December 17, 200618 yr ARIA Chartifacts (ARIA.com.au) For the first time in 1 ½ years, the same artist has the top of both the Australian National Singles and Albums’ Chart. Australian Idol 4 winner Damien Leith has remained at the top of the Aussie chart for a third week with his track “Night of My Lifeâ€, and his album of songs that he sang during the show has jumped from 3 to 1 this week, and it has also achieved some more platinum status. Last week when the album debuted, it did so with a Platinum certification. This week it reaches 4xPlatinum, as do other album, which I mention below in the albums section. But it is the first time since June 2005 when the single “Don’t Phunk With My Heart†and the album “Monkey Business†were both at the top of the charts, that an artist has achieved such a feat. Also with Shannon Noll and Natalie Bassingthwaighte moving from 7 to 2 with their version of “Don’t Give Upâ€, and both Damien Leith and The Twelfth Man holding down the Top 2 spot on the albums chart, it’s the first time since 12-July-2004 that there has been such an Australia double act on both charts. Back in 2004 it was (Singles) Paulini and Shannon Noll and (Albums) Hillsong Church and John Butler Trio. In fact it’s the 100th time since January 1965 that an artist has been at the top of both charts, and the fourth time that an Australian Idol Performer has done so. Guy Sebastian did it in December 2003, then Shannon Noll in February 2004, and finally Paulini in August 2004. The highest new entry this week comes from Perth’s John Butler Trio. Their new single “Funky Tonight†comes in at No.15, and also becomes his highest charting single. Previous Top 50 entries have been “Zebra†(Dec 2003, No.22), “What You Want†(Aug 2004, No.29) and “Something’s Gotta Give†(Dec 2004, No.47), all of which came from his former No.1 album “Sunrise Over the Seaâ€. (March 2004). Six of last weeks eight debuts all move up the charts this week, mentioned above was Shannon Noll’s “Don’t Give Upâ€, but also there is Nelly Furtado’s “Say it Right†(23 to 18), “Pictures†by Sneaky Sound System (32 to 24) to give them their highest placed single to date, Crazy Frog’s “Last Christmas†(38 to 30) and 2Pac’s “Pac’s Life†(42 to 34). With no major new releases for the next couple of weeks, there might only be a few movers up the charts, so it’ll be pretty dry on new entries until mid-January 2007. Damien Leith becomes the 15th Solo Australian Male Performer to top the Albums Chart, as his compilation of performed songs from Australian Idol 4 moves from 3 to 1 this week. It’s the 541st No.1 album in this country since January 1965, and also becomes the 122nd Australian Performed Album, plus makes Damien Leith the 66th Australian Performer to reach No.1. As I mentioned above, his album goes from Platinum to 4xPlatinum this week, and other album to move up in Platinum Status include “Boned†by The Twelfth Man (2x to 4xPlatuinum) “Dancing in the Street: The Songs of Motown 2†by Human Nature (2x to 3xPlatinum) and picking up an extra Platinum status this week are “Siempre†by il Divo, “Black Fingernail, Red Wine†by Eskimo Joe and “The Sweet Escape†by Gwen Stefani. The only major move up the charts this week is from 48 to 21, and that’s from Steve Irwin’s little girl Bindi, as her “Bindi Kidfitness†jumps a massive 27 places to almost land in the Top 20 albums.
