Posted April 12, 20223 yr not a ,,du du du du" drop .... the "da da da" feels like a lazy hook. Really hate it when chorus go Da Da Da Da Da, there's nothing worst Wordless choruses are fine but in this the 'Da da da' definitely feels lazy, both lyrically and musically. In anticipation for Nathan Dawe’s upcoming single with Ella Henderson, what songs from recent memory can you recall where the hook line was a variation of “Da Da Da” or something similar? Are you able to give an example of a good use and a bad use of the trend? Here’s one from a few years ago that possibly restarted this idea (though of course it had been done many times before too); KE2SSftvFU4 Of course if you want to go much further back in time, there was this iconic #1 from 1999; 68ugkg9RePc Share another example, good or bad, of this usage in modern dance music.
April 12, 20223 yr Worst one I recall is Calvin Harris ft Rihanna - This is What I Came For. How did an amazing songwriter like Taylor Swift write such a no-chorus song!!!! The chorus basically was: You, ooh-ooh, you, ooh-ooh You, ooh-ooh, you, ooh-ooh You, ooh-ooh, you, ooh, ooh, ooh You, ooh-ooh, you, ooh-ooh You, ooh-ooh, you, ooh-ooh You, ooh-ooh, you, ooh, ooh, ooh Becky Hill - My Heart Goes is one of the worst from recent times
April 12, 20223 yr Imagine sitting down and deciding on whether it’s a da da or na na or oo oo or nu nu song? Weight on their shoulders right there…
April 12, 20223 yr Author ^^ My debut BJSC entry right there! Sometimes it has worked, other times it hasn’t. Why is this?
April 12, 20223 yr Worst one I recall is Calvin Harris ft Rihanna - This is What I Came For. How did an amazing songwriter like Taylor Swift write such a no-chorus song!!!! I see This Is What You Came For as the perfect example of how to do this type of chorus well. The ‘you’s blending really well with the the varied production is what makes it sound soo good. Where as for Crazy What Love Can Do I’m actively bored in the chorus as the production is so lacklustre and even less exciting than the verses.
April 12, 20223 yr Author Personally it never ever works :D it's always a No! I disagree in some cases, but, in the majority of cases you are right. Here’s another I thought of which is a sample of a song by ATC, featuring lots of “la la la la la” lyrics in the chorus, but the chorus also has a lyrical element to it too which makes it less of an irritation; w8mBplMtwJ8
April 12, 20223 yr I think on 'Head & Heart' it worked so brilliantly. Maybe with the big success of that, is why so many people have tried to emulate it since?
April 14, 20223 yr Author Here’s another one I was reminded about when it came on shuffle just now (albeit a sample); dmhqDfsOVV4
April 14, 20223 yr Not a dance song, but hearing it on the radio again today reminded me of the 'du-du du-du-du-du' bit in Little Mix's 'Sweet Melody' which I find annoying. The rest of the song is OK though. Edited April 14, 20223 yr by TheSnake
April 15, 20223 yr Off the top of my head, one good one is La Bouche - Be My Lover ...surprised that was barely a hit in the UK!
April 15, 20223 yr Author Dance version of Tom's Diner Oh yes of course, plus Pour The Milk. Someone help me out, I’m convinced that every current pop girl chasing the latest trends has done a song like this as a single, and I’m sure that I’ve heard one by Charli XCX and another by Mabel but I can’t place them. Any thoughts?
March 9, 20232 yr Author Time for another one, this has been chosen as the UK’s Eurovision entry for 2023; rRaVGKk4k6k
