May 19, 20222 yr I’m very aware I have weird taste - also, Javine was robbed! 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible 2009 Jade Ewen - It’s My Time 2003 Jemimi - Cry Baby (actually a good pop song) 2022 Sam Ryder - Space Man 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You 2011 Blue - I Can 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag 2014 Molly - Children of the Universe 2018 Surie - Storm 2021 James Newman - Embers 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life 2016 Joe and Jake - You’re Not Alone 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me
May 19, 20222 yr Wow our entries have been so awful this millennium. 2022 Sam Ryder - Space Man 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You 2011 Blue - I Can 2014 Molly - Children of the Universe 2021 James Newman - Embers 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back 2018 Surie - Storm 2009 Jade Ewen - It’s My Time 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If 2003 Jemimi - Cry Baby 2016 Joe and Jake - You’re Not Alone 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me Everything below SuRie is different levels of horrific. Scooch is OK after a few drinks in a cheesy gay bar though.
May 19, 20222 yr 2022 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN (I really don't think we've sent better than this since the great Gina G/Katrina/Imaani trio of the late 90s - it ticks every box, I liked the studio version straight away - importantly it was an instant earworm - but Sam absolutely elevated it in every way with his performance and staging, it's really wonderful) 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life (so joyous and nostalgic, I completely get why it flopped and the studio version was way better than live performance - this was the last entry prior to Sam that I remember infiltrating popular culture properly, I heard a lot of teenagers listening to it out of phones ) 2011 Blue - I Can (The juries were too tough on this, it's anthemic and was one of the best songs that year and should have been top ten) 2009 Jade Ewen - It's My Time (She was so good, and this was very classy) 2014 Molly - Children Of The Universe (Another entry that I'd say deserved a hell of a lot better than it got, the production needed to be a bit beefier in the chorus perhaps and Molly was very nervous on the night, but it's a really good track) 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) (I voted for this in the national final, no regrets, it's a Eurovision classic - so bad it's good is much better than being dull and forgettable, which was our standard mode until this year) 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back (a lovely ballad, by a good singer!) 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible (the rap sounded amateur and didn't fit, but Lindsay was great) 2016 Joe and Jake - You're Not Alone (this was one of our best in the last few years I'd say, it's nothing incredible but it's quite One Direction-esque and deserved a little better) 2003 Jemini - Cry Baby (the studio version is good enough, the live was obviously awful) 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath (I really think this could have done ok for us, at least with the juries! I reckon James would have been more comfortable performing it on stage than Embers and it is very similar to the sort of thing we have in the charts these days) 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free (relatively pleasant in studio form, but this was never going to work out) 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me (likewise) 2021 James Newman - Embers (I like the studio version of this, but can't argue with its placing for the live performance, he is a very nice guy though and didn't deserve double zero) 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again (the first step into the wilderness years for the UK, it's Steps-lite with an unfortunate title but catchy) 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You (A GREAT singer and performer paired, unfortunately, with a very pedestrian song imo) 2018 SuRie - Storm (likewise, I absolutely adore SuRie and she has a fab voice, but Storm feels so generic and half-baked with that basic Spotify playlist filler production that was all the rage at the time. I hope she gets another go in the future with a better song, especially as she had that stage invasion) 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You (a very bizarre internal selection, it feels like a song that might have come through a UK national final for the lols but this was never going to do anything in the contest) 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire (I really never got into this!) 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love (so boring, surprised it's not one of our many bottom fives) 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me (In the 1980s this might have been passable to advertise Pontins, but in Eurovision 2010 it was so out of place) 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us (UK on autopilot by this point, it's an X Factor winner's coronation song) 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If (boring again, Andy's a good singer but this was not an interesting song)
May 19, 20222 yr Excellent 1 2022 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN Very good 2 2011 Blue - I Can 3 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back Good songs (all underperformers) 4 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life 5 2016 Joe and Jake - You're Not Alone 6 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You Decent (but overrated in my view) 7 2014 Molly - Children Of The Universe 8 2009 Jade Ewen - It's My Time Not bad 9 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire 10 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You 11 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible Meh 12 2003 Jemini - Cry Baby (this was actually a bit of a bop but sunk by the performance) 13 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath 14 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me 15 2018 SuRie - Storm Poor 16 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) 17 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free 18 2021 James Newman - Embers 19 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If Embarrassing 20 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again 21 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love 22 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me 23 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us
