'Watching The Detectives' by Elvis Costello is excellent. Indeed his entire singles output from 1977 to 1980 is very good. During that time he also produced the first Specials album (which is also very good). The band have been in the news today following the death of lead singer Terry Hall.

Aled Jones - Walking In The Air

It's kind of obligatory to mention that contrary to popular belief Aled didn't sing on the original Snowman animation, but the actual singer, Peter Auty got left off the credits of the 1982 film and then completely replaced by Aled by the time it was decided to release the main song as a single in 1985.

Jimmy Boyd - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (peaked at #3)

A very fitting christmas song was chosen by the random number generator as we sneak into Christmas Eve, and the big event is nearly upon us. This one has an interesting chart run too, 8-3-8-8-8-8. I've decided to do a 25 day calendar, so there will be one more post on the big day, probably in the early hours, as Santa is doing his rounds in the UK (or possibly slacking off and kissing Mommy?), and probably from a slightly tipsy me, so excuse any typos that creep into my post tomorrow.

This isn’t the original of the song is it?

According to Wikipedia it is yeah. Apparently he recorded it in July 1952 and it was a Billboard number one in December 1952. There was also a 1952 version by Spike Jones, and 1953 versions that charted in the UK alongside Jimmy's by the Beverly Sisters and by Billy Cotton and his Band. Apparently the Roman Catholic Church tried to ban it, as they missed the point of the song comepletely and though it was about adultery, so Jimmy had to go to his Archdiocese and explain the song to them, after which they lifted the ban.

Er well let's hope we finish on a slightly better song then :kink:

The random number generator chose a 90s million-selling classic, and appropriately for this year it has a connection to Neighbours, so hopefuly that counts as a slightly better song.

December 25th

Well I did initially think I might abandon the random element for Xmas Day and end with whatever happened to to be Xmas number one this year, on the assumption it'd be a popular choice, but in the event I think my Buzzjack membership would probably be rescinded if I did that, so I left the choice up to random.org's random number generator, as I did everyday all month, and I think we finish on something pretty good anyway.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this thread. Whatever you are doing today, and whoever you are spending time with, in person or on Zoom, I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

Just catching up with this… a largely great selection of songs as it happens. Absolutely loving the discovery that Dame Edna recorded a definitive version of the Neighbours theme
