It's time! A return to normality in many ways, 2022 has seen many exciting releases. Soon, I'll be counting down my 300 favourite songs of the year, though that countdown won't begin just yet. A few other countdowns will be happening beforehand. This is what to expect, in order:

- Favourite TV shows of the year (sorted by genre)

- A brief look at my favourite movies of the year

- Hit 300 Awards: acknowledging various aspects of my music listening this year that aren't covered by my song and album countdowns, including Artist of the Year

- Top 10 EPs

- Top 40 albums

- Top 300 songs

A reminder of the EOY Hall of Fame. Last year, The Kid LAROI became the first artist to top both the album and song countdowns on more than one occasion, in fact doing it two years in a row! He can't make it a hat-trick on the album countdown this year, but can he retain his crown on the singles?

A good place to look to see what's contending for #1 this year is, of course, my #1s list for 2022. Benson Boone scored the most chart-toppers this year, with four, and the longest running #1s were I'm Good (Blue) by David Guetta & Bebe Rexha and Before You by Benson Boone, which spent three weeks each at the summit. As always, there will be more to add to this by the time the songs countdown starts (and no, STAY isn't eligible again!).

TV is up first! I've made a couple of tweaks to the categories this year to better group particular shows. These are the categories and the winners from last year (or, for the new categories, what they would have been if I'd used this format last year)

Returning Drama: Outer Banks

New Drama: Ginny & Georgia

Comedy (Sitcoms / Panel): Motherland

Discoveries: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Soaps: Coronation Street

Quiz Shows: Michael McIntyre's The Wheel [Game Shows #1]

Entertainment: Gogglebox [Reality Shows #3]

Competition Shows: Big Brother (US) [Reality Shows #1]

And a brand new category: TV Star of 2022! A top 10 of my favourite presenters, personalities and actors of the year.

I have grouped similar shows together, e.g. the civilian and celebrity versions of Big Brother, as well as the normal and All Star versions of Drag Race (though both shows remain separated by country).

Thank you all! Will be doing my best to keep up with everyone's own countdowns as well of course

TV: Soaps

ZAeEPXK.png1uDcZQJ.pngxy46d2w.png

1 Coronation Street

2 Emmerdale

3 EastEnders

Once again, Coronation Street reigns supreme at the top of the soap list. It's the soap that always grips me the most, even in times where there are fewer big storylines running. This is because it gets even the quiet scenes spot on, where characters may just be having a drink in the Rovers. Every conversation is worth listening to because the characterisation is spot on, whether they're a comedy character (Kirk, Mary) or heading the biggest storylines of the year (Abi, Toyah, Max), or somewhere in between like the iconic Dev. Toyah in particular has been one of the central characters this year, through Imran's death and the uncertainty of whether she was responsible or not. Georgia Taylor played this expertly and delivered some of the best performances of the year! I'm also addicted to Fiz and Tyrone's chemistry even if the storyline sometimes ventures into silliness (in fact, it's sometimes all the better for that!), and Max's current radicalisation storyline is hard-hitting and terrifying. Corrie remains at the top of its game!

However, I think my individual favourite storyline of the year comes from Emmerdale. It's a comfortable second again this year, but Faith's cancer storyline was a masterclass in writing and acting from all involved. Losing a character as iconic as Faith, played incredibly by Sally Dexter, was going to be hard, but the emotions were dialled up to 11 as she took her own life before the cancer could get her. It's a storyline that, in some ways, hit close to home this year, played superbly by some of the best actors in the soap - Jeff Hordley (Cain), Lucy Pargeter (Chas), Natalie J Robb (Moira) and of course Sally herself. The soap also excelled with its storm storyline, as OTT as it was, and Marlon's stroke broke my heart. Mark Charnock is deservedly sweeping awards for his fantastic portrayal.

It's been a bumpy year for EastEnders. I actually stopped watching when the soap schedules changed; it clashed with Emmerdale each night and I didn't care to catch up on it for about a month, but with new producer Chris Clenshaw now in charge, I picked it back up and the soap has been taking big strides to improve itself. Storylines such as Lola's tumour and Amy's self harm have been brilliant and a true reminder of what EastEnders is capable of with its strong cast, and finally, it's a show that feels like watching again. It still has improvements to make - the "kitchen sink" scenes veer into cringe over realism still - but it's on the right track for the first time in ages and at this rate, my ranking next year will be much more competitive for the first time in a while.