May 19, 20222 yr At first I read the thread title as 'rate the UK entries' and I was about to declare 10's, 10's, 10's across the board! 2022 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN (our lord and saviour, we have no choice but to bow down) 2011 Blue - I Can (the juries should've been banished after they ranked this near the bottom in 2011 yet had Italy first purely to keep them around) 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life (this and Daz's two submissions to the Belarussian NF deserve the results that Zdob și Zdub have) 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) (they gave EVERYTHING, hearing Malta give this 12 points is where my life peaked) 2009 Jade Ewen - It's My Time (QUEEN, just so classy and the last time we could feel proud to be British before last Saturday) 2014 Molly - Children Of The Universe (oh Molly, where did it go wrong. I can't be the only one who started booking non-refundable hotels in London for May 2015 after first listen of this?!) 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You (robbed of a top 10 placing, I get that the song isn't that instantly exciting but the vocal and the staging were amazing) 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back 2018 SuRie - Storm (the stage invasion of this is winner worthy) 2016 Joe and Jake - You're Not Alone (was my favourite in the NF that year, yes it's basic but also very catchy) 2021 James Newman - Embers (a tune and I won't hear otherwise) 2003 Jemini - Cry Baby (an iconic track) 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire (bit of a bop but docked a couple of places for being bandwagon-jumping) 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath (losing this to Covid...meh) 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me (fine for what it is) 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love (a pleasant enough song, but not one I go back to much at all so have better memories associated with the songs above) 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us (the 2019 season was fun shouting "BIGGER" all the time and it was fun having a night out with Michael Rice, but it's very basic and you can see why John Lundvik gave it away. No surprise it won the NF, but the other two songs would've both been more interesting options) 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You (kinda find it fun now but seeing the premiere of this as our entry only a year after Molly....there were no words) 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me (just a bit cringe and not in a good way like Daz & Scooch manage to be) 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free (just a bit boring) 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If (the one entry of ours that would've been worthy of nil points, you know a song's a stinker when it's boring without even being a ballad. Terry Wogan selecting this as a wildcard in the national final is the worst of his crimes) That was tough because basically Andy is the one blemish amongst what are otherwise the best set of entries of any country this millennium (ok maybe it's only down to about Javine that I'd really go back to and play out of choice these days)
May 19, 20222 yr Author 1 2022 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN 2 2014 Molly - Children Of The Universe 3 2011 Blue - I Can 4 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) (guilty pleasure, catchy) 5 2009 Jade Ewen - It's My Time 6 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life 7 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You 8 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back 9 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love 10 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible 11 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free 12 2003 Jemini - Cry Baby (only for the audio/music video version) 13 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again 14 2016 Joe and Jake - You're Not Alone 15 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You 16 2018 SuRie - Storm 17 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath 18 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me 19 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire 20 2021 James Newman - Embers 21 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me 22 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If 23 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us The last 4 might as well be joint last although I did initially chart Andy's but not very highly or anything lol. Don't care for most of the second half though up to Nikki. Engelbert for how old soul sounding at least had some charm to it. Edited May 19, 20222 yr by Roba.
May 20, 20222 yr I'm not familiar with the first few so I'm not going to do a full rank (even Jessica Garlick oops), the earliest one I can confidently recall is Scooch and I think I've heard the Daz Sampson one too, then I don't remember Andy at all either but I do remember everyone from 2009 onwards. Sam Ryder is easily the best, my 2nd favourite is unironically Electro Velvet (I know it's naff but I maintain it is naff in a fun way), Blue would be 3rd, Scooch 4th and frankly I have no desire to ever hear any of the others again. A handful of the others rise to the level of 'ok' but that's all (I think I ranked Joe And Jake in my top 10 of their year so I guess they'd probably complete my top 5 but that's a very distant 5th). Was never a fan of the Jade Ewen song despite its success, and Molly's song was fine but very overrated, I don't rate it in the list of good UK entries as most people seem to. The absolute worst of the ones I know/remember is definitely Josh Dubovie.
