Er they've already had sustained success on 'TERF Island' for quite a while since coming out with their biggest hit being a collab with a trans person. If that was going to be an issue it would have manifested by now surely.

I know iTunes is sort of dead but Apple need to sort out their review system because Sam's album has 2.5 stars from 54 reviews and most of the 'reviews' are from trolls and homophobes who haven't bought the album. The Apple Music one has 1* from 7 reviews...

I like it but can’t see myself playing it much outside the album. Also don’t think it’s the next official single as Sam was seen recording a video before Christmas and there has been no mention of a video for Gimme.

The single could be I'm Not Here To Make Friends as Sam is performing it on Graham Norton's show on January 27th

Yes and they've been dragged by the tabloids for their appearance and all kinds of stuff for their trouble. It's not like it's particularly come out after a period of either Sam or Kim being publically well-known and/or openly trans to the GP; plenty people will have seen Unholy initially as the first comeback from 'a guy they remember' featuring some new woman artist without a clue that either of them are trans.

Idk, the rhetoric out there for trans & NB people is pretty unpleasant right now so I'm just speaking from experience to an extent. I'd be up for them flipping the trend but there seems to be a lot of backlash and suspicion being directed towards trans folk and anyone who bucks traditional norms right now. Not necessarily from pop superfans but from casuals and people influenced by some of the attack articles that are coming out in the general pop culture sphere. Now that the headlines have come out and more people KNOW that this was a track by an NB artist and a trans woman the test will be if the GP are there for follow-ups. (I hope so!)

Anyway besides that now I've heard the track I don't think it's as bad as some of you did buut it definitely doesn't have an Unholy-like earworm hook. Still, possibly it has potential on tiktok if they can get a section of it to pick up traction.

The "gimme" hooks feels like it belongs to a different song; I don't particularly like it, but it's definitely the most interesting part of the song, the rest is just very meh.

They get the most horrid abuse/vitriol on a daily basis. Yeah "Unholy" is a hit, but it doesn't take away the abuse/bullying Sam gets constantly.

Just listened and it’s okay. I find the gimme gimme gimme etc bits a tad annoying but it may mellow in time. It’s definitely a more interesting direction for Sam’s music than I would have expected after their first two albums so I’m here for the continued experimentation with their sound.

Not disputing that and obviously that's awful, just saying that objectively it doesn't look like it's caused much damage to their 'sustained success', they've had 4 top 20 hits since they came out (plus 'In The Lonely Hour' still gets extremely healthy catalogue streams, has been a mainstay of the top 100 pretty much the entire time since its release with no sign of any downturn since 2019). That's about as much sustained success as you can expect from anyone in the current era of songs mostly having to rely on TikTok virality to blow up aside from those by the biggest A-Listers.

I don't think it was exactly an obscure fact before 'Unholy' either? Wasn't it in the news quite a bit when the BRITs changed their entire category format in response to their complaint? Idk maybe 'Unholy' will have put off some of the casual audience but it also proves they can appeal to a new audience if they want to...

I do notice that Heart has not (yet) played 'Unholy' while continuing to play several of their older songs so I guess they think it's unsuitable for their audience which may be at least partly because of it featuring a trans artist. (Or maybe it's just not a bland enough song for their playlist lol).

Cannot get this out of my head, I really hope it catches on and can be a hit for Sam et al!

^ What is this? An interlude? Sam is barely even singing in it.
I agree with the comment that said it sounds like the Mr Bean opening theme.
There are 2 more interludes on the standard 13 track version:
  • Hurting Interlude is 18 seconds
  • Dorothy's Interlude is 8 seconds.
