty.

"Bang Bang You're Dead" is a song by the band Dirty Pretty Things. It was released as a single on April 24, 2006 (UK#5) and was the first to be released from the band's debut album Waterloo to Anywhere. In 2006, it was used as the theme tune to the BBC series Sorted.

Lyrics:

I knew all along

That I was right at the start

About the seeds of the weeds

That grew in your heart

Self satisfaction for the factions

Who formed to tear us apart

Oh I gave you the Midas touch

As you turned round to scratch out my heart

Oh what did you expect?

Oh tell me what did you expect?

To lay it on my head?

So is it all upon my head?

Bang bang, you're dead!

Oh I'm so easily lead

Bang bang, you're de-e-ead!

Put all those rumours to bed

Bang bang, you're dead

I knew all along

But I was loathed to believe

There was nothing but spite

Fury and lies in the words that you weave

Bring our illusion to a conclusion

With all our unsold dreams

Put it to bed, kick it in the head

Oh won't they just let it be

Bang bang, you're dead!

Oh I'm so easily lead

Bang bang, you're de-e-ead!

Put all those rumours to bed

Bang bang, you're dead

Bang bang, bang bang you're dead

57. Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway

"Breakaway" was the first single (in North America, Latin America, Brazil and Australia only) and the fifth single in Europe (US#6/UK#22), from Breakaway, the second album by pop rock singer Kelly Clarkson. After her two under-performing releases beforehand from her debut album, "Breakaway" is considered by many to be her comeback single.

The single was co-written by Avril Lavigne, Bridget Benenate and Michael Gerrard and produced by John Shanks. It was originally written in part by Lavigne for her debut album, Let Go, but she did not release it as she did not feel the song suited her album at the time. As a result, it was handed to Kelly Clarkson, who recorded it–as a stopgap between her albums–for the soundtrack of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The single was then released in July of 2004, with not much expectations for it to become a big hit. In fact, Clarkson and her team were so convinced, that they were already planning a release for the first single off of her sophomore album, assured that Breakaway's popularity would wane by Fall. RCA records had already planned for her sophomore album to be released in December, with the first single out in October.

However, things began to slowly change. By August, "Breakaway" surprisingly entered the Billboard Hot 100 and slowly began creeping up the charts. It steadily grew to become one of the biggest hits of the Fall, when it finally peaked in November. Because of the conflict of "Breakaway"'s still climbing up the charts, RCA records decided to hold off of on releasing a single off of her upcoming album and officially made the song "Breakaway" the first single off of the album. They then decided to name her album Breakaway, to assure fans that the hit song would be included on the album. Because of the single's success, Clarkson's album was pushed up a month and was released in November 2004 at the height of the songs success. Although this song was not intended to be the first single, it eventually was considered that by both Clarkson and the general public, most of whom did not even realize that this was a soundtrack single.

Lyrics:

Grew up in a small town

And when the snow would fall down

I’d just stare out my window

Dreamin’ of what could be

And if I’d end up happy

I would pray

Trying hard to reach out

But when I tried to speak out

Felt like no one could hear me

Wanted to belong here

But something felt so wrong here

So I prayed I could break away

I’ll spread my wings

And I’ll learn how to fly

I’ll do what it takes

Till I touch the sky

And I’ll make a wish, take a chance, make a change

And break away

Out of the darkness

And into the sun

But I won’t forget all the ones that I love

I’ll take a risk, take a chance, make a change

And break away

Want to feel the warm breeze

Sleep under a palm tree

Feel the rush of the ocean

Get on board a fast train

Travel on a jet plane

Far away and break away

Buildings with a hundred floors

Swinging round revolving doors

Maybe I don’t know where they’ll take me but

Gotta keep movin’ on movin’ on

Fly away break away

I’ll spread my wings

And I’ll learn how to fly

Though it’s not easy

To tell you goodbye

I gotta take a risk, take a chance make a change

And break away

Out of the darkness and into the sun

But I won’t forget the place I come from

I gotta take a risk, take a chance make a change

And break away

Breakaway

56. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California

"Dani California" is the first single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ninth studio album, Stadium Arcadium. The single was first made available at the iTunes Music Store and then was officially released on May 2, 2006. The international radio premiere was April 3, 2006, when Don Jantzen from the Houston radio station KTBZ-FM, played "Dani California" continuously for his entire three hour show.

The single debuted on the The Billboard Hot 100 at number twenty-four and peaked at number six, becoming the band's third single to hit the top-ten on the chart. In addition, "Dani California" became the second song in history to debute at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart, after R.E.M.'s 1994 hit "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", and also charted at #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts.[2]. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, kept from number one position by Gnarls Barkley's song "Crazy".

In the Billboard review of Stadium Arcadium, which dismissed the album as indulgent, "Dani California" was described as "one of the things that truly grabs attention upon first listen and worms its way into your subconscious, where it just won't let go, as much of Anthony Kiedis' catchiest melodies do."

Lyrics:

Getting born in the state of Mississippi

Papa was a copper and mama was a hippie

In Alabama she was swinging hammer

Price you gotta pay when you pick the panarama

She never knew that there was anything more than poor

What in the world? What does your confidant take me for?

Black bandana, sweet Louisiana

robbing on a bank in the state of Indiana

She's a runner, rebel and a stunner

Coming everyway saying baby whatcha gonna

Cooking down the barrel of a hop and a forty five

Just another way to survive

California rest in peace

Simultaneous release

California show your teeth

She's my priestess, I'm your priest

She's a lover baby and a fighter

Should of seen her coming when it got a little brighter

With a name like Dani California

Devils gonna come but I was gonna warn ya

A little lonely, she was stealing another breath

I love my baby to death

California rest in peace

Simultaneous release

California show your teeth

She's my priestess, I'm your priest

Who knew the other side of you?

Who knew that all this tired to prove

Too true to say good bye to you

Too true to say say say..

Was the baiter gifted and a made her

One for the now and eleven for the later

Never made it up to Mineesota

North Dakota man was a gunning for the quota

Down in the valley she was saving the best for last

It only hurts when I laugh

Goin' too fast..

California rest in peace

Simultaneous release,

California show your teeth,

She's my priestess, I'm your priest

California rest in peace

Simultaneous release,

California show your teeth,

She's my priestess, I'm your priest
