X Factor: New champ but Shayne still reigns

Chris Osuh

FEBRUARY DOUBLE: ShayneSHAYNE Ward will tonight celebrate a year at the top - as the title of X Factor winner passes to a new pop hopeful.

The 22-year-old from Clayton knows only too well the hopes and fears of Leona Lewis and Raymond Quinn as they go head to head in a live showdown.

Shayne's popularity means he enjoys a jetset career a million miles from the bargain bin failure of predecessor Steve Brookstein. But will it continue once he loses the crown?

The M.E.N has learnt Shayne is recording his new album in Sweden, where his self-titled debut was a no.1 hit. He has also snatched the top spot and performed in Japan, China and South Africa, in between visits to South Korea, Hong Kong, Norway, Dubai, Miami, New York and LA.

In the US, Shayne has recorded with the Pussycat Dolls' producers and turned down deals to model for Calvin Klein, Abercrombie and Fitch and Gillette, because he didn't have time.

Back home, he has chalked up some impressive records - his debut single, That's My Goal, became the fastest- selling download in September, while he was the first artist to perform at Downing Street when he sang for Gordon Brown at a No.11 party.

Considerably richer than he was just 18 months ago, when he sold shoes in the Arndale, the former St Gregory's RC High pupil has snapped up a new pad in London and bought a new home for his mum in Manchester.

Shayne could even find himself one half of a "showbiz couple" as long-term love Faye McKeever, 20, carves out an acting career.

But it hasn't been all highs. Days before he won X Factor his mum, Philomena was arrested and faced charges of involvement in a pub brawl. Charges have since been dropped.

Stand By Me

In July, the third single from his album, Stand By Me, limped in the charts at No.14 position.

And in September, Shayne had an operation to remove career-threatening nodules from his throat, and was unable to speak for two weeks.

A source close to the star said: "At the moment he's singing brilliantly and finishing off his new album which will be released early next year. He is also preparing for his arena tour.

"International success has opened a whole new dimension to his career and he will definitely be around for a while - Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh have still got huge faith in him."

Shayne said: "It has been a fantastic year for me since winning X Factor. The show is an amazing platform for new talent and I am grateful to all my fans who have supported me.

"I am really looking forward to coming back to Manchester to perform."

Shayne plays the M.E.N. Arena on Friday, February 9 and Saturday 10, 2007. £25. To buy tickets, call 0870 060 1768 or book online.

Poor Shayne has been totally snubbed by Simon Cowell and the X factor - I hope he can sell out arenas - he's been away from public consciousness for ages - and now people are flocking to worship at the shrine of Leona.

Well Leona is just as talented as Shayne, if not better in my opinion. Actually I would like to see a duet between them.

It's good news that Shayne is coming back in the new year, I am really keen to hear his new material to listen for progression since his debut, 2nd albums by reality stars are known for a change in direction, and i'm keen to see which direction he goes in. I would personally like to see him try to market himself as the UK's answer to Justin Timberlake. ^_^

I certainly think he needs to come up with a new direction but he'd be much better trying to find his own sound instead of being a carbon copy of someone else. The same goes for Leona. We already have Mariah Carey we don't need another one.

Yeah, he could easily be the UK's JT, given the right material and imagine. Louis and Simon just game him MOR Westlife songs to sing and that is not something someone at his age should be doing. He's not Daniel O'Donnall

Personally, when he was on the X Factor I thought he was very good. He could sing any type of music and pull it off, something Leona simply cannot do imo. He seems to be a good dancer as well, as I remember when he sang 'Rock your body'. ^_^

He is playing about 5 sell out nights in the Point in Dublin next month :o :o

Glad to hear Shayne is on his way back with his new album. Hopefully he's got his throat problems sorted out now and it will all be plain sailing for him next year :D

I think I'd like to see him do a duet with Leona as well. Could be good. They've both got very good voices :)

Who says we don't need another Mariah? The more the merrier for me!

I hope they have given him better material for his 2nd album. I only liked one of his singles from the first album and that was "No promises". I thought the other songs were poor.
I really like Shayne...I'm looking forward to hearing his second album :D

i look forward to his new material, i hope he changes direction in his music.

Only really enjoyed 'No Promises' from him ^_^

I love No Promises  hate all the rest
