Everyone who's into Indie/Alternative music should own a copy of "Psychocandy", it's the law....

JAMC were certainly one of the greatest bands to ever come out of Scotland; Arab Strap, Mogwai and The Delgados are up there also...

Yeah. You should get both really. Psychocandy is essential listening, but you need to hear their singles too.

'Upside Down' is my favourite song by them.

cool

the singles one is 4.99 at hmv.co.uk at the moment so might get that.

then again it would be good to get everything on cd/dvd like that echo and bunnymen one. (just started playing the cd now, however dont know what song im on) . no doubt warners special marketing dept will re-issue jamc at some point like that

Even if they do. A fiver for all those quality songs is a must. That goes for anyone reading this thread who doesn't have it!

And when they do, they need to get that Echo and the Bunnymen compilation as well....

mine was £8.99 the other week.

have most all their albums/eps and a considerable amount of singles etc. Seen them 4 times live, including a very cool invite only small record release party performance in Seattle for Munki. Easily one of my top 5 bands.

not sure what else to say... am happy to answer any questions etc if you want. Other bands to check out if you like this are My Bloody Valentine, Curve, Lush, Ride, Swervedriver, and more resently Black Rebel Motorcycle Club...

...and Slowdive. Definintely Slowdive. Mind you, most of what you've listed there is shoegaze. All good though.

thought slowdive was on my list... i guess not.

JAMC were one, if not the main originator of shoegaze... it's not very mellow like many of their followers but the effects (reverb) was something they started...

S'pose. Have you heard any "nu-gaze" stuff like The Early Years, Serena-Maneesh and Cyann & Ben? Very good.

Actually, I'd say the main originators of Shoegazer was Cocteau Twins to be honest, they were doing effects with guitars a few years before JAMC. Cocteaus are Scottish too....

really? without looking up the dates i would be very surprised if JAMC came after the Cocteau Twins...

Not familiar with their EARLY work either, but JAMC are widely credited with originating the movement...

First JAMC single "Upside Down" - circa 1984

First Cocteau Twins Album - "Garlands" - circa 1982....

Check it out mate.... The band formed in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1980... Their early stuff is much more harsh and primitive than the later material, it must have been an influence on Jim and William, they just took it to another level of noise...

I think you'll find that the likes of MBV, Slowdive, Ride, Lush (whose first album was produced by Cocteaus' Robin Guthrie...), etc have far more in common with Cocteaus than with JAMC in terms of general style, but JAMC certainly did play a part in these bands' evolutions...

Dunno who you've been talking to, but on this side of the pond it's generally accepted that Cocteaus are the main originators of 'Shoegaze' and 'C86'...

Shoegaze yeah. I'd have thought C86 was more about Postcard Records than the Cocteaus....maybe.

in the end i decided to get the 21 singles collection.

wonder if there is also a band called jesus and the mary chain

I thought that the J&MC were sort of the godfathers of shoegaze (what with all the feedback they used on Psychocandy) but the main band to kick start it all off was My Bloody Valentine. The Mary Chain were too rock n roll to be shoegazers.

One of the best gigs I ever went to was one put on by the Melody maker in the early 90s and the bands that played were:

J&MC

My Bloody Valentine

Dinosaur Jr

Blur (Pre- Modern Life is Rubbish)

Brilliant!