May 20, 20222 yr if I were to give them all stars out of 5: ***** 2022 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN (finally someone overhauls Electro Velvet, obviously the best by being the only truly great song in this lot) **** 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You (one of the few with a bit of good personality and fun that fits in with Eurovision songs I put on repeat which is why it's one of the few 21st century British entries I ever have done so with, shame the live performance let it down) 2009 Jade Ewen - It's My Time (this did deserve to win at the time, at least it stood out as a rare top 10 for us) *** 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life (slight dodgy vibes from the performance aside, this has a fun cadence to it) 2011 Blue - I Can (manages to sound slightly epic at times) ** 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire 2018 SuRie - Storm (the best track we sent between EV and Sam Ryder which made the last few years REALLY tough) 2014 Molly - Children Of The Universe (overrated really) 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath (would have at least been mildly competitive like 'Never Give Up On You' rather than getting lost like Embers) 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back * 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again 2003 Jemini - Cry Baby 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) (we should have collectively blanked that this ever happened) 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me (god I love Bonnie but she sounded awful on stage) 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free (genuinely embarassing that we sent this guy in 2012) 2016 Joe and Jake - You're Not Alone (the nadir of forgettable tracks in the 10s decade) 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me (eh, a bad song but not quite irredeemable) 0 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If 2021 James Newman - Embers 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us (these two were deserved last placers, we went from unfortunate songs to genuinely horrible and generic tracks) god I cannot wait to be filling rankings like these up with songs I actually like
May 20, 20222 yr I can only rate them according to how they did in my charts, and what a lot of acts with "J" names! That's where weve been going wrong! The fab: 2022 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN (1) 2014 Molly - Children Of The Universe (1) The very good: 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back (5) 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free (5) 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me (10) 2011 Blue - I Can (10) The Good: 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life (12) 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You (15) The OK: 2003 Jemini - Cry Baby (47) 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath (55) 2009 Jade Ewen - It's My Time (56) 2016 Joe and Jake - You're Not Alone (57) 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) (60) 2018 SuRie - Storm (63) 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire (65) 2021 James Newman - Embers (68) 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love (73) 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If (74) The Bland: 2000 Nikki French - Don't Play That Song Again (-) 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible (-) 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me (-) 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You (-) 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us (-) So 5 deserved nil points, 10 deserved right-hand scoreboard points, 2 deserved left-hand scoreboard, 4 deserved top 10 result (2 of them did in the popular vote, the other 2 were so old nobody took them seriously) and 2 deserved to win (poor Molly!)
May 20, 20222 yr 2002 Jessica Garlick - Come Back 2014 Molly - Children Of The Universe 2022 Sam Ryder - SPACE MAN The holy trinity for me, hopefully it's not 2034 before we can add to this group! 2005 Javine - Touch My Fire 2011 Blue - I Can 2009 Jade Ewen - It's My Time 2001 Lindsay Dracass - No Dream Impossible 2017 Lucie Jones - Never Give Up On You The above average, apart from Jade they all deserved a bit more love in the final rankings. 2003 Jemini - Cry Baby 2007 Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) 2000 Nicki French - Don't Play That Song Again Ironic stanning. 2020 James Newman - My Last Breath 2016 Joe & Jake - You're Not Alone 2018 SuRie - Storm 2021 James Newman - Embers 2008 Andy Abraham - Even If 2004 James Fox - Hold On To Our Love 2019 Michael Rice - Bigger Than Us 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free 2013 Bonnie Tyler - Believe In Me mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 2015 Electro Velvet - Still In Love With You 2006 Daz Sampson - Teenage Life I can't even ironically stan these, just embarrassments. 2010 Josh Dubovie - That Sounds Good To Me That the BBC would deem this an acceptable entry when it wouldn't have even passed the audition stages in Belarus or Moldova. Shockingly terrible.
