Posted April 6, 200619 yr Hey, I was just wondering if anybody had the physical singles sale only chart? It would be interesting to see how different it is from the integrated and download only charts, especially this week with Gnarls Barkley getting to no.1. Thankyou in advance! April 7, 200619 yr Author wow, a big difference between the two charts then, a lot higher new entries and morrissey no.1!! The physical charts starting to look awful without downloads, a lot better with them in, in my opinion! thanyou for this Mikey
April 7, 200619 yr Thanks Mikey. Great chart I prefer it when we have high new entries - look how high DM is compared to #12.
April 7, 200619 yr Yes but some people that download the singles would go and buy them if there were no downloads!
April 7, 200619 yr Author Yes but some people that download the singles would go and buy them if there were no downloads! You just have to look at the massive decline of the physical singles market over the past 6 years to see thats not true. The time of the physical single as a mass marketing tool has passed, as did cassettes and vinyl before it. People today want to be able to sit at home at any time of the day or night and buy the singles they want. Why give up that simplicity and go back to buying in a shop? Times are changing, you have to give up the idea that by restricting a consumers choice it will encourage them to back an outdated medium. I'm 20 and I already don't know anyone who doesn't have an MP3 player, either as a stand alone or as part of a phone. No one I know still buys physical singles and hasn't for years. Surely its a good thing to get people involved in music no matter what the format?
April 7, 200619 yr Thanks for posting that Mikey, i usually do it but i haven't bought musicweek for a few weeks.
April 8, 200619 yr And what if a computer break? A physical single is better you get it on hand go home and listen to it, in the car and everywhere.
April 8, 200619 yr And what if a computer break? A physical single is better you get it on hand go home and listen to it, in the car and everywhere. A CD can be damaged as well! And you can burn a CD whenever you want, and listen to it at home or even in the car! ;)
April 8, 200619 yr Downloads are really starting to make a difference now! I remember when downloads were first included they didn't make much difference at all to the top ten (but did to the lower half of the top 40). Poor old Depeche Mode, eh? Still at least the Wacko Jacko re-releases aren't doing as well. I'm a Morrisey fan, but I'm glad You Have Killed Me didn't make number one- I think it's one of his weakest singles. Also, at the end of the day, the combined chart is much more accurate a reflection of what people are buying than the 'physicals only' one.
April 8, 200619 yr Author And what if a computer break? A physical single is better you get it on hand go home and listen to it, in the car and everywhere. It doesn't matter if my computer breaks, I have all my music in my MP3 player so all I have to do is download the software onto any computer and I can get all of my music back immediately. There are also websites now available where you can store all your MP3 files in case of such a break. Also now some newer cars are coming with MP3 players installed. This will become common in the future as more and more people get MP3's. Also an MP3 player is sooooooooo much more adaptable than just a CD player, you can take ALL your music around with you wherever you want to go, in a box which is getting smaller and smaller, as opposed to a CD player where you have to cart around a player the at least the size of a CD and all your CD's. There's no point basing an arguement for CD's on ease of use because MP3's are infinitely easier to use.
April 8, 200619 yr Musicweek is so expensive though -_- and its not always in every shop! will buy it occasionally if there's something to read in it.
April 8, 200619 yr I will always be a buyer of physical singles, and I can't see why they can't be avalible aswell as downloads for as long as music is around (ie FOREVER!) for people who preffer to own their music on a physical format. I occasionaly download songs, but personly I find them quite pointless, ok there 'easy' but thats about it..
