Bono to receive honorary knighthood

Virgin Net News

U2 frontman Bono is being awarded an honorary British knighthood for his services to the music industry and humanitarian work.

Bono will receive the honorary award from the British Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland, David Reddaway, in a ceremony in Dublin shortly after New Year's Day.

A spokesman for the Dublin-born singer, whose real name is Paul Hewson, said he was very flattered to receive the award.

In 2003, Bono was presented with the Legion D'Honneur by President Jacques Chirac on behalf of the French government for his contribution to music and campaigning work.

In 2005, the singer was voted Time Person of the Year in recognition of his work promoting justice and equality.

A spokesman said Bono was particularly pleased, especially if the honour, like the French award, opens doors for his campaigning work against extreme poverty in Africa.

The rock musician, who follows in the footsteps of fellow Dubliner Bob Geldof in receiving the award, will not be entitled to the title 'Sir' as he is not a British national.

The British Embassy said the agreement of the Irish Government was sought and granted for Bono to be given the award.

Geldof received the award in 1986 after raising awareness as well as millions of pounds for struggling third world countries through the Live Aid event. Along with Geldof, Bono was instrumental in ensuring the recent Live 8 concerts were a massive success.

British honours are granted by The Queen, on advice from the British Government, and previous non-British recipients include Bill Gates, Placido Domingo, Rudolph Giuliani, Steven Spielberg and Simon Wiesenthal.

Do you think Bono deserves this honorary knighthood or not?

Things like this are absolutely not important to me I'm afraid so I'm probably not the right person to answer this question

I think there are a lot of people out there who do a lot for others...why would Bono be the one who get's this???

I don't think he should've accepted an award off the Queen. Here in Ireland he is getting a tough time about it. Hardly rock n roll is it?