6 Celebrity Lingo | Series 1

7 Beat the Chasers | Series 5

8 The Weakest Link | Series 1

Light entertainment has firmly found a place among my TV viewing this year as I've become SUCH a sucker for a good quiz show. Michael McIntyre's The Wheel was dominant last year and came so close to snatching the win again - it's still brilliant viewing and I laugh every single episode through the genius casting of the celebrity guests (Rustie Lee!!!) and Michael McIntyre's comedic timing - but a new format captured my eye this year. Lee Mack hosted The 1% Club, which didn't test general knowledge, but instead it focused on logic and common sense. It made for a refreshing hour each week and I loved playing along, and Lee Mack was an incredible choice of host.

Family Fortunes with Gino D'Acampo continued to be car crash viewing in the BEST way, and The Hit List remains the one show I think I'd actually do decently on (I'd apply and the categories would all involve songs from the 70s though I swear). Another great new format came in the form of Ant & Dec's Limitless Win, where contestants climbed a ladder of money by answering questions with numerical answers. Ant & Dec continue to be fantastic hosts, and I really enjoyed the format, I'm glad there are more episodes to come next year (and a festive special!).

A daytime hit already, I'd only seen bits of Lingo due to it normally being halfway through when I get home from work. However, Sunday night viewing with Celebrity Lingo, randomly hosted by RuPaul, was right up my street. So much fun and I'm not sure Ru had a clue what was happening  Beat the Chasers was reliably great once again, and the revived series of The Weakest Link was enjoyable, with Romesh Ranganathan being a solid host, if incomparable to Anne Robinson of course.

Ooh I did watch a bit of The 1% Club! I thought it was a great idea for a quiz show and I really enjoyed trying to figure out all the answers. The Hit List remains a decent show as well!

oh I've never heard of The 1% Club but that seems quite interesting from the synopsis

Thanks both!! I'd fully recommend it Dan, it didn't disappoint and it was so much fun to play along with.

TV: Discoveries

1 Lost | Seasons 1-6

2 The Dumping Ground | Seasons 1-8

3 Utopia | Series 1-2

The discoveries category is for shows that have either concluded that I watched for the first time, or shows currently running that I've not seen the most recent series of yet. I discovered three shows this year, all very varied in theme and tone. Topping the list with ease is Lost, a recommendation to me from our very own HausofKubrick. What I didn't realise when I agreed to watch was that I was strapping myself in for one of the craziest TV rides I've ever seen, with a journey through so many interesting characters and unexpected plot twists, with much of the story told through flashbacks. It was a genius concept, and like any show, it did run thin nearer the end, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it (and didn't even find the ending that bad - it felt fitting for the characters who were arguably the centre of the show ahead of the mysteries in my opinion). I did a rank of all Lost's main characters that can be read here!

Over the summer I embarked on a Tracy Beaker rewatch, which led me through the original show and into Tracy Beaker Returns, neither show was new to me of course. However, this time, I decided to keep watching as Tracy Beaker Returns was rebranded into The Dumping Ground, fundamentally the same show but without Tracy Beaker. The show is still running, but I haven't yet caught up to the current tenth series, but I'm almost at the end of series 8 now and though all bar one of the Tracy Beaker Returns character have departed, it still feels gripping with interesting new characters added and an often mature approach to storytelling (of course, it's a kids show, so it can also be silly and eyeroll-worthy as an adult, but this is actually a rarity). Shoutout to Connor Byrne, who continued to play the role of head careworker Mike Milligan into series 7!

My final discovery of the year was the eerie 2013 Channel 4 thriller Utopia, a TV show about conspiracy theories that was dark, gruesome and dystopian. Believe it or not, one of my students recommended it to me...! It was an insightful watch, if uncomfortable a lot of the time; it really didn't shy away from very dark scenes and even dark humour. The plot was gripping, though. Not a single moment was dull (except the flashback episode, if Lost was the exception to the rule then Utopia sadly falls into the usual trap of flashback episodes being mostly dull to me), and the only real negative is that it was cancelled before the plot could be wrapped. Not light viewing at all and I'm not sure how likely I'd be to rewatch, but I'm glad I watched it this year!

Thanks both!! I'd fully recommend it Dan, it didn't disappoint and it was so much fun to play along with.

I've watched 3 shows of this now, it's indeed great! made me feel smart and dumb in near-equal measure

OMG i've missed a lot !!

