Oh and The Coctaeus had nothing to do with C86. Orange Juice maybe but really it was an NME inspired media creation. Most of the bands at the start of it had nothing to do with each other. And a lot of the bands on the C86 compilation didn't even use jangly guitars.

Singles collection for me, then the defining debut album!!! :D.

They remind me of a poor mans Stone Roses

Nonsense... I dont see where the comparison even comes in.... Both bands played loud guitars... errrm, that's it.... -_- Might as well compare The Cure to Slayer in that case....

!!!!!!!!!

What utter nonsense.

In other news, I just heard a demo by a Texas band called Ringo Deathstarr (excellent name!) who do a fantastic impression of PsychoCandy-era JAMC.

Check em out - http://www.myspace.com/ringodeathstarr

One of the best gigs I ever went to was one put on by the Melody maker in the early 90s and the bands that played were:

J&MC

My Bloody Valentine

Dinosaur Jr

Brilliant!

btw Dinosaur Jr's new album is out in spring.

so J Mascis is supposed to be an alt rock god then?

i dont really know where he/the band fits in to things (apart from he is on the last mew alb). if nirvana is at the top of the genre is he/they supposed to be above or below Lemonheads?

Dinosaur Jr are way above Nirvana.

The new album's really good too.

same for lemonheads?

The comparison was made with Ian's voice in most Stones stuff to the singers in this band...

To me Dinosaur Jr is one of the bands who came before Nirvana like the Pixies and Sonic Youth. Freak Scene is one of the greatest singles of all time.

The lemonheads weren't really grunge - they just rode on in on the same wave as a lot of early 90s guitar bands. Weren't they going before Nirvana got going?

Still don't really see it to be honest... Ian doesn't really sound much like Jim... Well I suppose the fact that neither of them could really actually sing is the only similarity.....

Correct... Both Dinosaur Jr and Lemonheads predate Nirvana.. Lemonheads first album is something like circa '86 and they have a different vocalist to Evan Dando at this time, not to mention a far harsher, punkier sound than that which would eventually come along in albums like "It's A Shame About Ray", "Come On Feel The Lemonheads", "Car Button Cloth", etc when Dando took over the singer/songwriter duties...

I would say Lemonheads and Dinosaur were both of the Boston College Rock scene, which was totally different to Seattle Grunge.... You're talking about musical movements which are almost half a continent apart....

Dinosaur Jr are way above Nirvana.

In terms of music, definitely... In terms of creating a Cultural/Zeitgeist phenomenon which inspired a generation, Nirvana were acres ahead of Mascis and Co, like it or not.. We all know it should have been Dinosaur/Pixies/Sonic Youth that got all the fame and whatnot, but unfortunately that aint how it worked out.... It's a bit like the situation you have now with the whole "Gothic Rock" thing, instead of Cristina Scabbia and Lacuna Coil stomping the world, we have Amy Lee and Evanescence....

Yeah, I meant in terms of music.

I also don't see any similarity between Ian Brown's voice and Jim Reid's. Definitely one of the strangest statements I've read in Buzzjack history.

nevermind Dino Jr from that list and replace with Pavement :)

If you liked Athlete's first album, you'll like Pavement.

Brilliant band who should have been HUGE!!!.

not to be rude, but athlete have nothing in common with pavement or vice versa.

that statement should read - if you like guitar indie - you'll like pavement. period.

I have to agree there. Pavement are a million times better than Athlete, first album or not.
