11 UHSTING ◼ Maria Rodés 'Seguramente Fui Yo’

Why 'Seguramente Fui Yo’?

I sent Tom Morello ft. Phantogram - Driving to Texas which was then sadly vetoed because I really like the somewhat apocalyptic vibes and it definitely moves you in a sentimental way. You also have the grand guitar solo at the end which I think is delivered by Tom Morello. I then opted for Maria Rodes - Seguramente Fui Yo. This song has a unique sound which I believe should stand out in the contest. This folk sound is unlike any I've heard in nowadays music. I like the simple chord progression I-VII done repeatedly in A Aeolian which gets you yearning for more. The main melody is hexatonic though the entire first theme becomes the usual heptatonic later on with the accompaniment. I love the choice of instruments in this song, for instance the lack of pitch when strumming the guitar (I think?). Then goes to a celebratory second theme which pleasantly surprises, and it has undergone modulation to A Ionian. I love the vocals are cheering in the background, making way for the fiddles to perform their part which is similar to the vocal melody in the first theme. Overall I think the song is simple yet effective. The folk sound in particular is a huge push factor for my choice in Nuggets, and the song is also modernized with different experimentations to new sounds and unusual modulations and unique interpretation of the chord progression.

It was a really difficult to select the 12 pointer. I was flipping between the top 2. They both have drawn out deep emotions really well, which is something that rock genre or related has always tried to achieve. The Machine Is Burning slightly edges with a slow but powerful buildup. The emotions slowly sink in and I really like the flow.

That commentary is just exquisite

'The Machine Is Burning (Live)' has some serious stans with its third twelve points tonight — and now it is right back into second place. Gang of Youths continue to pull away, and previous leader, MASTER BOOT RECORD, drops out of the top five.

Please forgive me and make necessary corrections if my music theory analysis is incorrect :kink:

That was an excellent choice. Didn't expect it to be you Uhsting for some reason haha. A very sweet track.

Oops doing pretty bad so far.

Mm. I understood some of the words in that uhsting commentary. :kink: (I had to rack my brains for a while to come up with any commentary more insightful than 'it gud lol', can you tell I'm not well versed in music theory)

Starting to accept that my song is probably just bombing and it's not only a case of the early voters being unfriendly oops

12 SEVENSEIZE ◼ Origami Angel 'Noah Fence'

Why 'Noah Fence'?

‘Noah Fence’ is one of many great tracks off Origami Angel's recent album, which I felt deserved some exposure here - energetic pop punk with charming lyrics about rejecting religion in favour of his love interest

My 12 points had to go to The Hotelier, a band I'd already been familiar with but this tormented track sounds as great as ever, with its powerful instrumentation and passionate vocal delivery, especially on that chorus <3

It's been largely ignored tonight but 'Among the Wildflowers' managed to catch the attention of SevenSeize — and a lovely twelve points. 'how will i rest in peace if i'm buried by a highway?//' breaks into second place after scoring fairly consistently so far.

13 WHOODYSSEY ◼ Gang of Youths 'in the wake of your leave’

Why 'in the wake of your leave’?

To be honest, I wouldn't have sent them if I'd known it was going to be added to Radio 1 just a week or so after! laugh.gif And I definitely was not expecting their album to make the Top 10. But alas, it did fit in the rules when it was sent.

It's definitely one of my favourite songs of the year, from an equally fantastic album. That chorus is just euphoric.

'ZOMBIFIED' is an absolute banger! Despite some of the lyrics, the lead singer is absolutely *not* a MAGA/anti-woke type. Instead, he's just a bit annoyed at some stuff he posted when he was younger, and I think he's grown a lot since. It's been good to see them transform from pop-punk to metal in the last few years!

Oops — after leading for a few rounds now, WhoOdyssey pushes themselves into second and KennyHoopla into first place.

Also, do I want to look into the lead singer of Falling In Reverse? A few people have mentioned him in their comments...

I think it's best to not look too much into the history of the Falling In Reverse singer based on what I have heard about him oops.

Thanks Savan and Whoddy, finally crawling into double figure points at least :kink:

The Gang Of Youths song is pretty good and all but ngl I do kind of hope it doesn't end up winning here as it does feel far too mainstream for this contest (I'd have thought that even before the chart success / radio playlisting).

Gang of Youths was one I knew pre-contest (they were on my radar after being sent to BJSC a while back) so not a discovery or anything, but definitely a good'un

16 JADE ◼ BRUIT ≤ 'The Machine Is Burning (Live)’

Why ‘'The Machine Is Burning (Live)’?

I finally broke the 10 minute barrier for one of my entries in a song contest! I've never shied away from longer entries in the past, but even so, that's a long time for a song to keep your attention. Especially if an instrumental! But 'The Machine Is Burning' did just that. It drew me in with the initial misleading chilled out intro. Soon the passionate banging away at all sorts of instruments, from the necessary Nuggets guitars to an organ, really moves the song along in an electrifying way, that continues to cover new ground right until the final minute. It's a memorable piece of post-rock brilliance that ignited such a strong first reaction from me that I thought it was bound to stand out. I couldn't let something like the lack of Spotify presence (the only one in this edition to not be on there!) hold this back. I wasn't phased by the live performance aspect either, one of my previous winners 'War' by Brutus was also live, in fact the setting only added to the epic feel. It's magical.

The song that stole my heart and top points had a double-digit duration. I was instantly drawn in with the dark, atmospheric production and strong female vocals. My ears particularly pricked up at the 1:30 mark when she began singing in a made up language. This then led into some seriously towering guitars. It already felt like a big, standout, rush - but there was still so much more to uncover. The instruments just kept coming - with a flute sounding almost as pretty as the softer vocal parts, swiftly followed by the most beautiful piano segment. The song kept looping back to the made up language part so I had a Google mid-way through the song, where I found out about it - also discovering that it translates to "Let us dance around the fire" - which swiftly added some further triumphant context. It is a stunning rollercoaster of a prog-rock song that I definitely won't be forgetting any time soon. Especially as it was accompanied by a haunting visual feast!

is a song even a song if it is less than ten minutes long?, Jade asks. 'The Machine Is Burning (Live)’ has been doing fantastically so far — and I do think it was at a disadvantage not being available on streaming services. It was also a complete accident that this was chosen as the final song for the running order — what an epic finale.

Those twelve points push Cellar Darling into the top ten.