Firstly: EE > Corry > ED x

Secondly, The 1% Club   hype for Christmas return x The Wheel beating Family Fortunes ;o you're cancelled forevermore x

Thirdly: L O S T < 3 honestly such an incredible feeling to know that you fell in love with the show on my recommendation. It probably ranks as my all-time #1 show? Technically the likes of Breaking Bad and The Sopranos outdo it, but the emotional leverage and character love that comes with LOST means it overtakes those in my personal affections I think. Such a brilliant show and so much love for you giving it a go <3

1 Heartstopper

2 Wreck

3 Heartbreak High

4 Surviving Summer

5 Tokyo Vice

6 The Beaker Girls

7 Tom Swift

8 Queer As Folk

This is a very polarising category from top to bottom, but we kick things off with what I'd say is my favourite show overall of 2022. Heartstopper intrigued me from the start. A coming of age show about two LGBTQ+ boys who fall in love with each other is right up my street, but I didn't expect it to be this good. Kit Connor and Joe Locke lead an incredible, diverse cast who excel with the wonderful material they're given, creating characters that feel real in situations that are relatable, if sometimes idealistic (no harm in that). Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring make for the cutest couple going, and both are so easy to root for. It's a show that touched me, so much so that I watched the entire thing (with our very own Jay) in one night, before rewatching the whole show just a couple of days later. I truly cannot WAIT for series 2!

Queerness is a theme throughout a few of these shows actually. BBC3's thriller drama Wreck was a gripping watch with an intriguing premise, albeit a little like Squid Game in parts. The dark humour was brilliantly done and the cast were great, I ended up really loving it after being confused after episode 1. Heartbreak High was a recent watch for me after a couple of recommendations, and it felt like one of the most authentic teen dramas I've seen in a while. The Australian drama documents the lives of an ensemble cast in school as they navigate relationships, sex and self-discovery, and the stories are gritty and emotionally-weighted. Very well done! Lower down the list are Nancy Drew spin-off Tom Swift, a show that made incredible strides in documenting black excellence and queerness on television but lacked on the plot front, and the 2022 remake of Queer As Folk, which went for a hard-hitting approach by calling back to the Pulse nightclub shooting, but unfortunately suffered from its characters not being likeable enough (notably Brody, the lead, who was self-centred and obnoxious). These two are the only shows on this list which were not renewed for a second series.

Elsewhere, Surviving Summer was another Australian show, this time about a girl called Summer, sent to live with family friends where she falls in love with surfing, and a guy called Ari. It's nothing groundbreaking but a lovely, easy watch. Tokyo Vice is another recent show, with Ansel Elgort playing Jake Adelstein in a dramatisation of a real journalist's memoir. It's a good show, albeit one that requires concentration as a large chunk of the show is in Japanese so I had to read the subtitles (yes, I'm one of those who usually goes for the dubbed versions). Ansel was nevertheless great and I really got into it! Finally, The Beaker Girls picked up where My Mum Tracy Beaker left off, and it was a cute continuation of the life of Tracy Beaker, though I dislike how it contradicts with the narrative of Tracy Beaker Returns (and therefore The Dumping Ground, which is still on air and saw a Tracy return just a few years back).

TV: Entertainment

1 In for a Penny | Series 4

2 Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway | Series 18

3 Dragons' Den | Series 19

4 Gogglebox | Series 19-20

A new category for entertainment shows that don't really fit into the competition or quiz show categories. Gogglebox would have won this last year had it been a separate category, but it's the delightfully ridiculous In for a Penny, puts in a strong showing in second place. I laugh so hard at every episode, mostly because of host Stephen Mulhern. It's the perfect show to watch where you can switch off your brain, sit back and rely on having a chuckle. The show it's spun-off from, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway is just behind. I always wish Saturday Night Takeaway was on for longer, but the fact it's only on for six or seven weeks of the year definitely makes me cherish it when it is on. It's packed full of light-hearted, silly fun and makes for a brilliant night of escapism.

Dragons' Den feels like a slight outlier here but it doesn't really feel suited to the competition category either so I decided entertainment would be a better suit! I really enjoyed 2022's series and the introduction of Steven Bartlett as the newest dragon, very excited for it to return in January. Gogglebox slips a bit this year, I still enjoy it a lot but I found it a little less essential this year for one reason or another.
