September 24, 20222 yr I used to be really eager for Kim Petras to make a breakthrough, but after everything that happened I don't feel quite so enthusiastically about that as I did. :(
September 24, 20222 yr But is it cos of Sam dueting with Kim Petras? is that whats interesting people? cos I cannot see why suddenly people are interested in Sam Smith, people have never been, I may sure all the Karens bought the debut album at Tescos but don't think Sam has the hardcore fanbase... Sam actually has a big TikTok following! 5m followers. One of their videos featuring the Unholy sound clip, which was uploaded on 28th August, has 6.4m likes and 40.7m views. Absolutely massive for a song on that platform. The song has been omnipresent on TikTok for weeks and is used in a countless number of videos that have millions of views. Overall it features in 361,500 videos to date - this level of exposure is something that labels/artists dream of happening! Remember the controversy regarding Halsey’s So Good, and her label wanting it to have traction on TikTok before releasing it? It has been over 3 months since that song came out, and it has been used in 16,400 TikTok videos. That’s less than 5% of Unholy’s reach. Unholy really has captured people’s imaginations. A lot of the popular videos using it are “thirst trap” style videos, but there’s also some humorous ones & dance trends. It’s the perfect storm & it’s definitely not a surprise to me that it’s blown up on streaming! It was pretty much inevitable. As for my feelings on the song - I mean, having seen numerous TikTok videos using it, I totally get why it’s caught on. That chorus is ludicrously catchy. I wouldn’t say I love the song, but it’s certainly stuck in my head! I’m pleased for them that they’re having such massive success. It’s always good to see anybody present themselves with unapologetic confidence, it seems like Sam is in a great place right now. Kim Petras - it’ll be wild to see her go from having a #100 hit in the UK to a #1! :o
September 25, 20222 yr This isn't too bad. Kim's part is definitely the best thing about it as Sam's voice ain't all that and is off putting for me. Very surprised it's going to be #1 though. This year has been a surprise for some artists that we thought weren't going to get a hit again.
September 25, 20222 yr Why is this song so catchy- 🙀 no but fr this sounds less messy than what I thought it was gonna be from the snippet :o both of them sound great in this (even if Sam sounds like a goat giving birth as per, they just sound more tolerable with this production 😅)
September 25, 20222 yr I was expecting this to be #1 in todays update, not #2. I hope it overtakes in tomorrows update and it would help a lot if the song had a video
September 25, 20222 yr I have no idea what to make of this, it’s all over the place OTT production but at the same time feels like there’s actually something missing from it?!!! At least it’s better than a dreary ballad comeback. Really surprised it is doing so well though, I thought Sam was pretty much over.
September 25, 20222 yr This is a weird one for me too as the execution is pretty messy but I still find myself being intrigued. I think it's mainly due to the dark production - that sounds pretty unusual for a potential #1. I would prefer it to the last couple of #1s tbh
September 25, 20222 yr If Ed Sheeran is releasing on Friday, this will be Sam’s only chance of getting #1
September 25, 20222 yr Not necessarily, Ed’s Pokemon track may not be pushed as much as a regular single from him.
September 26, 20222 yr i've not and won't listen to this but i don't imagine this will be a song that sits well in either careers.
September 26, 20222 yr This is clicking with me on a 2nd listen a bit more. Some of Sam's parts are still a little jarring but it's not as bad as I thought tbf.
September 27, 20222 yr A lot of the popular videos using it are “thirst trap” style videos Thought you were referring to a new subgenre of trap music before I looked up what 'thirst trap' meant! Edited September 27, 20222 yr by TheSnake
