The band was formed in Scotland by founders Gary Lightbody and Mark McClelland both from Northern Ireland. They formed in 1994 as "Shrug" and the band started by performing gigs at Dundee University and the surrounding pubs before changing their name to "Polarbear" in 1995. The band released their first EP track "Starfighter Pilot"

In 1997 the band changed their name and became "Snow Patrol" due to legal threats from an American band with the same name as "Polarbear" led by Eric Avery, the former bassist of Jane's Addiction.

During this time, Jonny Quinn, also from Northern Ireland, joined the band as permanent drummer. The band then released their next EP track "Little Hide". They then released a follow-up single "One Hundred Things You Should Have Done in Bed" which was a minor hit. Their first MTV interview was in 1998, and they briefly appeared on a Channel Four documentary about Jeepster Records which concentrated mainly on Belle and Sebastian that same year. Snow Patrol released 2 albums; "Songs For Polarbears" in 1998 and "When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up" in 2001.

Also in 2001, Gary formed with a group of Scottish musicians to perform as another group "The Reindeer Section", who so far have released two albums. Gary also performed vocals on a single.

Snow Patrol were later dropped by the record label. Soon after guitarist Nathan Connolly joined the band and then later they signed up to Polydor label. They gained success with their song "Run" which debuted at number 5 in the UK singles chart. This single was from their third and their most successful album "Final Straw" which was released in 2003. It also features other chart toppers such as "Chocolate", "Spitting Games" and "How to be dead".

The band also released "Final Straw" in America 2004 and sold about a quater of a million and became 26th most popular British album of the year beating Coldplay - Parachutes and Muse - Absolution :o

In 2005, co-founder Mark McClelland left the band. He was then later replaced by Paul Wilson. They also confirmed their keyboardist Tom Simpson who has been with the band for a lengthy time as an offical member.

Since then Snow Patrol have appeared on music festivals, live concerts such as live 8. They have even supported U2.

In 2006 Snow Patrol released their first single "You're all I have" from their forth album. Also features from this album is their biggest hit "Chasing cars"

Snow Patrol sucess will continue to grow around the world.
